@Lenn My thoughts exactly, I wonder if John Smedley turned down the offer first. 0.o

@Lenn Now, if only they can get Garriott to be the game's director.

My response was exactly like yours... except I added a popcorn-eating emote at the end.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I swear this guy must be super charming when it comes to swooning the corporate clueless. Either that or he's sold his soul multiple times.

Once you reach a certain height in the corporate world you start failing upwards. He has reached that point.

It is amazing how many high level corporate people can screw up time and time again and get even bigger positions due to "having experience" and get to screw up again.

An excellent choice. He's got a lot of amazing super-successful games under his belt, like Hellgate, Champions Online, and Star Trek Online.

Oh, wait...

(I'll admit that two of those three are actually pretty decent now, but that only happened AFTER he left. :P)

@Ghostspeaker

Just for clarity, Bill Roper never really had anything to do with Star Trek Online. The two dev teams shared certain resources, but were otherwise separate. Roper led the CO team, but not both.

That said, I do agree that hiring Roper for the Marvel gig is a total /facepalm.

Cheers,

Which probably explains why STO was just a bit underdeveloped instead of being a complete and total fail on release like CO and Hellgate. Thanks for the clarification.

You left out:
Warcraft
Diablo
Diablo II
Starcraft
Brood War

Yeah, it's fun to shit on this guy because the company he started (Flagship) wound up woefully underfunded, and he joined an already awful studio (Cryptic) who has never released anything above mediocre.

@Jenks In that now that he's left both games are actually doing much better (arguably)?

Yeah, totally not his fault.

In any case, Blizzard still did great work from the time that Bill left up until the time that they fell completely under the thumb of Activision (some would say that they're still doing great work, but I disagree).

From the time that Bill left Blizzard, the projects he's lead have been mediocre at best.

There's no reason to regard him as anything except an accidental success. Just sort of a reminder that like so many things in our society, once you rise to a certain level it seems like it's impossible to ever fail.

How are both games doing much better? They went F2P? Whoopty fucking do. I played champions in the beta, and I played it a few weeks ago when it became available on steam. It's the same shit game, except now you get what you pay for. And for the record, he joined Cryptic late into CO's development.

Yeah, totally his fault.

Oh dear, sweet merciful jeebus, it's all downhill for Disney now. Dollah Bill is in da house. Lock up your credit cards and kiss the Marvel MMO good bye!

Roper gets a high executive position. I wonder what Abobo's up to...

/Wondering how obscure/not obscure the reference is.

He's got a full resume of Mickey Mouse games already. He was the natural choice.
