RIFT founders, check your emails. Trion Worlds has sent out a new offer tied to its Ascend-a-Friend promotion. The program is geared toward early (and multi-month) adopters and their RIFT-less buddies, and aims to bring people together in the world of Telara for hours of adventure and progression.
The founder email features a code that grants your friend a free copy of the game client, and as long as your pal signs up under the Ascend-a-Friend program, he'll count towards your reward total. If you manage to convert three friends, you'll receive an Ember Steed which matches the speed of your fastest mount, and probably looks a lot nicer to boot.
Your friend isn't left out in the cold, of course. In addition to a free copy of RIFT, Ascend-a-Friend participants will get a unique in-game title ("The Chosen") as well as the ability to summon (or be summoned) to their referring buddy once every half hour.

I would usually say people are overreacting when others say Trions doing everything to stop the player number from bleeding off, but now I'm not so sure.

I don't know- I like that they are going above & beyond. I am enjoying my time back in Rift, much more character options then I ever had in WoW.
I just purchased The Limited Collectors Edition of SW:TOR so who knows how much time I would play Rift once Tor goes live, but till then they can have my money :D

I don't know if you meant it to come off this way, but it sounds like you're saying that's a bad thing. Honestly you have the choice to stay or not, and if more stuff makes you want to stay then awesome! If not, then use your brain and don't keep paying them.

It isn't anything that other companies, including Blizzard haven't already done. In fact it would be bad business to not do it.
I just wonder why they aren't making any incentives for former-subscribers to come back. A few free days of play time isn't quite the same as this :(

the last but one strategy to gain some players and skew their ever declining numbers to reflect some hope...before SWToR and GW2 force them into freemium-or-close mode.
I reckon by september they will be giving Rift away at school doors...

So Rift should not advertise their product, not have sales, not have incentive for people to get their friends to play, and finally not try to attract new subscribers. This will show that they are strong and more people will come and play.
This is a silly argument. Good companies market their product to more people regardless of whether they are doing good or bad in hopes to be doing better.
Marketing strategy is one of the causes of performance, not a symptom.
If Trion stopped all attempts to market their product...then I'd be worried.

Companies do need to advertise but this reeks of desperation. Rift will be a ghostland when GW2 and SWOTR hit. This is not me hating Rift so much I want it to fail, more than I think it will regardless of how I feel about it. ( seems pretty logical to me)
