This is exactly the kind of patch that makes me want to reinstall this game. I hope it lives up to expectations. I have wanted so badly to love this game and I think these changes are going to seriously help with that. Thanks again for the great column Eliot. I look forward to it every week. Keep em coming!

I'm quite ecstatic about this patch and the things to come by summer's end, that I finally bought a new GPU, the last piece of my new PC I started a few months before FFXIV launched last year. I have been holding off after XIV launched because my old GTX 275 was more than capable of running almost every game at a decent FPS....besides XIV ~ even on lower settings it was struggling to pull 18fps on average.

Anyway, I bought the GTX 580, and got a sweet overnight deal through Amazon, and after the rebate I'll have paid $440 for it. Expensive, but damn was it worth every penny. I havn't yet checked what my FPS is now, but I'm now able to play XIV on maximum settings, and at 8xQ MSAA, the 16xQ made the 580 choke...lol

It runs smooth as melted butter now, except after I teleport into a city, when turning corners and entering populated areas NPC and PC} there will be a slight choke of the screen. I'm assuming its just loading the massive amounts of data, but afterwards it runs smooth again.

I'm quite eager to play again with the new auto-attack and whatever other features that are coming with said patch!

I really wish they had spent a little time making sure the game would run well for more people (I know FFXI was the same way, but this is another area where times have changed and SE didn't keep up). :/ I have a feeling the game's population would be doing better if it didn't require such high specs to play it properly--I picked the game up for $15 at Gamestop and I'd be playing now happily if my computer could actually run the thing.

I logged on for the first time since November. You can't seem to use the social tab to see how many people are online anymore. ;p

However, I saw a grand total of three people in the ENTIRE city of Limsa Lominsa as I ran around reacquainting myself with the game over the course of half an hour. Three people. One of whom was crafting, and the other two being afk private stores.

I then went out to do some leves. That took about another half hour. I saw one person during my walk out to the level 30 area and back.

This was on Besaid, which at least back last year in November, was one of, if not the most, populated server (granted, even back then that meant ~1k players online during "primetime").

So, I suspect hardly ANYONE actually plays the game, making me wonder just how SE thinks they're going to revive it and make a return on their heavy investment.

@(Unverified) I think Ul'dah is where the majority of people are nowadays. With it being the center city (akin to Jeuno from XI) people are flocking to it more and more. I chose Gridania for my starting city and it was relatively quiet. Ul'dah is simply chock full of people, too.

This was also on Besaid, as well. Maybe Limsa is the new dead city on there? Last I heard, it was Gridania (and I could certainly see why.)

@StBlackjack

This, and there's more people on at Japanese primetime hours, o course. Being Australian, this is a thing that I have opportunity to notice.

I am SO excited for the addition of auto attack! I dig Final Fantasy XIV, a lot more than I thought I would based off what a lot of people have to say about the game. Other than a few glaring things (like the lack of a /search system, I mean, REALLY?) I've enjoyed it immensely. I haven't been playing it all that much lately, however, but that's due more to the fact I can't find anyone to play with. Pretty much everyone I encounter is Japanese (not that this bothers me, but it's really hard to talk to people who use another language) and the few LS I see advertised are all dead.

Is there anyone on here that plays the game that'd like to team up? Because I am definitely down for it!! My character is pretty weak (I ended up re-rolling on different servers) so I can easily re-roll on a new server. Either way, I'm definitely interested in playing with people, and people from Massively would be even more awesome!

I think most of the people who've stuck with it at all are roleplayers, so they've ended up on Besaid. It's where I play when I get the itch. If you ever see a Lallafel named Pipple Bissonomy, that's me.

I was originally on Besaid when I rolled Gridania, and ended up rolling on another server to one, change my city, and two, someone was telling me about this "totally awesome Linkshell!" that ended up having two members in it once I met them. (No offense to them, just... it really wasn't that totally awesome. >.>)

I have been thinking about re-rolling on Besaid and pretty much plan to at this point, as the server did seem really cool, and the few people I met were really nice (I'm not an RPer on MMO's myself as I usually prefer a dedicated setting such as a MUSH, but I have no problem with them at all.) I don't play nearly as much now because I still play XI (plus the wonderful joy that is school), but I have a feeling the auto-attack and coming changes such as the Job system are going to suck me into the world of Eorzea once again. Who knows, maybe we'll see each other! My name'll be Lirec Eldin, so if you see me, don't be afraid to say hello.

Do I still need to give my credit card number to some random foreign country to play this game? I know they aren't charging a monthly fee, but do you still have to sign up as if they were?
