In both the Oxford and AP Stylebooks, it's considered customary for writers to spell out an acronym in full the first time it's used in an article, unless said acronym is universally recognized. Even then, first use in full is preferred as a point of clarity.

@mysecretid Good call, I've edited the post to spell out what DotA stands for on its first use. I forgot that not everyone reading this will be familiar with Warcraft 3 mod Defense of the Ancients and the many MOBAs based on its gameplay.

Whether it's "proper" or not, any Massively reader who is unfamiliar with the meaning of DotA (or MOBA for that matter) should probably hang it up and find another pastime...

...either that or take the 15 seconds to open a new tab and search the term. The education might actually do them some good! Maybe.

In my opinion, regardless of what "Oxford" might say, spelling out the meaning of acronyms for the benefit of an audience who already is fully familiar with the term - maybe even helped INVENT it - has the feeling of being talked down to and being handheld with an air of superiority that the poor uninformed reader might not be familiar with an acronym that everyone else already knows.

All I'm getting from your comments is that you're an arrogant elitist who doesn't care about newcomers to the hobby. Is this right?
