What's a dictator to do when his third-world economy is wheezing along on its last legs? Hack some video games, of course! According to a report in the New York Times, North Korea's Kim Jong-il unleashed an army of young computer crackers on popular South Korean online gaming portals to find ways to make quick cash.
South Korean authorities claim that a squad of approximately 30 hackers operated from a base in China and were given the mission of breaching online gaming servers (including those of the immensely popular Lineage) to set up bot factories and automated farming collectives. The digital booty was then sold to gamers for a reported $6 million over two years.
Chung Kil-hwan, a senior officer at South Korea's International Crime Investigation Unit, says that the hacker group "reports to a shadowy Communist Party agency called Office 39, which gathers foreign hard currency for Mr. Kim through drug trafficking, counterfeiting, arms sales, and other illicit activities."

Suddenlly ganking gold farmers takes on a whole new level of risk, is he or isn't he a North Korean Agent? Do you feel lucky punk?

Much of the gold farming business in China is run by criminal organisations because it is a relatively safe and easy way to make money.
So for a government to decide to do it too? Not really surprising. I'd be more worried about the criminals coming after you though :)

Does this mean that Homeland Security is going to start stalking botters in games? Maybe MMO companies will start banning these botters faster now that they may have "Terrorist" tags floating over their head. As for the gold buyers, well... who knows. They might actually reopen Guantanamo Bay for you nice young gentlemen. Since, y'know, you're funding that nuke waving crackpot.

I wonder who will still say gold buying is a victimless crime?

I don't think I know what you are talking about. I don't hold the power to remove comments.
I feel that buying gold is not a victimless crime. If it supports North Korea then we all should stop. North Korea is truly evil. There are documentaries about how bad it is over there. If you speak out against the leadership you are killed. Then your parents, kids, brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, and cousins all get locked away in family detention camps; where they will never be fed and have to fight to eat. Look it up.

Quote from a blog on G4TV about this I found funny:
"So thirty of the top-elite North Korean computer school graduates made six million dollars over the last two years... meanwhile, in Western capitalism, Notch, the creator of Minecraft, made over $45 million (estimate) on a game with graphics that could run on a North Korean computers. Meanwhile, famous actors make 5 times the NK gang's haul for starring in dumb movies that everyone will forget in six months. Score one for Capitalism and the free market!"

sounds like an overwhelmingly successful operation , hard to believe that NCSoft would just let this happen on their watch.
Hmmm what steps has NCSoft taken to combat RMT in any of their games .
How many hops on my "Jump to Conclusions Mat" is it going to take to draw a line from NCSoft to North Korea?
South Korean NIS needs to take a hard look at NCSoft

If it were any more loopy, it'd be a CIA operation.

$30 million in two years
$15 million in one year
$500,000 for each of the 30 team members
Grey market hackers make double what doctors make? You betcha. I wonder if they could have done it without the backing of the North Korean government. I can't really imagine what they'd provide that those people couldn't get for themselves for this operation.
Bottom line: No wonder this is such a big business.
