The hours spent on a Jedi Outcast dueling server, how I miss thee. Thanks for the reminder and memories. :)

You build one focoff big server and instance the areas up if there's to many people in any given spot. Just like Aion did but without the different servers.

I can't understand for the life of me why no at all other than like EVE and Perpetuum have done this yet. Having all players in one sever (or maybe 3 around the world total because of lag) would be frikking amazing. No more server transfers, no more dead server.

Again can't understand at all why this isn't common practice.

because having 400 servers makes the game look like it's a raging success.

or at least it does to the shareholders who are generally clueless about the products that their company sells.

as for an a technical benefit: if EVE or perpetum have a server problem then their entire product is off line; with multiple servers you can have a problem with one server without your entire player base getting locked out of the game while you fix it.

If you're talking about sharding, I know people dislike it because of the artificiality of it. Kind of breaks immersion to have to switch to Tatooine #2 even though you're standing in the same spot. They have said they're using this in the beginning to alleviate congestion, but they'll be phasing it out over time, ideally removing it completely.

immersion will be shattered the second your side kick pops out of existence when you hop on a mount, not to mention when the holiday season rolls around and they start giving out Ewok hats and Rancor mini pets.

Yeah, but sharding would make it all the worse. That stuff I can overlook, heavy instancing is harder to ignore.

Count me as someone who just doesn't care.

I'll be playing this game; it certainly looks fun. But I won't be playing until a few months after its release, since (1) I want to avoid the antelope stampede of players at launch and (2) I'm quite content to wait a few months till the price comes down, which it probably will once the next great game (GW2?) gets released.

The only game I intend to play from the get go is Neverwinter, which sounds like a perfect fit for me. GW2, TSW, and SWTOR are all on my radar, and I'll get to them all ... eventually.

Bioware is free to release their game in any way they see fit; my knickers will not get twisted over this kind of (non)issue.

The Limited Edition version should be interesting to watch... nearly every MMO "limited edition" has been limited to how many they could sell.

The thinking may be to grab the $149.95 flavor to speculate on ebay, but not since WoW's Burning Crusade has any of them gained any value... in fact most are still sold at discount prices from 'anywhere' Asia ebay.

So if you are a SW fan and want the statue, book and the rest of God's own merch... jump on it, if you are a speculator... good luck.

The staggered release is a good idea... no one wants 12hr queues at launch, an nobody wants to end up on a server with 12 players after the first month.
Also, a game like this needs fans to start the MMO 'engine', guilds, crafting, boss info, guides and places to get the inside info. A game with no community is barren, you are left to wonder if you missing it all... or made the wrong choices. It's like the crew at Disney turning on the lights and flipping the switches... all to welcome those to follow.

I'll be there, and may the force be strong with you. (sorry, could not resist!)

Who is saying that the servers wont be barren after month of two even with limited sales at release ? Its not like ppl leaving after first week are a sign for others to get into the game. The logic is flawed. Bioware has huge amount of time to prepair for the launch. They have pre-orders so they know how many will be going into the game. Limiting based on Pre-order is stupid and show total lack of respect to custimors.

Because there's basically a guaranteed playerbase. There's a lot of fans that will play this and stick with it. If games like STO, Rift, WAR, DDO, etc. can survive, a game of this size and ambition is likely to keep at least the 500k that they need to keep going (I believe that was their last reported minimum for profitability). And that's being pessimistic. If you want to be even-handed about it, 1 million isn't out of the question, and if you're an optimist, the sky's the limit.

That being said, I expect that there will be an initial massive surge of players, followed by a change after the first month or two as players who aren't satisfied leave and new players who are interested join. At this point, BioWare can assess the population and either add more servers or remove the sharding they're going to have. Whether the population grows, plateaus or drops down after those first couple months, it's in BioWare's best interests to stagger and limit things initially to keep it from getting out of control.

EA wants this to be a mega-hit like WoW, but BioWare has been moving forward with the simple goal of having everything work and be fun. If launch goes off without a hitch, that will reflect well on BioWare as a fledgling MMO company, despite the frustration caused by this decision.

Its up to a buisness to respond to demand for a product. If Bioware intend to launch 20 servers and stick to that because thats all they need to come out in profit... then fine.

I will then be 1 of those that has zero intrest of playing the game. Cause making money and satisfying potential custimors is two totally diffrent things.

It's just a marketing ploy. /shrug

Limit the supply of something, no matter how artificially, and people line up to get it. It's so "limited" that Amazon sent me an email today urging me to buy it.

Fortunately, I have zero interest in this game.

Dont know really. I will not be buying the game now until 2-3 months in (at least). I might have fallen for the hype few days before launch but this prevents me from that :D (thankfully)

The game better be decent at launch or negative feedback will drown all chance of Bioware to get ppl buying the game after launch.

1.) Are there international and country laws stopping this from occurring?
2.) Has anyone investigated this legal point who is a professional journalists before everyone makes an assumption?
3.) Not all countries are as open to digital sales.

I am not defending BioWare here but lets base the foundation of an argument on facts so we can get this squared away as consumers and then rally properly under legal measure. It is almost as bad no one understanding how much money the US has to borrow to support its own wars, medicare, and social security without knowing where the money comes from- just saying.

@Lateris There are no laws or restrictions that prevent digital sales in Argentina. I can buy every game that was ever released in a digital platform in the west without any problem, including mmos, except for this one.

Also, there are no restrictions about content or ratings like in other countries. Our government really doesn't care about that stuff.

I can understand why they can't launch box sales worldwide, that looks like a logistics nightmare, but I'm dumbfounded about the digital restrictions. They don't have to ship anything and my money is as good as everyone's.

For a second I thought they didn't like money, but then I remembered we were talking about EA.

EA might run afoul of false advertisement laws around the world, since they sent emails to players around the world telling them to pre-order, but didn't allow them to do so.

Also, the Brazilian version of the Origin store is running an advert telling pre-orders are open, but Brazilian users can't actually pre-order. Which, at least in this case, is even more clear cut, since it can be classified as an advertisement directed to Brazilians, containing an open offer that is not, currently, being honored.

This stinks of EA sticking their nose in Bioware's business. It's gotten worse lately, like when they forced them to rush out a crappy sequel to Dragon Age.

EA needs to let BioWare handle their own stuff.

@LeStryfe79

Foreigners? US/EU contains 28 countries. 29 if you count pre-ordering allowance at Gamestops in Canada. So that's 28 countires outside the country you are posting in that is foreign to you. So perhaps you can drop whatever nationalist flamebait card your trying to throw up here...and instead politely address those outside the SWTOR's pre-order sphere with respect. Since you wouldn't want to be in their shoes. Just saying.
