What a lot of players don't realize is the masks the Skulls are wearing are actual skull bones robbed from graves.

And the mortality of these gangs isn't as definite as you might think. Even the lowliest members have enough power to take machine gun bursts to the chest, axe blades to the neck and super strength punches to the head, and still only get knocked out and arrested, only to get back out on the streets mere hours or days later! They can die if the story calls for it, but they are incredibly tough by non-superhero standards, all of which is why the regular police need the backup of the Heroes to deal with them.

For such groups to exist in the real world, gangs like MS13 would be wiped out/join up pretty quickly.

Deep down I have always hoped for an "Issue" that would focus on a new gang formed by the merger of the Hellions, Skulls and Trolls. Just picture what kind of chaos that kind of gang would cause in say Skyway City.

Nice article Eliot. ^_^

One of my favorite things in the game always was the reveal of the musical tastes of Hellions. In a low level Magic origin mission out of Atlas Park, you are sent to root out a gang of Hellions on a unique map, basically one of the ruined office building maps, only with fire and other decorations.

In the mission, you learn something about the Hellions. The names of bands they like, and events and venues they apparently favor:

Band names

Abyzzmal
Arachnidia
Domynion Boyz
DragonVomitters
Firemullet
The Hellmonia
Kyller Kyng
Nefylum
Souldevourer

Event names

Arcanamusica Festival of Rock
Bloodrivals Brimstone Tour
Fire for the Soul Tour

Venues

Diroma Hall
Fieryforge Niteclub

For a while, on Virtue server I was in a SG called Firemullet Groupies.

There's a mission late in the game where some Skulls have been set up as patsies by the high-level foes that are your main opposition. It's rather amusing to come across their unsuspecting spawn, at barely double-digit levels, delivering their lines about a "big score" and just waiting to be obliterated by a few blasts from the experienced, powerful hero(es).

Ah, my first 50 was a Fire/Fire Blaster who was a former Hellion. Good times.

Heck, even with my 50s today, I still occasionally swing through Atlas or Galaxy and stop the Hellions from stealing purses.

"Also, I'd like to note that I managed to avoid the obvious meme through the entirety of this article. Now go and hunt."

Wrong.

It would have been better to end that with "Now go. Hunt."
That would have been much closer.
And Skulls only should have one L. ;>

The Hellions got a huge upgrade with The Girl Friend From Hell bosses. That was just brilliant on the Dev's part and really speaks to the true lack of understanding that the Hellions have for what they are getting involved with. I would have loved to have seen them reappear later in the game when they were all possesed by demons, talk about a natural evolution for a group. They start off playing with fire and then litterally get burned by it.
