Maybe I missed it. Is it F2P or P2P? Cause I'm not that interested if its P2P with a cash shop. But if they keep the station pass at $20 I'll go for it b/c I play will play EQ2 more than this game anyway.

Lots of people asking this question:

IMO, I think it will be treated like most other SOE titles; it will first be sub-based and then either have a cash shop later on or cash shop with f2p. This is judging by SOE's history of launches.

However, the thing that sorta held me back playing the first Planetside when it came out was that I felt it didn't justify a sub. I know it is a persistent world and all, but for FPS, I coulda logged into Quake or a pre-CoA match for the same visceral effect but without the stat-building RPG persistent one. That may change for me, since I am older and more secure financially, but there is still APB and Global Agenda out there...

Needless to say, I am interested and the 3 faction thing is a plus. (and Sci-Fi, too!)

Really, in this day and age, it would be best to launch f2p with a cash shop, but SOE may go it's old route of Sub-based first and eventual f2p later on.

Well, they only made one MMO F2P and that was EQ2. But considering Smokejumper is in charge of both EQ's now, I can see that going F2P. He is a F2P guy.

Initial Digital sales can be huge and make up debt very quickly. I think they will at least have a box sale.

I do hope its f2p though. I don't mind cash shops that much.

@Space Cobra "like most other SOE titles" didn't they make only EQ2 f2p? and even that can't really be called f2p but rather freemium...Anyway, I don't see a justifying reason for a sub as a shooter but the progression and customization details they outlined make it kinda justifying. It's not like I played the first game tho so I wouldn't know. The concept is pretty interesting tho.

I am pretty scared right now. They are totally avoiding many basic and big questions. Along with the payment type, how about "what quarter of what year is planned release?" or "what systems will this be on?".

When a company has a large annoucment and goes as far to have a countdown timer on a website for a big annoucment, and then annouces that they will be having annoucments in the coming months for a product that was supposed to hit shelves 3 months ago.... I worry.
http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/planetside-2/1144349p1.html

The whole cryptic;
"We were first with DCUO, second with Free Realms, and we have other things planned, possibly beyond even the PS3."
To me screams "were gonna have it on the next get playstation console,,,,,, Can we say The Agency???

With the Dev cycle as long as this has been, with the SOE President John Smedley, saying in January of this year it would be out in the Spring and now this,,,, This game is looking more and more to be vaporware...

I am pretty sure Developer want to sell their games, to do this they have to give you every reason in the book to purchase theirs over the competition. This lack of base info this far into the year has me fearing if this game will ever see the light of day. I don't care how many people say "take all the time they need to make it right" bottom line is its a business, the longer it takes to develop, the more it costs, and at some point someone will say "we will never make this money back" Again, RIP The Agency

Pretty sure its P2P with a cash shop for vanity items. He mentioned no items that affect gameplay.

This game sounds AMAZING. Everything I could honestly want in an MMO. Now I just hope it works out. I also hope its not years away.

Well it doesn't have Chris Cao infecting it, so the game has that going for it so far!

@Faith Agreed! CC was responsible for keeping invulnerability out of DCUO. A friggin' DC game with no invulnerability. Unbelievable.

PS2 - nice I've been looking forward to something like this...

Cash Shop - Nevermind, won't ever pick the game up. Yes, most cash shops start out as 100% vanity items. However, almost no cash shop stays that way for long. I literally do not pick up a single title that has any kind of cash shop attached to it.

As a side note, how come the submit button stopped showing up on my Internet Explorer? I was hoping it would eventually fix itself but after a couple of weeks I finally just came here through Firefox.

So you claim to know all there is to know about cash shops and the eventual non-vanity items that show up. But then you say that you never pick up a title with a cash shop...

Either I'm paying a subscription for a game, at which point there should never, ever, be any other extra fees/shops tacked on top. Or the game is a "F2P" with a pay to win shop, which I don't want to touch.

Show me a F2P game that has a shop, that has been around for at least 6 months, where you can not buy things that either 1)increase stats 2)increase leveling speed 3)increase chracter options and I will 1)be surprised and 2) then show you 100 more that do.

Every company has learned that vanity items do not sell enough to pay the bills. Stat changes sell a ton (since players know they are necessary to be the best) and do pay the bills. So every shop migrates to a stat affecting shop.

@SnarlingWolf Why then would he want to go through the trouble to show you a f2p game with no non-vanity items in it if you will just reject what he shows you? You just made it clear that it doesn't matter if he proves to you that there are f2p games with only vanity itemsmbecause you would still reject them.

The problem here is that you just don't like cash shops regardless of what they sell. I play many f2p games where I can compete with players who do spend money on stat boosting items and I still win. So cash shops do not break games regardless of whether or not they are selling more then vanity items.

Btw you counteracted yourself in your posts. If a game was "pay to play", and the only way "free to play" games can make money is by adding stat changing items to their shop, then why would a game that is already making money off of player based subscriptions need to add more then vanity items? Again, you just hate cash shops, it doesn't matter what they are selling.

I never got to play the original in it's heyday because I was not that into PVPRPGs (DAoC, Shadowbane) back then. Definitely excited about this title.

This game needs to be freemium to work in the long run.

First off. F2P invariably ends up having a terrible community without the ability to ban cheaters, and exploiters. I strongly believe every game needs to either have some initial start up fee to discourage hacks, as well as a strong company devoted to keeping their game clean.

I am willing to pay extra to keep a good game from becoming a cesspool.

Secondly anyone who refuses to play games with cash shops will see their choices diminish greatly in the next few years. It is a proven money maker for publishers. The vocal minority that cry about it will never have more effect on than the people who spend money. Get used to it, cash shops are here to stay.

This worries me a bit. Any game that comes out on PC AND consoles is typically dumbed down for the console crowd. This of course is a great marketing ploy, but it always leaves us PC gamers with a bit of resentment toward the developers.

Errr...its a shooter. Can't dumb down a game any more than a shooter.

Because automatically swinging swords and lightning bolts at AI enemies is so much harder than aiming at real people trying to avoid getting hit?
