Ah, I remember when I was following this game from its first announcement and light powers were supposed to be in at launch. Now they're charging for it? Sounds like this game is in its death throws. Glad I didn't play past beta.

That's a boatload of content for ten bucks. If I were still playing DCUO (only stopped because of the outage, but ended up re-subbing to STO and dont feel like going back right now) I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Indeed. I'm going to take a page from your playbook and go as far as saying that if I were playing EVE, I'd buy a monocle, too. That's nearly $85 of support I could give them.

DLC in a sub based game? SOE is pretty desperate i guess.

Considering this game dont even have enough content to justify the $15 sub charging for this is a massive slap in the face to the few players left.

Typical SOE though. No real long term strategy to keep their games afloat just greedy cash grab after greedy cash grab.

DC made a huge mistake partnering with Sony. How come DC cant manage their icon properties well?

I'm not surprised to see this from SOE, but I expect that more and more big studios will try to pull this (expect you to pay sub as well as pay for non-cosmetic content in the cash shop). It really makes me worried about what we're going to see with TOR, Titan, EverQuest Next, and so on.

I'm a pretty forgiving guy, but SOE just isn't giving themselves a chance here. This is not an xpac, it should be the content promised with the subscription.

I really want to like this game, but Sony doesn't make it easy.

First, they shove the thing out the door at least a year before it's ready, and now they're turning around and charging gamers for content that should have been included in the game in the first place.

For those who don't know, DCUO is essentially a promising beta with two major problems -- problems which may kill the thing if left unadressed.

1) There simply isn't enough single-player PvE content for those who want to play "my character's adventures in a DC-themed universe".

and

2) There are too many servers for the extant player base, so almost every server appears abandoned. SOE was promising big server merges "soon", but then the hack fiasco happened. Who knows where the plan is now?

I don't blame the devs for DCUO; past SOE behavior has shown that the suits do like to push their MMOs out as early as possible to appease shareholders.

BUT

Neither me nor my friends play DCUO now, and many of us /want/ to like it -- there's just not enough actual /game/ there yet for the PvE adventuring crowd.

Ah, Sony, you're blowing it. Wise up.

My opinions, anyway.

Ugh, SOE just seems incapable of putting out unqualified good news. They must have a minimum disappointment standard for their press releases.
There is going to be a new power set that sounds like it will have fundamentally different mechanics than the existing (sounds more like their weapon system) and including new instances, DC characters and styles. This announcement should be good news, but the $10 just kills it. It's not even the price point, it is where it fits in with everything else they are doing.
It's right on the heels of their new market place items, including styles and a legends character that really should have been part of the regular vault. It is like they are holding the game ransom. The pricing doesn't even make sense. A new power and a bunch of content is worth roughly as much as being able to play a variant Joker in PvP or a few styles of wings?
This announcement also precedes the Megaservers. When you can't even get groups for the Update 3 alerts, the option to buy more alerts isn't that tempting.
The DLC also exists in the context of months between the free updates. SOE was promoting DCUO with the claim that it would have monthly free small content updates with a few big free updates each year. They've been blaming approval processes for slowing down the updates, but suddenly you add a couple dollars or a sawbuck and suddenly the content chutes are greased.
I am Excitragepressed about this announcement.

Sciencells prisons. lol.

SCIENCE. CELLS. Two words. They are a thing not a place.

Oh and if people will pay 25 dollars for a glowing horse, they'll pay 10 dollars for lanterns. Besides, the only people still playing are probably lifetimers. Gotta get a revenue stream from somewhere.

I uninstalled yesterday after being unsubbed for a month. Was a good game, it will just never reach it's potential. Like all titles that come from that company.

This reminds me of Cryptic attempting to charge for Vibora Bay. Cryptic did make the smart choice in the end (at the cost of a lot of player outrage and a community manager).

Will SOE, facing the same issue - lack of content in the game - be able to do the same? A big reason I don't think they can is that they have to pay a royalty to DC for every DC character they use. I'm not sure of the royalty structure, but every GL and related character must cost a (comparative) heap.

I smell something a possible hybrid model with a level cap and content restrictions. something like everquest. Otherwise why would they be doing this.I think they have come to conclusion that their subscriptions
have dwindled to basically nothing. Global Agenda was able to bring
back players after going free to play now the servers are well populated
and the queue times are short.
I just wish that SOE would have announced it at Fan Faire, if they are going to the freemium model.

@Furdinand I was using a hyperbole for effect. I played DCUO and initially loved it. Before the boredom set in. The higher up I got, the more I saw how light in content the game really was. SO I cancelled my sub. Something which a lot of others were doing as well, apparently, because the servers were beyond dead. After SOE's security trouble I went back and played for a bit (it was free and my characters got a nifty "sorry your personal information that you entrusted to us was compromised" mask) and the servers were so damn empty I swear I could hear the Joker cry.

And why would Carrot Top need jokes? He is a joke.
