I really hate how the term MMO gets slapped on basically anything these days. I enjoyed Planetside while it was teeming with players, but frankly it was as much an MMO as Battlefield 2 was, and while I'm likely to be one of the first through the gates for Planetside 2 (a game like this is going to be best at release), calling it an MMO is just downright silly.

The problem of course is pricing. The pricing for Planetside made little sense since it was essentially a persistent online shooter, with little difference from the plethora of free shooters (well, other than the box price) out there. I doubt a subscription for Planetside 2 is going to make much sense either. I'll still gladly pay it (or more accurately, buy the box and play for the first 30 days free), since I'm sure there'll be a vibrant population for those first 30 days, but I don't see it keeping that vibrant population as there are plenty of quality shooter alternatives that do not have subscriptions (or cash shops), and ultimately, Planetside was a shooter, and I don't see Planetside 2 being much different in that regard.

Well, if they can combine Eve and PS, people will pay. If they keep that Station access at $20, people will definitely pay.

obvious troll is obvious, planetside in 2003, 500 players per map, BF2 in 2005, 64. uncomparable.

it was definitely an MMO. It was / is more of an MMO than games like AoC which give different instances of zones.

Bah, I take back anything I said as positive. SOE just put more cash shop items into DCUO. One item that was supposed to be included in the game at launch and they pretended like the players haven't figured out how to unlock it yet.(Joker Legends character). They also put in more styles knowing the population is complaining about the lack of styles. Sorry, but management has got to go.

@Yellowdancer This is outrageous. Somehow they couldn't make monthly content updates work, but they have no problem putting new content in the cash shop? It's like they looked around and saw that some people were playing and thought "No, this will not do. This will not do at all".
For heavens sake, they made a key part of the game being able to pvp as DC characters and then they turn around and stick one of the most iconic DC characters behind a microtransaction.
I'm starting to think they aren't really a game company. A game company is a business and businesses try to make money. SOE is more like a behavioral experiment set up by the military to see how much abuse gamers will take before they give up on games they really loved.

That isn't a trailer! That's just a video of people shooting at each other! I'm not excited, I'm not intrigued, I'm just left thinking; "That must be one boring shooter..."
Meh give me something better SOE, this ain't worth getting excited about.

@Dirame

Usually it's the expensive, glossy, pre-rendered trailers that give you no idea of the actual gameplay that people don't like. :D

@pcgneurotic

yea, Ill take the the real footage thanks, thats just a tower battle, it looks pretty cool, like in all gameplay demos they have people running around like spastics in the open but still, amazing.

@pcgneurotic That's a valid point, but the gameplay presented in the video looked kind of...dumb.

Though it is in early development, so there's no real judgement right now.

I just hope they take care of the hacking problem the previous game had.

oh my god! It's all I was hoping for! Mostly the same game as PS, with better graphics, a new Vanu Art Direction, more customization and no motherfrakking BFRs :D I am very very happy! ^^ Also I much prefer SoE to FunCom and Blizzvision....

I'm deffinately loving the new graphics and seeing some serious footage of the new Planetside game, but I'm not seeing the massive battles I need to witness before I can turn of my criticism and give in to the inner drooling fanboy.

I'll be looking forward to the announcements though. If I worshipped a diety, I would pray to it that they weren't going to say something horrible like "PS3 Exclusive" that murdered my interest in a certain other title.

Hmm, wasnt there a failed MMO space shooter that had dropins like it showed in that vid? I forget the name. The graphics look ok but it looks really pretty much like that failed game, and i wish i could remember the name, a few folks might remember it.
