I was actively saving up money to buy an Xbox just for this.
The cancellation was a freaking dagger through my heart.

You and me both brother. You and me both. I already had an Xbox though, but still, the cancellation crushed me.

I totally agree. Its funny because microsoft had
MYTHICA, this one, and Vanguard: Saga of Heroes and they dropped THEM ALL.
Maybe you could cover Mythica next, because i actually cried when that got cancelled.

That's exactly what I was thinking... The features and all that seem similar to what devCat are trying to do with Mabinogi... well aside the fact this was on console rather than PC

Consoles are what games evolved from... not what they should be evolving towards.

I know my opinion on this is an outlier and not shared by very many, nevermind the majority, but the mouse+keyboard is vastly superior to any console controller I've ever seen or used AND PCs are vastly more powerful and versatile than 5 consoles combined.

Please note: PC > console in power is a "Fact" not an opinion
and Keyboard+mouse more versatile than console contoller is a "Fact" not an opinion.

The industry focus on consoles rather than PCs is simply driven by the lowest common denominators... more money + less informed player base = satisfaction of greed for game developers. (and yes, if you were paying attention there I just called console gamers dummies... hey, if the dunce cap fits...)

Developing games for PC requires more resources (both time and money) and greater quality. Added to the fact that fewer folks maintain high end comps and so you have a smaller base you're selling to, and it's clear why many companies take the smarter business decision to develop for the console community instead, who demand far less from their games, spend money on them more frequently, and are generally too dumb to realize they are being gypped.

Do I want to see an MMO for consoles? No... I'd rather see the gaming community come to it's collective senses and demand higher quality games... you know... on PCs.

Oh... and get off my lawn you damn kids!

@ArcherAvatar

what you say is mostly true but you cant deny the fact that playing mario or street fighter on a mouse keyboard combo sucks, and using a controller of some type is just more suited for certain games.

I'm lost for a viable rebuttal because the arrogance and blindness of your commentary speaks for itself. What is there to point out that isn't plainly evident to anyone else?

Dust 514 is a PS3 exclusive. I guess you wrote this before that was announced, or you simply missed that fact altogether. Either way, I'm correcting you because I can. It also makes me feel smarter, and I need that, really.

"Xbox Live is inching toward legitimate MMO territory with games like Dust 514"

About that...

While the 360 eventually did get a version of FFXI (which is a game by a company with a lot of weight to throw around to get their way), it seems like Microsoft is still having some serious issues courting MMOs onto their consoles.

I was and still am a huge fan of Level 5. It's sad that nothing ever came of this simply because they really do create some amazing stuff.

SE got lucky with FFXI, but the main reason FFXIV and most other MMO aren't being considered for XBL is because M$ is requiring that to play an MMO one must have a paid gold account, instead of Silver as FFXI was able to squeeze by with. Plus they also want a cut of the monthly fee.

M$ needs to be more lenient than that, cause the avg consumer is not going to agree to such ridiculous fees. Having to pay for XBL Gold, plus the MMO sub is just too much...

The only reason the Xbox 360 got Final Fantasy 11 was Microsoft was desperate and trying to claw their way into the Japanese market. Their console have not performed well at all compared to the homegrown Sony and Nintendo in Japan, despite "big hitters" like Blue Dragon being hyped as one of its first titles, hyped more by the team behind the game being the same people behind Chrono Trigger.

"Level 5 president Akihiro Hino admitted that TFLO was essentially finished at that point"

Now this is what I don't get then. If a game is this far along, and Level 5 being quite successful now, why not reopen development on the title and launch it as another F2P MMO, or at least contract in one of the bazillion F2P devs in the Eastern countries to finish or just host it on their servers.

Sure something could fall into the vien of not having the rights to a particular feature or whatever that could hold up development, and this goes for many other titles where devs have said they can't just re-release said title because of previous contracts with a certain product or advertisements within the game that they no longer have.

It doesn't sound like it would be that hard to go in there and change it to something generic or remove it entirely to get around those ended contractual roadblocks.

Still looks like an amazing game and I too bought an XBox back in the day just for this game, then it got cancelled and I was like damn and then sold the XBox...lol

@Khalus It's sad to think of how many finished or mostly-finished games get their plug pulled, and then all those art assets and code gets essentially flushed down the tubes and lost. I don't understand why such remains aren't sold to other companies who could maybe salvage concepts and systems, so that all that hard work wasn't gone to waste.

Man... I wanted to play this game so bad, but ended up getting FFXI. It's too bad that these companies rush the devs all the time. I'm sure many of the games that failed would have actually succeeded if it weren't for the rush.

It's funny you mention Xbox Live and Dust 514, is that they already announced that Dust 514 is PS3 Exclusive, and there was even an article on here about it.

And the biggest reasons why Microsoft's console will never see a true MMO is because they have a near-draconian lock upon their system and updates. You release an MMO on it, and Microsoft will most likely try and make you pay for every content update for the game, plus expansions.
That's why Team Fortress 2 on the 360 is the basic version from release.
That's why CO or AoC was never released upon it.
And that's why Dust 514 isn't on there.

EVERY single mmo that has had to shut down and ALL that currently have less than 250k subscribers is because of one very simple, yet very doable thing...

NO PROMOTION WHATSOEVER!!!!

Current and former mmos continue to ONLY promote to current mmo gamers and pc/console games, THATS IT. WOW has 11-12 million subs because they CONTINUE to promote their game to non-gamers and gamers that dont play mmos.

Devs of todays mmos promote online on mmo and gaming websites 99% of the time, with a FEW commercials put out on TV for bigger budget games during their first 2 months of release. THATS IT.

Sad, isnt it? That ALL games that have closed up shop could be THRIVING right now if they actually had a promotion team with common sense.

Another sad aspect, that many many many devs seem to forget, is that THERE ARE MILLIONS of gamers that have computers that not only dont play certain mmos or dont know all the main titles... THEY DONT EVEN KNOW THAT MMORPGS EXIST!!!!

Yup, its fact. There are easily over 200million people 18-60 with computers that dont even know what an mmo is! On top of that add another 300 million or so GAMERS that have computers but play mostly console games and cant even name more than 1-2 mmos. Or that think all mmos are like wow or eq2

There is MASSIVE potential for ALL mmos to easily have 500k+ players, and i mean PAYING customers, not cheapo people that only play f2p games.

AND, all the numbers from above are excluding the millions of people with computers in ASIA!!!

So devs, WAKE THE FRACK UP, spend some damn money and PROMOTE!!!!

Lastly,. these devs need to predominantly promote to NON-gamers and gamers that dont play mmos. The reason being is that current mmo devs ONLY PROMOTE TO CURRENT and former mmo players!! Which is ridiculous. How can you expect an mmo to thrive when your sole market is players that would have to leave their current mmo game or split their time between games? Devs promote to the same pool of 25million gamers(give or take a few mill) and A LOT of these players are flip-flopping, spoiled, jaded, incredibly biased and bitter people that will jump on the nest shiny bandwagon, only to rush to level cap, complain about no content and then move to another game.

We need to promote to new blood - people that will actually APPRECIATE what mmorpgs and how incredibly CHEAP $15/mo is for the massive content you get over a lifetime.

WAKE UP DEVS - if you dont promote correctly now, soon all mmos will be have their whiney vocal minority become the MAJORITY like some games have now, and the games WILL DIE because of these jaded morons.
