Upcoming Darkfall relaunch is 'a new game'

How does a fresh start in the world of Agon grab you? The devs at Aventurine have been making noises about relaunching Darkfall for a while now, but in a new dev blog released earlier today, producer Tasos Flambouras gives us a hint at just how significant the changes are going to be.

"This relaunch is not an expansion. It's a new game we've been developing in parallel with the current version of Darkfall. The scope is massive, and it has been difficult to stay on schedule after several unexpected issues," Flambouras writes.

So, yeah. Whoa. In our best Keanu Reeves voice.

The blog features some further discussion about a new siege system and a political map for the current version of Darkfall, but frankly we're still recovering from the previous paragraph and unsure as to how it all fits together. Is this Darkfall II? Is the current version going away when the relaunch hits? Inquiring minds want to know, and we'll bring you the latest on this story as we learn more.

Did Darkfall also see a surge of players because of the EVE scandal?

Not really. DF isn't really a replacement for EVE; they're both classed as sandboxes, but at the end of the day the setting, scope and features of each game are so vastly different it's hard to pigeonhole them both into one genre.

Perpetuum, however, did see a huge splurge.

Now if only they could relaunch the community...

A thousand times this. Darkfall, while not without its problems, is a solid sandbox game. That being said, the community is by far the worst I have ever encountered in my entirety of playing MMOs. They seem to have created some giant magnet for egocentric manchildren. Few and far between were the people who didn't act like complete assholes who are self entitled to boss everyone else around and then threw a giant hissy fit when you didn't agree. I would definitely give Darkfall another shot if the people playing it weren't so completely obnoxious.

@Ghostspeaker I don't really understand this sentiment about DF. Sure the forums were harsh, but I've never seen forums that weren't. Maybe DF's were worse, but only marginally. Although I'm not currently playing DF, I did in the past, and almost every player I met in-game was cordial and friendly. Even the reds I PM'd on occasion were friendly.

I wonder what a 'new game' entails exactly.

I'll be keeping my eye on this one.

Would you say that the old game is seeing some kind of "Enhancement" that would make it a "New Game"?

Ooh. Something unexpected.

$10 says it's a F2P version that will be run side by side with the P2P one.

I guess the big questions are if a current subscriber needs to buy the game again, AND if there will be a character wipe.

Very excited for this, I stopped playing a few months ago just kinda waiting for the new content/expansion. Can't wait for more info and it's release!

Is Darkfall third person or first person view?

It is a mix of first person and third person. Third person for melee combat and first person for casting and ranged combat.

Or it was last time I played it many moons ago.

I wonder if this time they will have enough copies to sell ;))

I really liked my first month in DF - reminded me of Morrowind in many ways. Would LOVE to see a free version.
