World of Tanks' first birthday is right around the corner, and what better way to celebrate than via a milestone announcement. Wargaming.net's latest press releases touts the fact that the free-to-play World War II action MMO has surpassed 5,000,000 registered players.
That's a lot of tank commanders, and apparently more than the company anticipated. "We didn't expect World of Tanks would become this popular. The game's success has given us [the] confidence we needed to continue our expansion into the world of online wargames," said CEO Victor Kislyi.
World of Tanks also set numerous peak concurrent user records during its first year, and owns the Guiness World Record for simultaneous player connections at 91,311.

One of those games that is pretty fun and then every once in a while it gives you an incredible thrill during a really good battle.
Quite well done. I purposely stayed in the lower ranks to stay with the less hardcore players.

Why do so many people play this? I did one game and uninstalled it instantly.

Pure electro-crack. Even when I get frustrated with it, I'm back the next day and rearing to go. The occasional losing streaks I'll get on are more than outweighed by the really awesome battles when you win by a hair.
I'm with you on the lower tier thing, Pingles. I take a break from my higher tier heavies when I start getting burnt out and drop down to play in tiers 2 and 3. It completely refreshes the game for me, since the play style is so different at low tiers.
Looking forward to seeing what Wargaming can do with planes and (hopefully) ships.

I was hoping something "over-the-top" to mark such a birthday...
...you know, like a contest to win a real-live TANK! ;P

Yep it was uninstall for me too, its a strictly pay to win game that is pretty restrictive and 100% arcade. Its on par with Battlestar galactica.
The 5 million reg user thing is a such a crap tactic by this company. Your forced to register, thats all, using it as a keypoint in some advertisement makes these devs look like incedible fools.
Btw, its now under 5 million, after reading this i forced them to remove all my info, i hate devs that play this reg user game. Others should take the time to send them a message too.

@Graill440 World of Tanks is definitely not a pay to win game. Check your facts.

One year?... Huh?
One year old in Russia?
NA beta started over a year ago and the NA game launch was in April, so what's this one year thing?

The game is a great deal of fun, although I die too quickly. Must be a bug...

Good to hear WoT is going strong!
This is a pure PvP, hunt-and-blow-up-your-enemies online game that is just plain fun. Game companies should note what they've done right.
An additional benefit is that now I can instantly recognize tanks in those History Channel and Military Channel WWII shows :)
