Sarcastic, genuine, or merely self-promoting? An open letter from GamersFirst's Joshua Hong to Activision-Blizzard's Bobby Kotick following World of Warcraft's surprise move to an indefinite free trial could be all three. "I wanted to congratulate you on taking your first big step to join the Free2Play® revolution," Hong writes.
He certainly isn't shy in expressing what he sees as GamersFirst's great accomplishments in the market: "Having created this market in the western hemisphere, it's very encouraging for us to see the last bastion of the subscription-only online gaming business joining the Free2Play movement... Given our recent success in reviving APB Reloaded, which launched as a subscription-based game we transitioned to Free2Play, we know that the first steps are often the hardest. But the proof is in the metrics, as APB now has more than three times the active player base than when it initially launched as a subscription product. We also plan to repeat this success with Fallen Earth."
Hong continues the letter by "extending [his] friendship and support" to Blizzard, inviting Kotick to the free-to-play party at Gamescom, and hoping that the company's entire library will be made free in the future.

Ha! I love it, Blizzard needs as many shots to their ego's as possible right now. I think they will be F2P by this time next year.

I wouldn't shake Bobby's hand if I was him. The last person that shook hands with him had all his success and credibility stolen from him after his company got absorbed into Kotick's company. I feel kinda bad for Mike actually, but eh, we warned him. Now he's just a peon that reports to a Kotick Yesman after internal restructuring.
Bobby Kotick is a pretty weird name though. I always figured when he came back to Earth and plunged it into chaos, he'd come back with a witty name, like Louis Cypher...

Free to play revolution?
Evidently Mr Hong has never heard of such wonders as a DEMO.
WoW isn't joining your ilk, Sir, not for a long time, if ever.

Dude, Blizzard is just extending the free trial of WoW by an inch. It's still just a demo.

@Dril - Yeah, the definition of "F2P" varies wildly these days. Some games are mostly free to play. Others are cut offs at the 1/3rd into the game mark or so. Still others give you 5% of the game, and call themselves F2P. They give you as little as possible and try to call them F2P to get people to come try them. We need to come up with classifications where we can actually list the games correctly.
As a side note, GamersFirst did not introduce F2P here in the West nor did they popularize it. They were not the first. They were not the company that made it viable and popular (those two are different companies, neither had anything to do with GamersFirst however). This guy tooting his own horn welcoming Blizzard, it's just silly, as in relative terms GamersFirst is actually quite new to the F2P party themselves.

Since when has a restricted account trail been a 'transition to Free2Play'

@Valius since the free to play market is so awfully craptastic that they have to claim nonexistent victories to have something to cheer about

I'm starting to wonder if anyone has even looked into how this works.
It's still just a trial. The second you give any money to Blizzard, you are expected to pay a monthly fee. You don't always just have access to making characters under Level 20 or any characters you didn't finish leveling.
Paying anything takes that access away completely.
If this were really a shift to free to play, you'd be able to log into your expired account and make a character and level it to 20. That isn't the case.
I think this is a good idea on Blizzard's part, but calling it free to play is incredibly wrong. There have been other MMORPGs that did this with their trials and I don't recall one of them being described in this way..

Kotick won't give WoW away for free.
But lets be honest. Gamersfirst did this to plug their games. Smart move. Smart move.

Even if WoW would actually have only 5M, why should Blizzard lose guaranteed 45M $/month to join the F2P wagon?
Existing P2P games went F2P because they were doing so few money that their only chance to survive was trying to attract new players with the word "free" and hope for some fast money.
For example, when LotRO devels told "since we went F2P, we tripled our incomes", they were considering the initial amount of money (maybe even big) new players spent to buy classes, races, dungeons...
But after 6 months, were they spending the same amount or they already bought everything they were interested in and continued to play for free?

Kotick and F2P is likely a bad combination.
