Digital downloads and free-to-play MMORPGs are a match made in heaven, and so it's only natural that the largest purveyor of the former is teaming up with several of the latter to embed both movements further into the collective gaming psyche. Steam is now offering F2P MMOs as part of its on-demand gaming service, and titles as diverse as Global Agenda, Forsaken World, and Spiral Knights are joining the party.
So what, right? These games have always been free to download from their respective websites, haven't they? Well, yes, but Steam is offering exclusive in-game items (beginning tomorrow with Spiral Knights), and of course there's the ever-present achievement collection to consider. Boot up your Steam client and click the giant free-to-play banner, or head to the service's official website for more details.

In my humble opinion, this is a great move. One of the big deterrents to trying out many of the F2P games is downloading whatever installer they're using and then waiting forever for it to incrementally update and patch. The other big one is creating an account for reach service...I'm not sure yet whether my Steam account will link in or if I'll still need to do that.
The only potential problem is that Steam and Valve could become like Kindle and Amazon at some point down the road -- a huge, great online store, but one that the company has complete control over and uses to either keep profits of other publishers/creators down, or else keep out competition altogether. I haven't heard anything to suggest Steam/Valve moving in that direction yet, however.

Eh, Steam has been offering Global Agenda since its release I believe, so technically Global Agenda has "been at the party" for a while now, with Forsaken World and Spiral Knights arriving a little late

Yeah, was about to mention that. Though to be fair GA DID start out as P2P. Sorta kinda. If you looked at it sideways.
Still, it's a good move by Steam. They're all great games. Here's hoping they include more of the good F2P games in the future. APB:R, and/or the Turbine MMOs maybe? *nudgenudge*

Honestly, this makes me want to try out the games even more. The downloads are there at my finger tips, I can use my steam account for access where needed, and it's just that much easier on me when the mood strikes my fancy.
I also never knew of Spiral Knights till now. Very fun game, but if Three Ring thinks I'm going to get into another Fatigue System game, they can blow me. I hope other developers take advantage of Steam to show off their products, though. It just makes it that much easier for them to advertise.

This is a good move, in my opinion! Just imagine how many players out there, who visit Steam everyday and don't play mmorpgs.....and then they see the "Free To Play" banner. A little thing like that, can do something great!

I'll care when MMOs are on Onlive and I can play MMOs that look awesome on even the crappiest computer.

My understanding is you can now use cash in your steam wallet to buy things in these games cash shops, a pretty large thing for a lot of these games, it will do them wonders though I'm sure

Just when I thought Valve couldn't make me love Steam anymore than I already do, they pull this.
I think I'm in love.

Best move they could make in my opinion. If Turbine were to hop on board too it would be even better.

With an existing relationship with Funcom, we can hopefully expect to see AoC on there this summer once unrated launches.
