That screenshot does look nice, shame they essentially said the game will have a store so I won't be seeing that in person.

If they decide to not go with a store they can have my $50 box fee and $15 a month though.

Well, I will try it (for free) and then play it (for free) and, if it doesn't work for me I'll quit and have spent absolutely no money.

Rather than buying a $50 box and THEN finding out it's not my thing.

There once was this now extinct thing called a "trial." That allowed you to do the exact same thing without sacrificing quality.

Smedley said some portion of PS2 will be free. I have no idea what that means though.

It is likely to be freemium like EQ2X, Free Realms and Clone Wars, where you can play a certain amount for free or subscribe for the whole package. Marketplace included on top of course.

I have no issues with a free trial or even an infinite free zone with a lot of limits.

The marketplace, that seems to be guaranteed to happen, is why I won't touch it.

One of the last articles on here had a comment from one of the head people about how Station Cash is meant to be a part of all new products when someone asked about what type of business model PS2 would have.

He did not say "There will be a marketplace", but he might as well have.

To ge to the meat of it, I think were minimum 3 years out from seeing this game,,,, minimum.

Here is my line of thinking, if you have anything that would prove me wrong please post, because it sucks to think I would have to wait this long for it:

I think this game is going to be launched with Sonys console at the same time as its released on PC, very similer to DCUO. Sony has spent alot of $ on their network, and they are still trying to move their console hardware. Whenever a copy sells on a PS3 of a game that is also available on PC Sony makes much more money on the PS3 version.

Also, although it is old here is something I found on Gamespot " SOE president John Smedley answered in the affirmative as to whether all of the game maker's future MMOGs would appear on consoles" http://www.gamespot.com/news/6198595.html?tag=latestheadlines;title;6

Ok, so if we take this information as true, we should expect that since SOE is making Planetside 2, it will indeed be available for its console.

Here is a great video from the announcement:
http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/714461/planetside-2-details-video-the-developers-talk-about-sonys-upcoming-sequel/

At about 29:20 the panel asks for questions, the first one is "Will this be availalbe on PC and PS3? It was quickly answered with a "Next question". Why would you not annouce if your software was going to be available on the hardware the company makes?

Then they go a little further, saying they were the first with DCUO, and then with Free Realms, and then stop. Followed with: "We have other things were working on and not ready to announce" and after that "And maybe not just on PS3".
This was SOE president John Smedly saying these things. So now Planetside will be available on PC and other consoles? I don't think so, Sony is going to keep their IP's to themselves. So what does "not just on PS3" mean?

And this is my argument. This game is being designed and will be released not only for the PC, but for the PS4 whenever it gets announced. This was the reason they cannot answer the questions on when it will be released or for what system. Sony has not official announced or named any successor to the PS3 and prob will not for another year. Then there will be the wait time from annoucment to actually producing it. As we know MMO's are a tough one to crack, and I doubt an FPS mmo that relies on the network so heavily would be a day 1 launch with a new console. So this puts 3 years out at an absolute minimum, and could be much more.

I feel bad because of SOE's track record. They announced "The Agency" a year before the console came out, it was announced at the same time as the Playstation 3. We know what happend to it.

Planetside 2 has been in development for a long time. As a matter of fact John Smedly made this annoucment in January of this year:
"We're looking at late first quarter, early second quarter [2011]," http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/17/soes-smedley-says-mmo-copycats-incoming-drops-hints-on-planets/

This is the same guy in the video in January of this year. Now to go from a possible release in spring to a major annoucment that we will be having major annoucments in the months to come in the summer does not bode well. Again, I guess im scared by the way SOE has been going as of late and the vaporware that was the Agency.

Does anyone have anything that points to a release date in the next 12 months vs my theory of a long wait?

If you have seen section 8 this is basically what Planetside 2 is with a couple more features promised at launch. If i want a shooter i will play BC2 or wait for BF3.

One of Smed's tweets, but wouldn't be surprised if it has been misunderstood, but I don't see why they would announce too early, especially when they said existing PS subscribers would get into Beta... that isn't something you promise years out.

Smedley said, at Fanfire, they were going to release it in the Spring as a F2P add on of PS1. Once they started the project(and Lucas Arts asked for an annulment most likely) they decided to make PS2 a completely new game. So it may not come out this year but that is a GOOD thing. We as consumers will have a viable option and not just another F2P hack.
