I like the game (been susbscribed for the last 12 months and enjoy it very much. I do not have any complaints except 1 which is what in the world was Funcom thinking when they devided to award subscription players a measly 60 credits a month for anything in the store. I mean, not only I am paying a sub but am I going to be nickle and dime into everything? By no means am I saying that I want everything in the store for free, but please give us a little more points for every month that we have showed our support. If I want to get anything from the store I need to wait 3 months or break out my wallet. I am seriously thinking about cancelling my account and enroll in the F2P bandwagon and if I need anything I can just get it from the store. I know they are in business to make money, but in my opinion F2P justs cost me more money than before.

Not a troll, just stating my opinion.

Subscribers should be able to get everything from the store for "free" IE at no additional cost, period. That's the whole idea of the hybrid model - subscribe or use the shop.

Nothing troll-like in your opinion. It's how it should work.

I would not go as far as saying that subscribers should have access to everything that the cash shop provides, but an increase on the points would be nice. I just hate the fact that I get the feeling that I am being double dipped for my money. Give me some sort of reward for staying with the game when no one else would. Don't insult my intelligence by giving me 60 measly points. Either give me more 120 or 180 (not saying 1000). As it stands I am almost sure I will cancel my sub, go F2P and access the cash shop when I need it.

I'm in the same boat. The Funcom subscriber points issue is a bad joke, and when I asked Morrison about it in a past interview he kind of brushed it off and mentioned that subscribers also get a 10% discount (which is negligible given the cash shop prices).

I'm not a fan of F2P, but in AoC's particular case, it does seem to be cheaper than supporting them with a sub every month.

Let me first tell you that I am a big fan of your articles and the site.

I do not care about the F2P model, it seems to be working for many. If it brings the numbers and keeps the game running I guess it is good. Does it apply to all games, I do not know.

We as customers can only show our discomfort with this particular issue by migrating to the F2P model or not buying anything from the cash shop. Now I read some where that there is a 2 gold limit cap with the F2P? If it is, then not even the F2P model works for me. Can anyone confirm this?

If you've been playing as a subscriber for a year then I assume you must have at least one if not multiple characters at max level by now, so what is it you actually 'need' from the item shop?
When the majority of the items are leveling armor pieces, social clothing, pets, potions (that you can get in game) and then access passes for non-subscribers, what is it you feel you 'need' to buy to play the game?

Sorry for the late response, but yes F2P accounts do have a 2 gold cap.

Great stuff BUT

i still want access to RotG. I bought the expansion when it came out. Seems like i should have access to it without having to sub. I'll claim the loot but will not be playing.

If they win a lot of cash this way get ready to see the same type of cash shop in TSW.

I normally would not have tried this game but I found a Godslayer dvd for ten bucks in Best Buy, so I gave it a try. Was still a 4 gig download to upgrade but am trying it out now. Not too bad so far, got a lot of bonus items with the box, like a mammoth, a bag and some weapons a ring and 30 days of Premium. I was expecting better graphics but may have to tweak it.

OK - and I'm surprised a reader had to find this instead of one the journalists. Here are some facts:

Time Warner 2010 Earnings Report: http://phx.corporate-ir.net/External.File?item=UGFyZW50SUQ9Nzk3ODZ8Q2hpbGRJRD0tMXxUeXBlPTM=&t=1

Time Warner had lost $20,000,000 in it's Filmed Entertainment division by the end of 2010. This is the sub-division in which their video game business resides. So someone lost money; here's what the financials say about the other 95% of the "Filmed Entertainment Division"

"In 2010, the Warner Bros. Pictures Group broke the all-time industry worldwide box office record with receipts of $4.814 billion, which surpassed the prior record of $4.010 billion (set by the Studio in 2009). Warner Bros. also established a new industry benchmark for the international box office with a total of $2.93 billion (marking a record third time of crossing the $2 billion threshold) and retained its lead domestically with a box office of $1.884 billion. 2010 also marked the 10th consecutive year Warner Bros. Pictures Group passed the billion dollar mark at both the domestic and international box office."

Now many of you keep parroting the "LOTRO tripled it's revenue since going free to play" line. If you Google for the quote, the ONLY results are from video game sites like this and you'll see it all attributed to the answer the head of Turbine gave on a podcast at Ten Ton Hammer.

Adam Mersky himself makes no mention of the milestone on twitter or any of his social network sites and he retweets every little detail of what Turbine is doing. There's also no collaborating post on any Official LotRO, Warner Bros. Time Warner Inc, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, or Warner Bros. Interactive website.

The only mention of Lord of the Rings Online in any stock holder's report, earnings report, SEC filing or anywhere official at all is:

"In 2010, WBIE continued to expand its games publishing business through acquisitions, including the acquisition of Turbine Inc., the developer of The Lord of the Rings Online"

Now isn't that odd that such a smart purchase that tripled in revenue isn't trumpeted to the investors? Isn't in Mersky's blog, in fact no where official at all?

What we have at Massively is some writer reading some other guys article, maybe 10 ton hammer or something, and just repeating it without doing any research whatsoever. It's not just Massively - it is all over the net - some guy attributes his facts to Massively who attribute their facts to MMORPG.com and they pass it around and around until it's everywhere, but what it comes down to is some guy answering a question on a gaming site's podcast that makes him look really smart.

There are a few sites that tried to investigate, who could only say 'a line item for the gaming division was 'suspiciously missing' from their earnings report. At least they found that the triple earning quote was inconclusive.

So here's a challenge - find anything officially owned by Time Warner or Turbine that has any mention of a tripling of the revenue pulled in by LotRO. Anything, as long as it's official. And Massively writers - I'm looking at you - are you a cut and paste shop or do you research what you're told? I think you should analyse this stuff before encouraging thousands of kids to go spend $5 on copies of buff icons for which the publishers can increase the rate at which you burn through your icons any time it wants.

If anyone finds anything, I'll go drop $50 in the Lotro (maybe Vindictus) Item shop and film the whole thing.

While I share your disdain for crappy journalism and will also never be mistaken for a fan of Turbine, I feel the need to point out that this article was about Funcom and Age of Conan.

You did all that research (i.e. Google Search) and ended up doing it on the wrong game and company?

Is this a meme? Are you trying to meme me, sir!?

oh crap. I didn't even look after I posted. Another Chrome tab crashed and I killed the browser, but when I brought it back up I guess this reply got autofilled because I had this article up as well. I just counted myself lucky that it wasn't gone and went along my merry way. Please feel free to delete it as it is long and really interrupts your comment section.

Sorry about that.

Lol. np. I just felt kinda bad that all that research and discussion didn't apply to what I wrote.

Also we don't delete comments unless they break our code of conduct, but by all means feel free to copy/paste it to the appropriate Turbine/LotRo post.

Thanks Jef - I was kinda surprised at how much space it took up when I first saw it so I copied and pasted it to a blog I have on another site. I even get annoyed at my walls of text sometimes so I'm not going to go torture the freepers again :)

(for tonight boooohahahaha)

BTW, regarding Conan did they ever take care of the hacks people were using in PvP?
I played it for about a year and got hooked up with an awesome guild - a lot of good writers and RPers on a PvP server. One of the biggest problems was the Bali (I think - been a while) farming for PvP gear. They let it go on long enough that all the bigger guilds had exploited themselves to the highest gear and when they fixed it they left that imbalance. The the hacking got prevalent and obvious with no response, so I left.
