Sony Online Entertainment's big Planetside 2 announcement came and went last night, and while we don't have a release date as of yet, we do have a trailer, plenty of screenshots, and a fairly detailed fact sheet and official press release thanks to the folks at Fan Faire.
For you rookies, Planetside 2 is a re-imagining of the popular MMOFPS, and SOE is deploying its new Forgelight MMO engine in order to make thousand-player online battles a reality. Planetside 2 will feature three factions that will seem familiar to long-time fans, and players will be able to choose between the Terran Republic, the New Conglomerate, or the Vanu Sovereignty before heading off to the kill zones. Choice also plays into Planetside 2's character advancement, as the game boasts what SOE is calling a "free-form class-based system" complete with skill trees and unique combat roles.
Weapons, vehicles, and outfits are all customizable, and SOE's fact sheet also drops a curious player-generated content hint relating to the game's mission system. "Both SOE and players will be able to drive content, easing new players into the game and allowing veterans to feed content to players," says the press release.
Finally, Planetside 2 will feature that rarest of MMO prizes: a reason for all the fighting. The core gameplay revolves around holding territories and controlling resources (as opposed to just a match timer). "Battles will last for days or weeks, and finally taking control of the base means it's yours until someone can take it back," SOE says.

It will be like Global Agenda. Probably deeper. SOE is good at making time sinks. They used Eve as a description and that game is massive.

I want to know more about this "free-form class-based system". I liked how the original does it. I would almost call the original a "free-form class-based system" but you really only got into classes if you fully specced something. Even then you could usually still drive something as well.

I suppose this is aimed at Dust514. Good move by SOE.

Not exactly,
PS2 is PC only. Dust514 is PS3 exclusive. No competition, at least from a platform perspective.
I'm sure the platform specs for PS2 was a consideration in SOE's negotiations with CCP over Dust514.
Actually I think the BAD move here is CCP's .. their player base will love the Eve-esque nature of PS2. But how many would be likely to pony up the bucks to buy a PS3 just to play Dust?

I laughed my ass off when Sony announced the PS4 for next year. Dust514 won't last long and CCP shot itself in the foot on investing so much in integrating it with EVE.
As for Planetside 2, the idea behind the game is really atractive and a 3 faction system will make PvP much more interesting as well as the fact that SOE is taking lessons from EVE online for PS2.
If they introduce a strong crafting system (like player crafted weapons, vehicles and armor) and the possibility of Guild vs guild wars the game will eat up EVE's population.

I wish MAG had been this good. It was fun to play, but ultimately the lack of new maps and actual motivation to be better than the other factions made it end up with a very small use rbase.

To be honest, that was the exact same problem Planetside has suffered from all these years. It had one rushed expansion pack bringing in a bunch of cave fights that weren't too popular, and a few "battle islands" a few years later and that was it, in a nearly eighty year old game, for "New maps" to fight over.
Hopefully, this time we can look forward to timely updates and new content, or even a well implemented system for players to make their own, although I've no idea what they actually mean by this in terms of Planetside 2. The original wasn't exactly known for it's many quests, though I suppose "Kill Ten Rats" would be interchangeable with "Kill Ten Vanu".

@JohnLane It's nothing like GA, aside from having guns. It's like PS1, but with a grind and time sinks.

Firefall is going to beat the shit out of this.

@(Unverified) Why do you think that? Firefall looks cool but from what I can see it's just an on-foot deathmatch game with some MMO elements.
PS2 looks more like a sci-fi version of battlefield with a lot of MMO features and progression.

deathmatch is the arena versions.
There is a whole persistent non-instanced world in firefall. with pretty much everything PS2 so far offers + dynamic random content appearing + dynamic landscapes + both vertical and horizontal progression + tribes-feel
