Man, I never ever got to check out player housing in Vanguard. It looks amazing, MJ. Those are some very wonderful screenshots too.

Sorry to hear about the casualties of the server merge. :(

Thanks! And as you can see, I really love the subject of housing! It almost isn't fair, because this column doesn't even feel like work hehe.

Agreed! Great description on player housing! Loved how you touched on the function player housing can have with roleplaying and how the guild halls are being used.

My first introduction to player housing was in FFXI, and although extremely limited, helped me immensely in thinking of who my character could be and how his home would be presented and organized. Not to mention how it greatly helped immersion.

With a game like Vanguard and SWG, features like this do wonders for character development.

Love the screenshots as too! Another great read :)

SOE seems to have the market cornered in the housing market, with almost all of their titles having housing.

Player Housing has been something I've never really understood or liked. More customization is great, mind you, but in the form of a house... I just don't see why. Now I must clarify, this is only in games (Like Vanguard it sounds and LOTRO and EQ2) where the housing is sequestered by itself. I full understand and appreciate games like Wurm online where you can just erect your dwelling wherever you want. In fact I LOVE those games. I have an unhealthy obsession with seeing a large untamed and unsettled wilderness and thinking "I'm going to live on that." I blame being American or something.

But purely cosmetic, set aside homes has no appeal to me. I should also point out that I don't RP in the "sit in an area and act" sense. To me, RPing is just being REALLY immersed while playing and making progress as normal. So, organizing a PvP raid with guildmates is RP, as is working in a mine selling iron in the hopes of someday setting up your own operation, but sitting around pretending your character is anything but the 800th dude made on Jan 18th has no appeal. I know some people like that, so I can see the housing point there, but let me put it this way: If a game I'm following announces housing... Meh.

The way I see it, the only way people are going to see your influence on this area is if they explicitly go to your designated creative area and click around. I just think customization loses it's charm completely when it's shackled by such restraints. And I think houses need as least a certain amount (like %50 of the items) of utility. For instance, having your own house should be your spawn point, or function as a vault, or allow you to "hearth" back, claim nearby resources, set up crafting/harvesting nodes, and so on. In other words "Oooh, pretty" doesn't sell me personally.

With all that said, this article was great, and I liked the comments and pictures. So I guess I'm contradicting myself, but I still wouldn't specifically boot up a game to go look at what other people have done, and since I don't expect others to, I'm not sure why anyone would.

@Vazzaroth
I can fully understand wanting utility as well as just decoration. There are many games that do this (and I also love placing my own house out in the wilds, but that's to discuss in games and columns). Luckily, Vanguard's does have some features that offer functionailty.

Owning a house in Vanguard gives you a free recall (port) to the house. Not only that, any house or hall designated as the guild headquarters (a very nice feature is that any house can have this designation so you don't have to be a huge rich guild with a hall to do it) gets another recall to the headquarters. Add that to the bind point and you have three recalls.

On top of that, there are crafting stations on the housing isles so there is easier access for crafters to ply their trade. Each area has banking and mail as well.

Next, add in the storage boxes in houses that can have personal permissions for anyone, and you can easily trade and swap items among friends and guild members as well as store things. As for RP, I found that much business was actually conducted in houses that were specifically made for that, be it a shop front or a tavern.

So I agree that housing works best with functionality and it so happens Vanguard does offer some. Personally, I like exploring and seeing everything a game has to offer, so when you add a player's ingenuity into the mix, it means I will get to see something I haven't seen before. For me, that's a favorite part of gaming.

Thanks for the response! So it sounds like they are cooler than I thought, but I still wish they weren't hidden away on their own. I think good customization options should be something people don't have to go out of their way to see. It should either we on your character, subjecting everyone to it as you wander around, or be something someone can stumble upon suddenly and it has your name engraved on it.

I guess It's just my preference that a game with houses be a sandbox game where housing and the industry behind them is sort of the focus of the game.

My first MMO I have ever played was Ultima Online which featured open player housing, so I am a bit spoiled in the fact that I now expect all my MMOs to have some form of housing. An MMO that does not have any player housing for me is a step in the wrong direction. If we had it in 1997, I expect to have it in 2011.

Now don't get me wrong I don't sit in my house in role play. I just want to display some of my junk and have a constant place to return to when I log out. For me it somehow makes the idea of a persistent world a bit more real.

Nowadays I mostly play DDO which only has guild instance housing (better than nothing). Being a F2P game I think the extra revenue they could generate from housing upgrades and options would be worth it but alas no player housing :(

Great article, I hope to see some reviews of other MMO housing systems in the future.

Oh an article about housing AND Vanguards... You cannot make me more happy MJ Guthrie !

I used to play a lot on Vanguard, and with my guild we had a house, then a guildhall for our meeting. This was a great adventure to build those places and it involved the whole guild. Building the houses (crafting was awesome in Vanguard, but these also requires fighting and diplomacy) was definitively half the fun, because it was a great challenge. But finding the spot and decorating was cool too ! As the guild hall was so big, we decided with map where to put the different facilities, and each room has been decorated by a different member.

Here are some of my screenshots :
- The guildmate in front of our first guild house

- A guild meeting inside the house

- The guildhouse while it was building

The guild left Vanguard a long time ago, merging + helmet update made everyone fly to other games, so I won't be able to make you visit those, unfortunately.

I also enjoyed housing in SWG, but don't have my screenshots with me know (+ it is max 3 urls ;) ). The creation of the house was less interesting and collaborative, but there was even more freedom in placing the house and decorating it. It was also possible to hire PNJ so they "hold" the house for you, selling your items :)
