So... does fanart count? Machinima?

@JuliusSeizure

Absolutely, as long as it's using MMO game footage.

@Jef Reahard Booyah! How about those of us who use the City of Heroes' Mission Architect to MAKE our own machinima? :D (Hey, it's the ideal sound stage... choose the map, choose the minions, set yourself to invincible and voila!)

@Samuraiko

Definitely.

We're looking at revisiting City of Heroes to profile the Mission Architect, and we'd also love to showcase high-quality stuff that people make with it.

I think this is a fantastic idea for a column. I'll be looking forward to reading your and MJ's showcases of player generated content in the weeks to come.

Love the name.

hmmm ..and i thought bots couldn't post here :| First time for everything I guess. PS: Does that crap actually net ANY sales? What the hell is even the point of making a bot to spam in forum sites? I have never understood it.

At any rate, new column sounds great. Can't wait to see what you guys come up with to discuss.

It's by most standards, including my own, not an MMO, but Minecraft may none the less be worth looking at once in a while, being one of the best games to show player-made content and creations.

@Giltheryn I think that Minecraft could be to the next generation of MMOs what the DIKU mud was to the first generation of MMOs.

The first generation of MMO was just a 3D overlay on a 2D text game that people had been playing on private indie servers. The current 'WoW Clone' generation still bears that legacy in the chat frame and action bar metagame.

Minecraft holds the popularity that DIKU muds had nearly 20 years ago, but with Minecraft the 3D world isn't tacked-on, it's an integral part of the control system and interface.

I think that Minecraft holds at least a 'top 5' position in any discussion of player-generated content and emergent MMO phenomena. I notice that even X-Box has a Minecraft clone to get the dev tools out there to do work with. I would not be surprised to see DIKU-derived mmos replaced in time with Minecraft-derived MMOs.

@Borick

Some interesting points there, and I hope you're right.

As for Minecraft (and Terraria, etc.), we'll have to see what happens. I'm not opposed to writing about them, but aside from our Not So Massively feature, we are pretty squarely focused on MMOs.

Definitely something we've talked (and will continue talking) about though.

@Jef Reahard Talk about a better low-level 3D interface, that is platform-independent by design, and is completely unburdened by previous IP constraints. Then talk about Microsoft providing a structured development environment for it within a locked market that other MMOs have been unable to crack because their development tools are unsecure with the old model...

I'm with you totally on the focus of the new article, by the way. I'm just a peanut-tosser. Dust 514 might be a 'true' MMO in the works, but the X-Box live crowd seems to be the market to shoot for, and I keep watching that front.

I have a request; can you either make a guide on how to use the CoH Architect system or point to some? Or actually, I would prefer both! (I like to read different perspectives and sometimes I need a simple guide to get started and then when I am comfortable, a more advanced guide.)

I also wouldn't mind a guide(s) for STO's Foundry system (in fact, might be more keen on making content for that game).

@Space Cobra

Yeah we'll definitely do that unless there are a ton of good guides already available (in which case we'll link them and probably interview the authors). I know the Foundry has a dedicated video tutorial site but I haven't looked into it beyond knowing it's there.

Very much anticipating what you guys will cover in SAR! I've always been fascinated with how people use MMO's for expression--and seeing that most of the MMO industry is heavily weighted on theme parks, its great to see more coverage been focused on sand boxes.

Can't wait for the next installment, guys! :)

Sandbox MMO has always been something I'd like to play but I couldn't find one without the grind.
In Neverwinter Nights we can RP, spend infinite time creating awesome character builds and use the Toolset to create huge private servers with dungeons and cities. It came to the point that placing furniture in your house is quite common and some people experiment even with buildings - so I guess I could get you some videos/contact on people like Neus who built a huge server on is own (though pretty imbalanced :D) - as an interesting topic for one article :).

I'm mentioning this because my dream was to play on a server where you could start in one of few settlements, RP, run dungeons build towns without the grind. So I'd be interested if there is a game which allows you to spend less time crafting/gathering and then you and your friends select a spot, start the building process and just wait several days for the building to finish - in the meantime they can RP, PvP, roam or don't have to be online for long. The problem is to limit skill gaining so that you can still dedicate to crafting while limiting characters per account.

Now I hope this column will help me find such an MMO :).

This sounds like a great idea for a column.

Here's crossing my fingers for another AAA sandbox.
