Pop culture references seem to be the providence of Hipsters and not actual gamers. Personally I would kill for a serious Fantasy MMO that was low magic and didn't have a ton of pop culture references. I guess that is why I am enjoying AOC and LOTRO currently.

@epilepticemu Oh no usually the ones that are into pop culture references are exactly like the Hipsters in that link...they just play games because it's part of the in thing currently.

WoW is full of them.

@Dunraven

There is no pop, there is only culture.
There is no reference, there is only "OMFG DID SOMEONE SAY FIREFLY!?!?!?"
There is no hip, there is only a fad.
There is no "hipster," there is only the hater.

Honestly, I'm surprised with how many references Guild Wars has that World of Warcraft would never bother with, because of how odd they might be. You got Acolyte Sousuke, who has a "Naruto" vibe with his various connections with Sasuke, including hairstyle and hairband. There's plenty of others of course, and Sousuke is a bit of an argument with his reference.

Nothing beats General Morgan though...

There are so many I am sure I miss and I am sure I saw some star wars references in there but cant remember the dialog. But I do like how VEKK will say , are you pondering what I am pondering. A great reference to The Brain from Pink and the Brain, because the guy who does Vekks voice is the voice of Brain and at the moment at a loss for his name.

@Genkides I think he did a voice or 2 for EQ2 also, seem to recall. I do know that the guy who voiced Invader Zim is in EQ2, always got a kick out of hearing him!

@Saker

Guild Wars also did a reference to Invader Zim. Very hilarious stuff. And I even got a kick out of the Indiana Jones reference because it is actually sewn into the gameplay; running away from boulders.

I'm sick to death of pop culture references in my games. I'm playing the game to have fun and to escape the real world a little bit...constantly running into pop culture quips ruins both goals.

"The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou."? I have never heard of this movie. Is it really considered pop culture?

If so, I REALLY need to get out more.

Can you fit in a screenshot of the entire World of Warcraft? They used to put in the odd reference here and there, but after the last expansion the whole game seemed to have turned into a blatant pop-culture pun-fest. They'll have to name the next expansion "Dude where's my quest?"
