It's been a while since we checked up on Age of Conan game director Craig Morrison's personal blog, and the latest update is a lengthy morsel designed to get gamers thinking about MMO story as something more than a marketing bullet point. Along the way, we get a glimpse of Morrison's thoughts on games ranging from MMOs, to Brink, to id Software's forthcoming RAGE.
While you might think that story is all about narrative and characterization, Morrison opines that a sense of place and attention to world-building details like societal structures are equally important. Quest text can be crucial too, and while gameplay is obviously a big deal, Morrison says that it's only part of the equation.
"Sure, a game can be good on its own mechanical merits, and first and foremost a game must be a compelling gameplay experience... but those truly great games? Those are the games that also create a sense of place for the player. A world they can believe in," he writes.

I think Funcom are some of the best people to talk about immersion.
For all its faults, AoC's sound and visuals are simply incredible. There is not a single other MMO where I've actually *felt* like I'm in a psuedo-Celtic mountain range. If nothing else, I log into AoC every now and then just to go to Old Tarantia or any of Cimmeria's zones and soak up the atmosphere.
It's breathtaking.

I think that's something that's very true of Rift. It was mechanically very sound (perhaps one of the best, mechanically and polish-wise, MMO launches ever) but it there just wasn't anything to make you go "that's pretty epic," especially when it came to the soundtrack.

I agree about AoC. There's some really epic zones in that game. Ymir's Pass, Thunder River, Old Tarantia, etc. The music is awesome as well.
Rift I agree only about the soundtrack. It's not bad, but it's not very memorable. There are some really epic areas in that game. The world just lacks a large sense of scale right now. Hopefully that's something they improve on with expansions.

@Dril Agree as well on AoC. I recently came back to the game and remembered why i used to love it so much. When i'm in a mountain zone, i can almost feel the cold air, and when i run over a stream the splashing sounds so real.
I love playing my ranger. The whistle of an arrow leaving my bow actually sounds like it has power to it, like it's deadly.
More people need to play this game.

Breathtaking indeed. Some of my random AOC screenshots.

AoC has improved immensely the community has gotten much better (mainly because Funcom finally threw out the handful of problem Trolls) The game is much less Buggy and there is a lot to do...it all gives me a lot of hope for The Secret World.

Tell Morrison that while AOC is amazing, there are THOUSANDS upon thousands of potential players waiting for Funcom to release a game launcher/installer that doesnt take TWENTY HOURS OR MORE on cable/fiber optic connections!!!!
Seriously, they spent months to make the already amazing graphics better(and in actuality, theres no real diffference for 90% of the players) yet cant decide to have a trial or patcher that patches SOME of the game or patches while you play???
That and the fact that funcom has NO CUSTOMER SUPPORT OR GMS WHATSOEVER is very frustrating. I love AOC, but when spoiled players that play 20hrs a day, ARE THE GAMES GMS, something is wrong.
