While I like many of the references to pop culture I see in MMOs (Star Trek, Firefly, Oprah Winfrey), it is the slightly more obscure ones that stand out for me. Like one that can be found on the Jade Sea in Guild Wars: Factions. Zenos, a Luxon famous for his writings about his squad's adventures, had tragedy hit his last expedition. We're celebrating pop culture in our MMOs this week. Developers sneak references in all over games, whether it be via NPCs, quests, or items, and we want to see your favorites. Grab a screenshot, tell us a bit about what it is, and send it to oneshots@massively.com. We'll be featuring the best of these all week.
As it is told by one of his crew: "On our last journey into the far reaches of the Big Green, Zenos' longtime partner and best friend, Bestenon, was unexpectedly eaten... completely devoured... by a mysterious monster of the unknown. And so we prepare for one more expedition, not for knowledge, or even for gold. No, Zenos seeks revenge against the monster, and we, his loyal crew, will join him"
It is, of course, the plot of the movie The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. As you continue the quest and gather up a squad for a new expedition to find the mysterious monster on the Jade Sea, each person you meet is another reference to a character in the movie. Here you see a screenshot of Zenos himself, planning his last, greatest adventure.
Pop culture week kicks off here on One Shots with a submission from Massively reader Tanek.

Pop culture references seem to be the providence of Hipsters and not actual gamers. Personally I would kill for a serious Fantasy MMO that was low magic and didn't have a ton of pop culture references. I guess that is why I am enjoying AOC and LOTRO currently.

Honestly, I'm surprised with how many references Guild Wars has that World of Warcraft would never bother with, because of how odd they might be. You got Acolyte Sousuke, who has a "Naruto" vibe with his various connections with Sasuke, including hairstyle and hairband. There's plenty of others of course, and Sousuke is a bit of an argument with his reference.
Nothing beats General Morgan though...

There are so many I am sure I miss and I am sure I saw some star wars references in there but cant remember the dialog. But I do like how VEKK will say , are you pondering what I am pondering. A great reference to The Brain from Pink and the Brain, because the guy who does Vekks voice is the voice of Brain and at the moment at a loss for his name.

@Genkides I think he did a voice or 2 for EQ2 also, seem to recall. I do know that the guy who voiced Invader Zim is in EQ2, always got a kick out of hearing him!

I'm sick to death of pop culture references in my games. I'm playing the game to have fun and to escape the real world a little bit...constantly running into pop culture quips ruins both goals.

"The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou."? I have never heard of this movie. Is it really considered pop culture?
If so, I REALLY need to get out more.

Can you fit in a screenshot of the entire World of Warcraft? They used to put in the odd reference here and there, but after the last expansion the whole game seemed to have turned into a blatant pop-culture pun-fest. They'll have to name the next expansion "Dude where's my quest?"
