I think the real question here is obvious -- would it be cheaper to ship yourself across the US than buy a plane ticket?

Doesn't count as art in my book. Science maybe.

Science is done in a non-subjective way.
Not science in my book.
Neither is it art.

What a hack......Psuedo intellectual......This proves nothing, nothing at all. Its an attention getting publicity stunt nothing more, nothing less.

This should garner NO media at all. NONE. But we all know when its a slow news day, 'certain' media sites will post their laundry list in a vain attempt to meet their article quota...

Sad...........................

I'm assuming then that he has PTSD? Otherwise, his artistic "study" wouldn't be very accurate or useful. However, it does make you wonder how crazy this guy is if he sits around his house thinking, "I wonder what it would be like to mail myself in a crate while playing LotRO..."

Also, it looks like he has his computer mounted inside the crate. I sure hope he has his computer venting directly out of the crate and has tons of ventilation shafts in the crate, otherwise we may end up finding a well-cooked gamer inside at the end.

Interesting (no need to be against it, if you're not interested in what he's trying to do, that's your own choice).

I imagine the trip itself will be pretty harrowing (traveling in the box across the country).

Why LotRO though?
He should play Darkfall or EVE online. It would be a much more interesting study on PTSD people to see the effect of FFA PvP in this environment.

Is it really possible to ship yourself in a crate? Which shipping company would accept such a cargo?

Cargo crates are not meant to ship people. If something were to happen to him en route (i.e. he died), the shipping company would get sued out of their pants and I doubt the shipping company's insurance company is going to pay up.

It's kind of silly. But my silly self asks the silly question of why traveling? Why not place the box in a public place and let people see it? With cameras to see what's going on inside and such... I'm not sure what shipping himself is supposed to symbolize?

But hey i support him. Other people have done worse and shallower things for attention. And this is dangerous.

@Dumac

My google search-fu fails me.

About a two or more years ago, there was a guy who did as you say and it was on many news shows as a small news item. He basically locked himself in his apartment with no outside contact, but he did have web cams set up and I think he probably did surf the net. It was to last a year, but I think he quit before that deadline for various reasons (I think mainly isolation).

This new person may know that and is trying a different spin on it.

I think the main difference is just the travel. Unless he can get the smoothest truck out there, it's not going to be fun, I'd imagine.

That guy needed to do more research then. In Japan, there's an interesting cultural affect that has produced a group of people called Hikikomori (wikipedia that shit, it's really fascinating actually) which actually does that by choice due to their social anxieties caused by Japanese Culture.

These guys seriously need to find better stuff to research in the future, other then things that are basically a call for attention. Real Hikkikomori's are fascinating, these people are not.

Thank you for that. Fascinating stuff indeed. I wouldn't be so hard on him though, he is bringing visibility to the issues. See how i just found out about hikikomori? :) And i can completely find myself in that wikipedia article.

@Dumac

It's supposed to symbolize the journey of one man, going nowhere.

The journey of the crate is a metaphor for life, constantly moving around us, despite us being trapped inside our crates.

Then the crate sings to you, and caresses your hair while it whispers sweet nothings in your ear.

Then the acid pretty much wears off and you find that you've soiled yourself and are knee deep in cheeseburger wrappers and various other empty food containers.

My questions is how will he stay connected to a solid wireless connection. Last time I checked, crates did not have a cable connection.

What an idiot. Anyone who has gone through PTSD can tell you that its something you can never take back. Its with you for the rest of your life and can lead to both mental and physical ailments for the rest of your life. This guy is trying to invite such a thing upon himself and it has the potential to ruin the rest of his life. A pure moron.
