Prognosticated irony: CCP would never be able to impose EvE-level death penalties on a game filled with the undead. The Emowhinge would be a banshee wail.

@corvid

Torpor, loss of herd, resources, boons, hunting rights, domain...

I think there are a lot of penalties that CCP could associate with getting beaten in a fight.

My concern is exactly that kind of constant street-level brawling and having it actually take away from the original theme of V:tM. The game was never (initially) about being the biggest badass. I don't know how an MMO can uphold that sort of gameplay style. Hopefully CCP intends to try.

@KDolo
I remember hearing something about how they wanted to move away from combat as a focal point, to maintain the feel of the tabletop game.

@corvid
Hey, some of us V:tM players are hoping for permadeath. This ain't Twilight. :P

For some it was DnD for me it was VtM, WtA (Bastet mostly) and LARP, while I don't play it anymore I could see myself (look there he goes now) pre-ordering a copy of the 20th Anniversary Edition of VtM.

@Unshra I grew up with Dungeons and Dragons but grew into the World of Darkness as my first 'MORPG' experience in the old roleplay MU*s.

It would be interesting to see a renaissance of the World of Darkness, but I worry that the invested fanbase will obstruct any attempts to transition their storytelling methods into mechanical systems worthy of 3D gameplay.

We had years of dedicated work in WoD sandboxes back in the MU* days, and trying to nail down the political systems into working gameplay mechanics always led to failure. Our attempts back then were all small-scale, but the experience leaves me a cynic. It will be interesting to see how it works out for them.

@Borick I might see it working out if they had the methuselahs and antis played as server GM/Storytellers.

I hear you, I've been waiting for this darn game for near on five years now, ever since CCP took over white wolf and hinted at a Vampire MMO. This is like the new Duke Nukem, honestly.

@Eric Francis

Predicting they'll show Vampires Quarters, the first iteration of WoD. You'll be able to walk around the room and buy new microtransaction supported clothes to your vampire.

Just to beat complainers to the punch: The price reflects both the immense page count of the book and the rising cost of traditional publishing that demonstrates just why White Wolf have been moving to electronic formats.

Also, the book is in OPEN DEVELOPMENT! Go here, it's awesome and you can have your say on how things are shaping up: http://blog.vampirethemasquerade.com/

IMO I imagine that gameplay will be similar to Eve as players control territories, markets, trading, "wardecs" with other player run guilds or alliances, run missions, and dealing with NPC factions like the Sabbat. werewolves, mages, and hunters. All of this while upholding the Masquerade and having to feed. How the player skills will develop will intresting to say the least. Cant wait to see what actually transpires.

I agree with Eric Francis above! I would like some sense of gameplay, but I wouldnt blame CCP for not releasing alot since ppl are far too quick to criticise.

I want my WOD! :D

The buzz at last years party at the top of the world was so far this game has changed direction five times and is being pulled on from all sides by LARP groups who want their personal vision of the game.

It all adds up to a ERP chat room and a lot of fail to me.

What's with the Hot Topic shoppers in that pic? Are those supposed to be badass vampires?

I take it you have never played any of the vampire masquerade games? The characters in Bloodlines are all dressed up like bad-asses and hookers.

The classic "World of Darkness" fictional world is far more appealing than its predecessors. I hope this new MMO is released with Mark Rein-Hagen ideals in mind and less on Monte Cook. Well anyways this game is worth a look, the single player was filled with tons of social interaction between characters and NPCs. I guarantee it will have a quest in there about killing rats, to suck their blood.

I just hope the WoD MMO keeps the Roleplayer fanbase in mind throughout rather than falling into being like WoW/RIFT/etc., where RPers sort of get a tiny little corner for themselves and the rest is nothing but repetitive PvE/PvP. 'cause this MMO could have a ton of potential as long as it doesn't fall into the hole most MMOs have fallen into.

The biggest difficulty I have in imagining a VtM/WoD MMO is that the beauty of the table top game is that it's about setting and relationships. It's not about combat.

If I'm seducing someone so I can drain then dry, or abusing my ghoul b/c I'm a sadistic fellow, or trying to pull one over on an elder and make it out alive....the enjoyment comes from the belief that this is a fully fledged human being (or vampire) I'm dealing with. They can suffer, they can feel fear, desire, annoyance, regret, shame, etc. etc.

That just doesn't come through at all if I'm dealing with a computer controlled NPC. I just don't know how to get around this.

The setting is still pretty awesome, but the entire focal point of the gameplay will need to be very different than the things that draw me to the pencil-and-paper game. Unless White Wolf manages to do something magical.
