Star Wars: The Old Republic community coordinator David Bass unleashed a pleasant surprise on unsuspecting BioWare fans earlier today. In a post on the official TOR forums, Bass told of a playable demo at the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con.
Big deal, I don't have a Comic-Con badge, we hear a few of you saying. Well, take heart. BioWare also recently announced that Mass Effect 3 (as well as downloadable content from Dragon Age II) would be playable at a hotel across the street from the con, and Bass says that The Old Republic will be there as well.
"Anyone (yes even you!) can come to the Hilton and wait in line to play any of the BioWare games," Bass wrote. You'd better get there early, though, and plan on packing your patience as well as a slew of your favorite portable Star Wars games to pass the time.

Pff. Rift was also only announced like a mere 2 months before launch, DCUO like 2-3 months, FFXIV the same. Of GW2, AA, TERA, TSW etc there's also no release date known. The impatience of some is simply mindboggling.
Ontopic, I heard that at some former conventions the rows had more than 5-6 hours of waiting period, having more stands sounds certainly like the way to go.

Sure they have, they've been saying 2nd half of 2011 for a while now. You know it's not coming out this week or next week, you would think if it were due to come out in July or August, it would have been long announced by now to start raking in those preorders. So that likely leaves us, barring any major setbacks (knock on wood), sometime between September-December which never really was any surprise.

They won't mention a release date until Guild Wars 2 shows its hand as well and they won't give Acti-Blizz the time to craft a huge new patch to combat TOR's release. I expect a 6-week window from announcement to shelves.

@Puremallace that arguments hold no water.
GW2 is nonfactor because, while at this point its pretty much set in stone that is THE game release to beat, ANet has showed they dont care at all about their competition, and will not rush the development a single day. They will release when they feel like it, with the confidence that the game IS that good can only give...
WoW is also nonfactor, because honeslty, they probably have that patch almost done or even already done and in the oven.
6 weeks, 6 months or 6 days windows doesnt matter, you can bet your life savings without fear of losing them that whenever SWTOR is announced, Blizzard WILL have that patch to counter it.
If you think about it, the only reason to hide their hand like this is the oldest of reasons...they arent confident in their product and are desperately trying to use every minute they can get to polish the game.

@(Unverified) it's a pretty safe bet that GW2 isn't coming out this year...

Nonsense. I advise you to not drink and post at the same time, they don't go well together.

@Laurs September has always been a reasonable target. If anything, Oct. November has too many hot titles coming out.

@Laurs They've said many times they'd still show the game after launch...

Looks like they want people to get their hands on the game for some feedback? I still expect it to be ready for spring 2012. Hey Jeff- want to bet some AoC gold on it and one B29 flight? HA HA HA!

Lol, nah. I'm steering clear of predicting a date on this one.

I like this very much. It shows Bioware's willingness to 'put up or shut up'.
Hard for haters to argue with this, even if it is a publicity stunt of some kind.

For those curious, here's Daniel Erickson's interview at Comic Con, possibly while he's running around on a speeder doing little to no gameplay demo at all:

...I can't tell you when, but I can confirm that the Release Date has story too! TOR has S-TOR-Y! Its in the name people!" *
