I totally plant on playing one (in the hope that they're limiting the number of plant puns to approximately zero in-game). I really like what they've done with the design.

Now these exotic beings are truly tree-huggers, and I shall gleefully take on the role of Sylvari, when the game launches. Simply awesome! Thanks, ArenaNet.

So, I guess it's up to me to play spoilsport again.

I HATE THIS. Shoot... I mean, I love EATING salad... but BEING salad? I mean, yes the first design was kinda bland, but this is way over the top. The character design isn't sooo bad, but this hidious clothing! Why are people MADE of plant wearing clothing of plant? That makes no sense! That's as if I as human would wear human skin as hide armour! *shudder* Plant clothing looks just so... primitive. Like some neanderthal from the forest or what.

Initially I was planning to play Sylvari, and the char doesn't look half bad, but NO WAY I am going to wear a SALAD SKIRT!

@Elikal You don't have to wear the plant clothing, those are just some examples of race-specific armor (and probably town clothes, too). So if you just like the character design, you're in luck. ;) As for why they would wear it, everything in the Grove appears to be made from plants and just used as it's grown. The clothes are probably still alive.

Looks adorable to me, I wonder if they'll have some sunlight related racial power? ;)

I'm impressed. I could see myself making one of these characters. Gotta hand it to these guys for upping the ante on character variation.

@hereafter

Furthermore, this is the right way to approach fantasy characters. There's no reason to be timid with the design in a world like this, unless you're specifically trying to evoke a "realistic," Tolkein kind of aesthetic. Rift pulled its punches in that respect and it was part of my dissatisfaction. Oddly, I don't mind the similarities of characters in TOR, but they also have more body options and works with the IP, I think.

Another way to look at the Sylvari being humanoid and 'dressing up' as such would be to look to Melandru's models from GW. (Melandru is/was the godess of nature) Of course all of the previous incarnations of Melandru have been from a human perspective. But she has always been portrayed as a human female intertwined with a great living tree, usually with a fountain of water flowing from a vessel in her hands.
Also, her avatar and the avatar for the dervishes (they both use the same skin, I believe) are very tree/plant-like.
Fun to speculate about. But, whether they're actually related to Melandru in the slightest, I have no clue, other than the obvious 'nature' link.

Im liking the new info on the Sylvari. I was very doubtful I'd be rolling one til this update, Thanks Rubi, and Thanks to A Net for the inside look. Liking the lil plant people now tho...
Hardly cant wait for the release of GW2.

I like the concept..... except the part when you make a Sylvari Engineer....

And since I have been doing this to every A-Net update here on Massively.... WHERE IS MY MESMER?! :P

@Tyrang
My sylvari is tentatively going to be an Engineer. In the GW2 concept art, there are a lot of scenes with huge mechanical structures and broken down technology that have rusted, fallen apart, and been reclaimed by nature over time. My character's specialty is finding those and reading into what happened to them to figure out what they were used for, and possibly trying to make them functional again (of course, when he's in charge of the project, the end result still has a lot of moss and bird's nests intact, and he sees nothing wrong with that).

I firmly believe that any race/class combination can work within the lore, if you find a way to approach the class -as- that race.

After reading the stories of Killeen in the original Guild Wars novel, Ghosts of Ascalon and then Caithe in the follow-up book, Edge of Destiny, I’ve been planning on creating a female Sylvari Necromancer.

The only problem was, that the original Sylvari look didn’t quite fit with the appearance that I’d imagined for my necro.

After seeing the latest iteration I’m as happy as a dog with two bones, as Kristen’s newest visual creation fits perfectly with my imagined merging of the two characters from the books.

They are nice designed and all, but I think I will rather stick with Humans. But that's just my taste ;) I'm also interested to see Sylvari's armours! :D

One of the things I liked about the original was that the males looked just as attractive as the females. However this seems to have been tossed out of the window for the new design and while I do like the female options shown I don't like the males. As the Sylvari were one of the main reasons I wanted to play Guild Wars 2, I will hold off until I see an option that I find a male options as appealing including clothing as there is not a single male design I liked but the females look well designed.

Right now if feels like the standard lovely females ugly male design in most of other MMOs. :-( I'll be keeping my eyes open this week as more information and images are released.

@Unshra wow arent you overreacting just a tad bit. And if you reason for not playing gw2 is cuz of the characters not looking like final fantasy males then u were never going to enjoy it in the first place. (done being a jerk)

Gw 2 character creation was made using the Aion's template, but unlike the Aion's version you will be limited to making proper characters not the freaks you see sometimes in aion. And it just so happens that gw 2 character creation will make its debut during GamesCom.
