I'd really like to know why they renamed this to Castle Empire from The Settlers Online.

I might have to give it a go, but I'm a huge fan of The Settlers and am afraid it will just totally disappoint me.

Holy shit, EE is back online for real? I didn't play it much and would be lying to say that I was a real fan, but it's great to see a game come back from the dead. I might have to log on and mess around a bit some time this week to celebrate.

Scratch that actually. After I typed that I realized you have to have a facebook account to play now. That ain't happening.

@Kaoy

FWIW I made a fake Facebook account to play, worried it would spam my relatives/friends with Quest stuff and such but the fake account has had no input from the game.

When it goes live (it's in Beta) I will likely switch to my real account.

@Kaoy I guess I don't get it...where does this idea that Facebook automatically spams your page, and your friend's pages...come from? I mean, any time you have a friend on there or someone who is spamming you to death, they are allowing that to happen.

It's all very easy to control and easy to block someone, or even just delete those type of posts. I believe you can even go so far as to block any type of game achievement, etc.

Either way, I'm sure they'll come out with some alternate sign ins, if they haven't already. I didn't check because I love signing in with FB, it's great.

Thanks for the comments, guys!

@Kaoy You can organize your privacy settings not to share updates on FB with some groups of people, and that way nobody will be spammed with game stuff.

Castle Empire has both FB and normal login options, btw.

@Carolina Let's be clear, as well...the only way a game is going to post to your wall is if you allow it to. That means that whenever you sign up for an app it will say basically "does this have permission to post to your wall?"

Now, giving it permission does not mean it will automatically. I haven't come across a game that does that yet (and I've played a LOT) what that means is that *if* you get an achievement or something it will ask you to post it to your wall...you still have to give it permission again. Essentially, though, the initial agreement was to give it the access.

Anyway, back to Earth eternal..it does not have anything that posts to your wall anyway. Since it has an embedded version on FB, it decided to go the way of the FB login. After all, there are hundreds of millions on the site, can you blame them? hehe

@Beau Hindman

I will likely save my Facebook diatribe for when you do the Earth Eternal Rise and Shiny and not clutter up this fine game with this nonsense. But there is some history behind my trepidation.

@Beau Hindman Its not spam that I am worried about. It's joining facebook that is the issue. I just do not like those sorts of sites. I find them tiresome and annoying and I fail to see the point of authenticating someones existence via another website(which is they reason they state for requiring it) when some one can just set up a fake account there to hold multiple accounts anyway. It seems like an unnecessary step and a step in a direction I don't feel like taking, at that.

Hey everyone,

This is Katealyst, the player experience manager for Castle Empire. I wanted to clear something up. You do NOT need to create a Facebook account to play. You do NOT need to connect your Facebook to the game in any way. It is an option because many people prefer to use Facebook Connect.

The game is in Closed Beta, if you would like a key head to http://www.castleempireonline.com/en and register. You should receive a key within 15 minutes (unless we hit the maximum).

Again, if you don't want to use Facebook simply fill out the registration form by hand and don't hit the Facebook Connect button!

Hope to see you in game!

@Katealyst

I registered for the game a few days ago and never got a key, going to assume that you guys have a lot of people signed up for Closed Beta.

Might as well just wait for Open Beta.

I am having a lot of fun with Castle Empire :)

It's like a slower multiplayer version of "Zeus" and "Pharaoh", city building games that I used to play a lot. So far the focus is more in having a strong economy so that you can maintain and army, and just then be able to expand territory. Or using the sprinkler example, you do a LOT of work to maintain that grass nice and green, and even though you work a lot to make the system work good, it will be a slow process.

I hope the "pvp" options in the game don't ruin it to me. I really like just managing the economy and watching my little peasants work.

While I did manage to have an orderly and almost cute village at start, I also didn't read forum tutorials before playing, just the game one so things got chaotic over time. I guess it would help if they'd keep a log of the tutorial screens, so that you could go back to it and review why you were asked to build certain structures in the order asked, etc. Though since the forum is so full of helpful guides, they might not do that at all.

And that's my lil MMOvoices profile linked up there! Good place to talk about games :)

Great article. made me clean the dust off Dawn of discovery as i was stopped at a timed map, i HATE anything being timed, and DOD had been gathering dust for over a year plus, this article had just enough sarcastic humor to push past the one level. Well done.

Sorry for any confusion I caused you, but my complaints were in regards to EE, the next game Beau is planning to RnS about, and not about your game.

@Kaoy Hmm, that was meant to be a reply to Katealyst, so not sure why it showed up here.

@Kaoy Hmm I had the same issue earlier. It seems cleared up now. Anyway, feel free to write up any complaints about Facebook connections. They definitely need to hear that stuff, so they can improve on it or offer other options. :)

If you've been away from the game for more than 24 hours, your game 'freezes'. That means that the production stops etc. That's good because when you come back after a week, not all wheat fields are empty.

Still, what annoys me the most is that even if I play every day - several times a day - I keep having to rebuild the wheat fields, mines, etc. And of course, I keep having to send off my two specialists to look for places where I can build my mines. In some cases, the 'looking for a mine' takes a few hours.

Also, I can only put three different things into the build queue. Which usually means spending an hour just to get my map back to work with different mines, enough wheath fields, water and so on. That's the main reason I don't play anymore. It's just too much time involvement. Or cutting back and only having a few resources but then the games takes even longer to produce all the weapons and armor I need so I can train enough soldiers to get my map free of the bandits.

In general, I really enjoyed my time in there and I keep going back every now and then. But I really don't like the short build queue and the fast emptying of mines etc. (I'm playing the German version, by the way, which is in open beta already).

And yes, every player's map looks exactly the same in its basic layout (bandit camps, lakes, etc.).
