But they cannot post on the forums. Which is ridiculous. According to Craig on the forums, they are considering allowing access to a F2P forum, but they can't allow general access because "troublemakers" who get banned will be able to post under newly created F2P accounts. This is just another display of the grossly hostile and antagonistic relationship Funcom has fostered with its player base. They are essentially crapping on tens of thousands of potential paying customers so they don't have to step up their moderation efforts on a few bad apples. Pretty disgusting in my opinion, but par for course with Funcom.

Another potentially shady development is that past AoC subscribers who previously purchased the Godslayer expansion pack do not actually have access to it as a F2P player, contrary to what was early written, and what remains posted, in the Forum's f2p FAQ and various other places. I'm not sure if this is a bug, or if Funcom deliberately misled people into buying the expansion pack and re-subbing for a month before the F2P conversion, but it definitely smells fishy, and decidedly Funcom.

@Plastic

Having separate forums for free and subscribing members is common practice in freemium mmos. It is not something Funcom invented to irritate you.

As for the Godslayer expansion being available to froobs (free players), I'm surprised an account with the expansion can be played free. In Anarchy Online (Funcom's first mmo which just had its 10th anniversary), an account with Shadowlands expansion has to be subbed and can never go back to free.

I never wrote that they did it to irritate me, I wrote that they did it to avoid having to step-up their moderation (a paraphrasing of their own words). Turbine, Cryptic, and others seem to manage universal forums just fine, and Funcom's inability/unwillingness to do so IS a poor reflection on their company, as it is on any other company that goes this route.

In regards to Anarchy Online's handling of expansions, are you suggesting potential players of AoC should look at that 10 year old game to determine how the F2P system will work in AoC, rather than the official statements on the AoC forums?

@Plastic If they let free players have the run of the forums, the poor mods would be up to their eyeballs deleting gold selling posts.

Unless they intend to leave the F2P forums unmoderated (highly unlikely), they will need to delete these spam advertisements regardless of their location.

@Ordegar so your surprise must only be related to Funcom's method of f2p because the other AAA titles that went f2p - LOTRO,CO,POTBS there is no problem switching from being a paid customer and going back to f2p when it is convenient for you.
@Stormwalker hehe gold sellers-I saw a few the 2nd day of AoC f2p which was a "few" more than I have seen in any of the 3 titles I mentioned above.Which I find interesting because the population in AoC seemed maybe the same as POTBS and alot smaller than LOTRO and CO well at least as far as those active in chat is concerned hehe

Also, im looking forward to playing the border range you posted about a couple weeks ago this week!
Pity you don't play on the EU servers. They seem to have much higher populations than US.

I'll probably get around to this eventually, but from what I read before it didn't sound like you could slowly buy everything as a free player and basically be similar to a VIP. I understand that usually it is cheaper to just pay the 15 bucks a month then to buy everything but as a slow player I very much prefer the buy as you go method. At any rate I have too many other MMOs that I am actively engaged in to add another one. If Conan had gotten in the done this sooner I probably would of been more interested. Although in the past there have been a couple of games that I didn't really care about but after reading enough massively articles I just had to check them out.

Well, I decided to give AoC another try with this new Unchained option. I do recall starting a trial account a year ago was it when that became available.

One of the primary reasons I never got into AoC in the past and this may sound really stupid to many of you ~ you could not darken the BG of the chat box. So I logged in, made a new Barbarian char, the game loaded and for fracks sake, why has this still not become an option. I cannot read the text very well with the bright colors of the game world as the background.

Its just absurd to me, that such a simple feature has been left unavailable...

Um... you can darken it. :)

you are looking for "tranparency". - Cheers and welcome back!

I'm with you there. I don't often go for custom UIs in my MMOs, but the chat box thing made it a necessity. The good news is that the AOC UI installer (a third-party program) makes installs a snap, and there's a few good ones to choose from.

I like MirageUI (which does some nice stuff with chat text colors, among other things), but I'm going to check out Stonerune just to see why it's the most popular.

@Equillian

Just checked again to make sure I didn't miss something, but there is no transparency option anywhere that I've been able to locate.

I also just tried to use the Mirage UI as Jef suggested and all I got was a ton of errors when I started AoC and it didn't load.

Ok, nevermind...found it hidden in the options menu....thought it would be from right clicking the chatbox where its at in pretty much every other MMO.

Better, but why can't we add custom colors to the chat options...would help, unless that too is something I havn't yet discovered....le sigh!

I'll probably give this gig another go if/when they add it to Steam's new F2P section.

I don't understand these comments, and I'm seeing them everywhere now. Steam is awesome, I'm not denying that, but how you won't touch it unless it's downloaded through Steam?

It's just easier I guess. You have to click one button to download to your Steam libary. I don't get it either, but I can also see the appeal of keeping all of your games in one place (Steam libary).
