PS3 only killed this game. Other than interaction with EVE players the big appeal was cross-console play.

@halfcaptain - Cross-console play was promoted by CCP for two years for Dust 514. They're the ones who hyped it up. The coolest part of the equation is gone.

Now CCP is basically releasing another MAG and crossing their fingers it will catch on (unlike MAG).

@HokieKC

yeah, that's true. i can say though that i didn't really expect it to happen like that. It'd take some serious cheddar to get sony and microsoft to play nice. cheddar i don't think CCP can spare.

btw, mag wasn't as awful as you think, but i'm definitely hoping dust is much, much better.

@halfcaptain - MAG allows PS3 users to play with 256 people online, is PS3 only, and only sold a little over a million copies (which is horrid for any console FPS). The number of people who actually play it has been on a steady decline for a good year now.

CCP obviously didn't learn from MAG's experiment. And MAG was development by an experienced FPS developer not some rookie outfit.

Money obviously talks since CCP abandoned their cross-console goal, promoted for two years, with no evidence the game ever ran cross-console. Trion Worlds at E3 showed Defiance running on PS3, Xbox 360 AND PC simultaneously. That's called walking the talk CCP not 'show me the money!'.

Going PS3 only killed any interest I had in Dust 514 (granted, my interest wasn't very high to begin with).

The Eve Community was built up by PC gamers, for PC gamers. Why on Earth, would CCP go and do a stupid thing like making a spinoff (which runs side-by-side with the parent game), a console (PS3) only title, and leave the PC players out in the cold?

Not to mention, the inherent security risk by launching ANY title on the PS3 platform after recent hacking intrusions to the Playstation Network. As of yet, the Xbox Live network is still as secure as it's ever been.

In short (tl;dr): CCP screwed the pooch, and this game will never achieve the same popularity status as it's parent game.

@Meurik

Read about CCP's decision to go exclusive pl0x. By the way, PSN's security issues will most def. be ironed out by DUST's launch. You know, safest airline to fly with and all that.

CCP didn't screw anything. 360 couldn't and wouldn't of happened for a variety of reasons. and love it or hate it, the PS3 is the most viable console candidate. I'm with you on the PC note though. That'd be nice.

PC players will still have plenty of interaction with DUST. Just because you won't pull the trigger on the ground doesn't mean you're going to be left in the cold.

where do i sign up for a preorder directly with ccp in hopes of them upgrading the graphics of eve, making the development of this game faster, and maybe helping to fund other ideas.

Well, once the juvenile crowd of the PS3 will abandon Dust to itself (pun intended) they'll probably be allowed to do what they want with the game.

The "we don't want to cannibalize our own playerbase" is bullshit. I'd play Dust as my ongoing mmo commitment, while I dislike Eve's slow gameplay, which never hooked me up.

In fact.. the fun of actually fighting for a specific purpose, rather than just grinding people lobby after lobby for the sake of doing just that... well is absolutely brilliant and exciting.

Let's just hope that by failing, it won't drag the concept to the grave with itself, 'cause on PC this would have probably marked a milestone on gaming.

@ everyone above this comment:

Same old nonsense from the forum hounds. The PS3 only decision isn't a 'mistake,' and it's been discussed (and explained) at great lengths in the other DUST posts. Do 10 minutes of reading, then form an opinion worth reading!

Your argument is nullified by using the word "plox".

By 'an opinion worth reading' ...You mean, form an opinion that matches yours?

Debating the merits of the benefits of a PS3 exclusive to CCP and the EVE playerbase is great. Good for them, and good for you.

I play FPSes on my PC, which I upgrade frequently, and enjoy using a keyboard+mouse combination which I'm incredibly comfortable with. I enjoy the EVE universe's fiction and some of it's mechanics, even if I'm eventually driven away by the sociopaths. I was very excited about the news of Dust, it's possibilities - finally a way for me to contribute meaningfully to my friends' corp.

But it's exclusive to the PS3, not the PC. Which means, unless it does appear on the PC (unlikely, for reasons amply discussed above) I won't be playing it. So. To ME, it's a bad idea, and one that will cost them my patronage. Also, even after reading the intense and extensive discussions on the value of consoles versus PC, while I'd admit that the points in favour of a console release are valid benefits, I'm not convinced of their weighting. The counter-points are equally valid, and resonate more strongly with me.

Examples:
Eg: PC sales outnumbered by console sales for multi-platform releases? Yeah, it's easier to pirate on the PC, so number of people playing isn't represented, not to mention that most console/PC releases are utter dog shit, half-assed ports on the PC, so anyone with both would do very well to go the console version.
Eg: It's opening up a new market and not cannibalizing the PC market? I'd argue just as validly that it's not the platform that opens up the market as much as it is the genre. Take TF2 as an example. Sure the release dates are different, but the obstacles which truly squelched the PS3 playerbase are still valid obstacles for Dust - we just have to hope they'll be handled better.)

I'm not alone; the number of down-rated 'PS3 = Bad!' posts is more indicative of the opinions of EVE enthusiasts, rather than FPS enthusiasts... who are less likely to be reading a MMO blog's EVE posts.

Big deal. So CCP went with PS3. People are acting like the sky is falling. Guess what? It isn't. I'm looking forward to Dust514 - and it's still a year away.

@EdmundDante That's the MMO playerbase for you. Nothing but fucking complaining. I mean, I am appalled by how stupidly SURPRISED everyone is that this game would be a PS3 exclusive.

I think some posters here at Massively should exercise some self-restraint in expressing their opinions. DUST as a PS3 only title won't kill the game, or lead to the demise of EVE, or CCP, or even bring about the end of the world, as has been predicted. CCP did not make their decision flippantly. Many here have already pointed this fact out and provided links so that we can read and understand their thought processes. CCP's reasons are, well, reasonable. If your disappointed, then say, "I'm disappointed," and don't buy or play the game when it's released, but do not fault CCP for being reasonable. As far as developers go, they are one of the few that is truly innovating and pushing the genre forward.
