DC Universe Online has been quiet on the announced megaservers for quite some time, but it turns out that the update is just around the corner. Specifically, the new server structure will be going into effect on Monday, and players have been given a brand-new developer diary on the benefits and the procedure to help get everyone up to speed. In short, it's more people on servers and more people to group up with, albeit still segregated between PC and PS3 players.
Character names will have to be changed in some cases, but the system being used ensures that characters whose names are changed will also receive a free subsequent change if they want. According to comments, the determination will essentially be comparing hours played -- so if you have two characters with the same name on active accounts, but one's been active since launch, the older character will get to keep the name. While it's not quite the cross-platform servers many players had hoped for, it should help bolster the population of each game server as a whole.

Good to see these games getting closer to the tech to allow more players to group together. Will be good for MMO's when the day comes your not limited to your server or group of servers.

I'm sure the 50 remaing players are thrilled!

@Cam L Tow The 50,000 trolls that come out of the woodwork whenever DCUO is mentioned must be excited for the chance to make their "do people still play this?" joke. With such biting wit, I'm surprised they don't write for Jay Leno, Carrot Top, Dane Cook, or Carlos Mencia.

I don't know if the Megaserver will help much.
SOE is going to have to entice players that left to
come back and resubscribe. I think that the only ones
that still play are the lifetime subscribers.

Pretty much. I cancelled last month due to the paid dlc announcement and not being able to get group content done. I keep tabs on the forums for any interesting announcements (f2p or reversal on paid dlc) and all I ever see are the same dozen or so lifetime subscribers. I have a hard time believing even they'll be around after the next batch of anticipated games comes out.

@BubleFett Shorter queues is the enticement. So much of the pve game has been basically unavailable for the last 2 updates due to the low population.
The pvp game has been unavailable almost since the start because people stopped queuing due to the rampant exploits. For a lot of gamers, pvp is the game so for them DCUO was a nonstarter which is a shame. The combat system should lend itself to really exciting and dynamic pvp which would be the player expandable content that makes up for the pve content that takes up relatively little time. You get more people online for longer periods of time, making it more likely that there will be enough people on at any given time to form a raid or alert group.
Introducing Megaservers is the stabilization action need in order to allow the things that grow the game take root. The only way it matters in long run is if they put out raid and other pve content out as fast as players can complete their tier sets and if they ensure that there is an active effort to keep pvp fair (if they banned a single person for cheating, they were really quiet about it).

@BubleFett I re subbed on the announcement. Played last night and came to the sad realization that low population was a symptom of larger problems with the game.

Consolidating the few players they have left and calling them mega-servers is not progress. The way Champions-Online and CoH are improving exponentially with their F2P hybrid model, It is only a matter of time before this folds.

In all honesty, I was the biggest defender and advocate of DCUO when if first went live, especially on the forums. I bought it the day it came out, and even stood by while the "Pistol Glitch" ran wild all over the servers, but at this time, I have to agree with you. 100%.
Its simply too little, too late.
The potential this game had was amazing, and it actually makes me angry SoE let it slip through their fingers like Sand.
Unbelieveable.

Given their track record with SWG... I am not terribly surprised.
I will say though, based off of how many companies have had a REALLY hard time getting excellent, well-established IP's to flourish in the MMO world ... it must be a tough job to find success creating online games.

guarantee...this will go down badly. The phasing tech they plan to use just doesn't scale very well at all, before you start to see the reason that games such as WoW use it sparingly, and even more so since their last release. Them trying to mash up whatever remaining players into 2 large, phased servers is a train wreck in waiting. And, besides that, it truly is a band-aid on a symptom, and not a fix for the problem... people were leaving the game for a myriad of reasons... this isn't going to stop people from continuing to bail on this sinking ship.

Isn't 'Megaserver' just a fancy way of saying 'server merge'?
