Free-to-play fans are looking at a long weekend filled with new fantasy titles thanks to today's big announcements. If Age of Conan: Unchained isn't your style, perhaps Hellgate Global is. You can find out for sure tonight at 7:30 p.m. EDT as T3 Entertainment takes the wraps off Hellgate's open beta.
The public testing phase will feature four celebratory events: Guild Reservoir, Daily Supplies, To Level in Hell, and Level and Be Rewarded, each of which will grant "valuable prizes" to top players. The open beta also boasts new game modes including PvP duel arenas and the zombie-infested Cow Room.
As an added incentive to check things out, T3's press release mentions a "special prize" in store for everyone who logs in today.

Arrrr. I'll probably be playing this, depending on what time the Killing Floor summer update gets released.

This is essentially the release version of Hellgate: Global, for those unaware. There won't be any character wipe.

Interesting game here BUT....
1.) It's not Free to Play! (as of late, late last night)
2.) The client downloader is a mess and full of bugs. Hardly anyone is able to get the full thing downloaded without tons of problems. The torrent is also tracked by mulitple Anti-P2P companies also.
But in reference to the first part this game most certainly is NOT Free to Play. Last night at the very LAST minute T3 decided to not officially make the game F2P but instead offer the first 2 acts (about 12 levels) for free and charge for the rest. Now while the cost of the "ticket" to play the entire game is only $4, the point is that it's been marketed as free to play and was literally changed at the last moments to a B2P game.
That being said I still think the "DEMO" (which is what it is) should give people an idea of what the game offers and then only a one time fee of $4 is very reasonable, BUT the company should have been more upfront about these plans beforehand and never stated it would unequivocally Free to Play. Misleading and a bit of bait and switch. Now had they been honest about this from the get go I'd have no problems with it, but the midnight (~2am) flip-flop is a bit discouraging.
All I can say is this game has a strong and loyal fan-base from it's original release and alot of people are thrilled to play it again, but this kind of business decision and the messy distribution currently of the client is not a good start for a company that really doesn't have all that much credibility yet in the NA MMO market.

Don't be totally discouraged either but just use caution. And I wouldn't necessarily jump right in yet until they at least get the kinks out of the downloader.
Otherwise it does show potential and I hope that these recent events by T3 are not a sign of more problems to come.

@C Rose anyone that has second thoughts about this game due to a one time $4 fee....
well....
we all are better without them, its obvious their only intention was leeching without ever paying a single cent in the cash shop.
not the kind of customers you would wish for a game, right?

Anyone that gives a company a pass for suddenly changing their pricing plans in the 11th hour...
Well...

I'm in 100% agreement and like I mentioned you do get to play a decent portion of the game to DEMO it out and see if it's worth the $4.
But the point is this shouldn't have been dropped on the Hellgate community at the very last minute like this either. They should have at least stated they may have a small initial fee or say something about it having a limited F2P option with a B2P fee also.
It's not the $4 (which I think is more that fair), it's the way they went about it. And I just want people to be aware of this before they go to download it and expect it to be totally F2P with microtransactions or some other model.

However, if and when they get the client download stable I think I'd recommend we all give it a real shot. Because from what I've seen it looks interesting. And the old fan-base is absolutely IN LOVE with this game. Much like the people who rave about Tabula Rasa and games like that which seem to have a major following but never managed to get a good foothold.
Also the other cool thing is that the distributor is actually creating ALOT of brand new content for the game and not just releasing the old client. They seem to have fixed some performance issues and made totally new zones like Hellgate:Tokyo, which is going to be available at a later date.

@Fynn first, you dont know if they changed their plans or this was their intention all along.
if they truly intended to be shady they wouldnt have told us. and then people wouldnt realize that they couldnt progress without a cash shop item till finding the wall.
second, moaners are not tricking anyone.
they dont care a damn about companies being communicative or not, they simply were happy with what they though was a free game and then they raged when the crude reality of the world struck them. hard.
noone wants underaged morons with zero disposable income in their games.
deal with it

I dunno, you tell me. This article is talking about an "open beta", but it's actually a demo of the global release of the game. And now they've announced that they're "embracing the Ticket System". Next we find out that it costs $4 for access to the later Acts of the game. What else have they not announced?
"One ticket subscription allows for all characters from one account to enter one expansion."
What does this even mean? What counts as an expansion? Do we have to pay again for other parts that may come out later?
Complaining about a fee popping up this late is "moaning"? How much would it have had to be to not count as moaning to you? $10? $20? $50?
Maybe you need to look around, but a lot of free-to-play games are doing very well for themselves, and they're not turning their noses up at the ones taking advantage of that. And just maybe, a few of those freeloaders are hyping the game to their more affluent friends who wouldn't have even tried the game.
It's just a mischaracterization if people expected Hellgate to be the same. Hellgate is now more of a free trial, with a fee to access the rest of the game and an in-game cash shop.

I agree with you there. It's getting to be kind of like a welfare state - all these guys want to play for free whining about exclusivity, going on and on about capitalism and the direction of the industry.
So if you're going to play for free, who pays? Everyone else?

$4 to get access to the entire game? I thought it was $4 per act. Additionally, I wonder if the $4 will include a larger inventory or will we be charged for that as well?

From the cryptic posts I've read from the GM's on the forums it does appear the $4 will include all the content at release for your whole account. Which would be multiple chars. (like maybe 4+, idk).
But like I said it's not the $4 it's the fact that it's coming at such a late and suspicious time.

Oh and here's another announcement which FINALLY cleared up the wording about the "tickets". It's a one-time only fee of $4 for ALL you characters on your account to be able to reach content after Act 2.

@Skai According to the FAQ posted on their forum it says:
Do we have to pay for it monthly or does the ticket have expiration?
- No, the ticket has no expiration and is permanent once the account has been granted access.

Yeah the link I just posted clearly states it's a one-time fee for all the content on all your characters on the entire account. The use of the word "subscription" was poor chosen. The GM even admitted that.
But either way, play the first 2 acts and take your time. Try out a few of the interesting classes and enjoy it. Don't rush through.
Then you'll have a good idea if it's worth it for you I think.
