@Space Cobra

The basic concept of the Sylvari is actually not very new. Google "Aldryami" and you'll see what I mean.
But what I will give Arenanet credit for is the visuals. Glorantha has been around for decades, and still nobody has figured out how to draw Aldryami properly. Kristen Perry cracked that nut.

i think you are narrowing it down to the aesthetics. What she meant is that there isnt a race out there with a backstory like that.

The distinction I'd make, and what seems to be the distinction Kristen Perry made, is that every image I find on a quick GIS for dryad, zhann, aldryami... they're predominantly humans with pointed ears, body paint, and some plant accessories.

The redesigned sylvari are the first incidence I've really taken note of where the anatomy concept was embraced and the aesthetic was achieved by sculpting plants together into a humanoid form, rather than starting with a humanoid form and tacking some flowers on the hair and painting some spots on the skin.

Most especially, in the context of MMORPGs, I'm not sure I've really seen a "plant person" like any of the above, much less the sculptural plant bodies of the sylvari.

That made me wince too, the concept of the Sylvari isn't new in the fantasy genre, but is new within the MMO genre.

I actually found it a little arrogant what she said, but I must admit I really like what they've done with the race.

I don't play fantasy games or read fantasy literature or any of that stuff beyond some video games, but even I was a bit skeptical that "we've never seen anything like this before," and I literally have no idea about what plant/humanoid races there have been in fantasy. But, then I realized: we don't actually know much about the Sylvari yet. I think aesthetically they could be pretty original, since as others have said, they have more of a sense of a plant in the shape of a humanoid than a humanoid with some planty stuff. But beyond that, we don't know much about how they'll act. All we really have is yesterday's lore post and today's video, they COULD very well be very original and unique. I do think they were overreaching, but who knows, they could be right and I'm definitely very willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

@correllis (And others)

I have heard of the origin story before; people being born of one plant. We'll see where the new wrinkles are with the more layers.

As for you other folks, like Shakespeare said, there is nothing new under the sun:

(Giuseppe Arcimboldo : 1527-1593) Here is ONE of his studies/portraits:
http://www.lifeasmyth.com/journal_planet_Arcimboldo.html

Other artists around the same time, like Hieronymous Bosch, also played around with similar portraits.

Again, not knocking Sylvari and I am glad to see them in an MMO, because in that regard, they can be considered "first", but I have seen the concepts, origin, look/features, before in other areas of life.

Hell, in fact, I might name my Sylvari after Arcimboldo. ;)

Make a GW1 character with that name and it will be reserved for you in GW2 ;)

@Space Cobra Actually.. King Solomon said, There is nothing new under the sun" first. ;) Look up Ecclesiastes lol, despite what your worldview may be you might find it an interesting read. It is quite a great bit of philosophy.

@Space Cobra She's saying "It's a Sylvari." Yes, we've seen plant like humanoid creatures before from artists. Search for plant like humanoids on Deviant Art. You'll see some. What she is saying is that they are unique in the Sylvari as a whole Not just "Plant people". That's pretty obvious people have made up plant people before. Hell, a toddler probably came up with the idea of plant like humanoids before anyone else.

I'm defiantly going to roll a Sylvari male now.

have a feeling that they might be a rare site on the battle field, and it'll be fun to kick butt and run around as a lithe, non roided up fella......for once.

^_^

I already knew I would be spending forever tinking with customization options in character creation. Now I can't wait to see what kinds of forms and looks I'll be able to generate with the sylvari character creator.

I really don't like how they are saying it is unique. As an avid fan of Farscape , they really remind me of Zhann. You know the blue plant lady that has empathetic link powers to share pain,and I believe they are Asexual to.

Still Zhann was my FAVORITE from Farscape so i'm not really complaining!

@Soviet Shaman Yeh i am pretty sure there are bound to be similar races about. They are tooting their own horn a little bit there.

I was already planning to play a Sylvari, this only made sure that I ONLY play Sylvari in GW2. I really love the redesign, and I applaud Anet for wanting more than just an Elf, it shows how much they put their heart and soul into the game that they won't just settle to make a beautiful Sylvari they wanted to make a breathtaking one.

Loving the new direction for the race, just like a lot of people here, but the insistent way we're told it's something we've never seen before or omgbrandnew is a bit offputting.

Meh, still great looking race and a game I definitely plan to check out.

I think the qustion is being asked: "What MMO can you roll a plant as a player character?" Thus ArenaNet may have some validity to their bragging rights. :)

I think the only reason she brought that up was because there's been a little bit of a push from some segments of the fanbase to try to pigeonhole them, like she was saying. Some people wanted elves, some people wanted dryads, some people wanted ents, and it's proving very hard to get those people to give up their preconceived notions of what the race "should" be. Pretty much everything they've announced that doesn't gel with traditional "plant race" tropes has been challenged, and so I can understand a little insistence that people should check their assumptions.
