Is this open-world or is all combat instanced?

Downloading fine for me via Pando Evil Booster. I'm pretty sure, but can't prove, that they are fun by the devil.

I go to the download page, but can't download the client. Have they started allowing the client to be downloaded yet?

@(Unverified) nevermind. I guess you have to have pando evil booster installed. So I clicked Play all the way at the top and it started downloading pando evil booster. You would think they would have something saying you need to download pando evil booster first or something.

Dragon's Nest Closed beta was a blast, the game plays like a faster Vindictus... and for anyone that doesn't know what that's like then more or less picture gameplay very similar to a console action game ala gods of war, but with added classes, talent trees, and gearing features commonly found in MMOs.

A lot of people are turned off by how instanced the game is. You will basically find yourself going to a social hub where you collect quests and see other players... the hubs are organized into channels so they wont overflow with players, but you can expect to see a healthy number of other people. When you venture out you'll go through a loading screen (that is super annoying) to an instanced area that typically branches off into several paths that then take you to a semi-randomized linear zone that contains puzzles, lots of mobs specific to that zone, and an endboss specific to that zone. Depending on what quests you have, the zone can play out differently or have more or less of specific mobs and puzzles, a lot like phasing in world of warcraft. In a party this adds variety. Quests also tend to have some really nicely done cutscenes that are tastefully short, yet still expressive of the story they're meant to advance... you'll still find yourself skipping them if you're grinding an area, but I suspect you'll still enjoy revisiting them from time to time.

Classwise, the game plays very differently between roles, and within classes roles change depending on advancement. The ranged classes play more like a FPS. Line of sight matters a lot so you'll find yourself working on positioning as well as aiming (this is super awesome). Melee classes need to be mindful of their health and what they can handle- rushing in and mashing buttons will work on easier levels, but when you start grinding the higher difficulty lairs you need to play with strategy. For the tanking roles this means you don't just stand there and play roshambo with the mobs, you more or less taunt them and then dodge their unique attacks. For healers you will mostly be concerning yourself with the control of space by plopping down "relics" which are a lot like WoW's totems. The different relics will damage mobs or heal / buff the party while you more or less CC straggling mobs that could overwhelm the tank (due to positioning or the amount of mobs attacking him/her), or lightly dps low health targets to help clear the room.

PvP wasn't available during closed beta, but the videos on youtube make it look like there is dueling and an 8v8 mode. I would wet my pants if they put in a capture the flag and king of the hill mode.

Cashshop wise: I was able to ask and have the NA devs answer the age old question of will the game be Pay-to-win? They said items were mostly cosmetic. I'd say we really won't know the answer to that for at least 6+ months after launch, but as it stands its good to at least hear them say that they won't break the game with money.

@(Unverified) : poking around the forums it looks like there are different pvp modes, and it looks like all gear ignores the +X upgrade system, making everything in PvP about cosmetics / aesthetics.

THIS BODES WELL

@(Unverified) Correct me if Im wrong, its similar in gameplay to D&D Online or Guildwars? NOT THE COMBAT, but the basic interaction / Gameplay, with the hubs & junk.

The cash shop looks like it's a gouge fest- 13 bucks for a beginner pack with a total of 5 bag slots (and 5 bank slots), and it looks as though the games AH will require you to spend real money in order to post x items.

At the they are giving everyone some currency that expires at the end of open beta, but the only things in the cash shop are consumables (which is really cruddy considering they've been advertising "come play beta and get free cash shop items that YOU KEEP FOREVER"... then you get in and find out theres nothing perma.

So right now the problems are that the game is fun but the cash shop looks like it could ruin it by putting MT everywhere, followed by prices that border on "Allods insane" high.

As I mentioned in the forums, at 13 bucks per char for the starter stuff, theyve insured that at most ill only pick up one, and i'll do it begrudgingly. At 5 bucks I would more than likely pick up 3-4 over the course of a year and be able to focus more on being excited for wanting to roll another char, so they're shooting themselves in the foot (at least with me and a few others ive talked to).
