I was gonna ask if anyone remembered when Garriott was still cool, but the guy above me hit it on the head.

Your post is pure bile. I don't see that web site you describe.

Didn't he JUST say that he doesn't play the types of games he designs?

@KDolo

Garriott's exact statement was:
"Even the kinds of games that you might think I would make, I don't generally play, because they're often just too much of a hassle to get into them."

The emphasis is on "games that you might think I would make". He did not say he does not play games he make. You people are like the media, twisting his words to make him say things he never did.

I am not sure why he is still relevant in the MMO industry today ... He has been very clear that he does not play MMO's and is not interested in developing them ...

There can be no doubt Garriott made significant contributions to the gaming industry through his Ultima series. I enjoyed his Ultima series greatly.

However, I'm not sure if he's still relevant to the current gaming scene. His last game was the mess on Tabula Rasa and his tussle with NCSoft. Surely GDC could get someone more relevant for the keynote speech.

@Jade Effect Maybe he was the cheaper option.

@Jade Effect I agree. If Garriot was hosting a panel about how cool it was to be one of the first game developers on graphic computers, then it would be interesting to hear his story (or again if you heard it before).

But today, he really can only provide a look-back on what not to do. And that is if he actually has the ability to see his own role and not just blame everyone around him.

I am still annoyed by TR. I remember watching his little dev interviews where he took on an air of "look how cool my ideas are" only to find most of what he talked about non-existant in the game and then, after launch, backing out of responsibility of the crap that was created.

LMAO at the newt Gingrich comment, that about nails it hehe.

I almost think Garriot is afraid to try anymore. If all he does is "social" games and browser games, then his light has faded in the game industry.

This makes perfect sense if his speech is about what NOT to do.

Just because he does not play or develop these types of game anymore, does not mean he has nothing interesting or insightful to say about them...... If he will or not remains to be seen...
