For most people, having the game you're working on break every pre-order record your parent company has ever seen would be enough to give you a breather and a sigh of relief. Not so with Star Wars: The Old Republic's Daniel Erickson, who admits to being on pins and needles nevertheless. Talking with Videogamer.com, Erickson says, "At least for myself, nothing short of shipping and actually being successful will alleviate that worry. I've watched this game grow since before day one and as with any creative project you pour your heart into, the mix of anticipation and fear is huge. We'll relax after the game is out, running beautifully and our fans are having a blast."
In the interview, Erickson used the opportunity to clear the air over a misquote concerning SWTOR "lasting decades," explain why he doesn't fully trust outside industry analysts, and talk about why the dev team stayed with the tried-and-true hotbar for combat.
Erickson also thinks that the subscription model isn't going anywhere, but will be applied mostly to "top tier" MMOs. "I expect to see a small group of games compete for the subscription dollar," he predicts, "and a larger group take on the F2P market with smaller, faster produced games that try to establish a core market then use the revenue streams created from that small market to improve and expand their game."

It's actually quite comforting to know that they're worried about it. That at least means they'll try and make it go well and be a good game.
I'd be far more worried if they suddenly started saying "we're so chilled, launch'll be a cakewalk because we're so awesome."

@Dril As a great person once said, "Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering."
EA is embracing it. I still welcome it.

To be honest I couldn't care less about it breaking pre-order sales records - I'm still not buying it until they release the subscription price.

I guarantee it won't have a cheaper flat rate monthly fee than WoW or Rift or AoC or any other AAA MMO. Cheaper implies less quality and that's stupidly cutting into profits. I would expect $14.99/mo with cheaper bulk discounts. Possibly add a founder's pricing in there.

@SiML atleast 90% of pay to play mmos in North America are $15 a month, they wont deviate from that imo.

Well, I can guarantee that I'm not getting the game if it's subscription is any higher than $15 per month, no matter how good it is. Also, if the game features micro-transactions (which I'm quite certain it will do), and I deem anything in the game shop as essential, I'm also not getting it.
After the IP-lock on the exclusive dealer for the digital version (Origin), any small trust I had in EA vanished.

Yeah, I too am expecting $17.99 ~ $19.99, and its a damned awesome looking Star Wars game, so at either of those prices I'll still pay.
Look at Blizzard and the prices on their box sales, only recently and almost 7 yrs later their battlechest for WoW has dropped to $19.99, WotLK is still $39.99.
If an MMO has a strong IP and a slew of fans, asking a premium price is nothing. I'll pay it!

@Khalus I very much doubt they will consider a higher subscription price. These kinds of things are standardized. Placing it lower or higher than what most users consider the norm could potentially cripple the game financially. Remember, this is not a one-time payment such as the selling of a game disk. This is a recurring transaction and the thought of having to pay more every month would only fit for all but the most hardcore fans.

@DarkWalker - There is no IP lock on SWTOR, and there is no single point of purchase, except online. I am dissappointed by EA's rebuffing of Steam, and I hope it bites them in the ass, but the reality of it is that you can get this game at as many points of purchase as WoW. WoW is only electronically sold via Blizzard, so come off the Origin crap already.
Go to BeastBuy, Wallymart, or Targ'et...you can get your SWTOR on there if you don't like Origin.

The developers that actually care about the game beyond how it does financially are definitely worried, as any good dev would be. They want their game to do well. The bigwigs up in EA won't hesitate to cut funding after the box sales cover pretty much all of the development costs and for whatever reasons (oh I dunno, it's not that unique) is not living up to the omg, 11 million subs level. Just my opinion. The first few months are always crucial!

And they are cutting most of the world from purchasing at launch.
Hard to understand, sometimes.
For my part, I changed my mind on when I will get this game. Before, I was going to pre-order the US version. Now, I'll most likely only get it some 6 months after it officially launches on my country; before that I will be playing GW2 (and trying to get friends and family to try it, instead of TOR).
