Personally, I'm getting a little tired of these tiny morsels. It's not making the wait any more fun. Both ArenaNet and Bioware are really taking this whole hyping thing way too far. Don't feed your (potential) customers small scrap after small scrap, but give them a few good chuncks to sink their teeth in. Really build up anticipation by making big fires of insanely high temperatures, rather than keeping a small fire going with an occasional spark.

I know ArenaNet's creed is "when it's done", but I don't think I'm far off the mark when I say that most people are more interested in a release date than yet another (though very interesting) scrap of information.

Same here. Same with SWTOR and TERA.

Really sometimes less is more. If they keep dragging it out in little teeny dribbles I just feel like I've already played the game.

Far too much hype for these games. I might just pass on them when they finally come out...I know everything about them inside and out...so whats left really. O_O

Race Weeks are much more than a few scraps of information. Everyone so far has been a fairly large ordeal, revealing numerous locations, more gameplay, and a ton of lore.

Completely agreed, though my feelings are the strongest for TERA, because I would really like someone to make an MMO that successfully pitches skill-based combat where gear only matters after your skill has landed the hit/combo etc. I'd go in for Hello Kitty: Deathmatch if it were an MMO with some good action combat and the persistent world of an MMO - so I really have high hopes for TERA, but they are grounded by skepticism until the game releases and I see what it's actually all about.

The hype train for the games you've mentioned is indeed, ridiculous. They're going to kill my freaking interest if they keep giving me lore updates and character backgrounds and images of new bosses that are revealed that I CANNOT FIGHT AGAINST BECAUSE THE GAME IS NOT OUT YET. Bastards.

You're preaching to the choir. I love GW, but so help me these little snippets are boring the tar out of me, and the gameplay videos are also a snorefest. I'm looking forward to the game yes, don't get me wrong, but this milking the hype thing is starting to remind me of what Dungeon Defenders did with it's attempt release on consoles and PC.

I want the game to just come out already. I'm... bored. Just like Diablo 3. It was awesome and I couldn't wait... a few years ago. Now it's a few years ago, I've stopped reading any of their news updates, and I just don't care anymore. The hype is over for me, I've moved on.

@Lenn I'm sick of the AAA studios and their 'trade secrets' mindset.

It's to the point that I no longer CARE about titles like GW2 and SW:TOR.

Torchlight is doing a better job of iterating their MMO development. I'll pay for incremental single-player games that develop INTO MMOs, because I get more dialog in how those games are developed at the early stages.

What use are these financially overleveraged 'rockstar' AAA studios, when their business practices lock them in an ivory tower?

The problem with this drip draining information is that it heightens anticipation and runs a real danger of making expectations so high, it can never deliver. TOR has done this (I've played it) and my backlash against it has been fierce because the picture they built up in my head was nothing like what I got to play. So you're right, there's a serious risk being run because if the game doesn't deliver, the protracted wait is going to create a storm that might dissuade on the fence potential customers to steer well clear. Because you're giving so little information, you're letting imaginations run riot, having to control over expectations is a recipe for disaster.

TBH, they should either just stfu or be more forthcoming (without the subterfuge Bioware are coating their words with at trade faires and cons that build expectations in a direction they have not gone to).

Eh, call me when they announce the 8th class, sylvari don't really hold that much appeal for me. I'm not compellingly tied to them as the straight-up elf expies they ostensibly were before, if the redesign is to ensure they get a proper dose of steroids, like WoW's blood elves before them, I'm even less enthused.

I don't think ANet runs a huge risk of losing momentum - I can't really think of a studio that's "more forthcoming." Provided the finished product pays off, "it's ready when it's ready" is my preferred response from a game designer.

Dunno, I'm not very financial stable, I live in a country where salaries are pitiful at best (compared to most of Europe) but it just hit me: It's the summer, I do have some money, why not go to GamesCon. I'm 100% sure it's worth the money and well I would love to see GW2 for myself.

I'm so hyped about this game I'm thinking of going to a game convention just to see GW2 ... maybe see something else, but that matters not.

I would like to ask how does GamesCon work ... do you need tickets or anything >.< ???

I remember rushing out to buy the PC Gamer issue that announced Guild Wars 2 on the cover some time in 2007!
I know as well as anyone how long it takes to make games like this so I don't expect it over night, and no one wants it to be rushed but I have to admit I'm getting a little tired of a little bit here then waiting for months (years!) then another little bit followed by a 'highly contraversial'... 'sometime in the future'.

And yeah TERA? couldn't care less by now.

Somehow Apple manages to create massive hype by announcing a product, then releasing 2 months later. Would be nice if MMOs could do the same rather than messing you about for the best part of 3 years.

@BigAndShiny

It also doesn't take Apple nearly as long to rehash a Macbook than it does for a studio to build an MMO from the ground up.

I dunno...I'm not sure what the issue is with the waiting times ot hear AreanNet's reveals on aspect of GW2. Then again, I guess I am used to this pace from Blizz playing WoW all these years. That is, new information coming from them is like watching moss growing on a tombstone. I suspect ArenaNet has a game that is way better than WoW...so like GW2 itself, information will be released when it's ready to be released. /shrug
