I have a new name for this game.

"The seventh Rift"

Where aliens are dropped dynamically from space! Hope its not extremely low cap as Rifts's servers, they were pretty stable, but scarce on players :). Shooter games do require very very low ping.

"Unlike combat in previous MMO shooters such as Tabula Rasa and PlanetSide, combat here is very much skill-based and doesn't rely on the roll of invisible dice to determine hits, misses, and damage."

PlanetSide combat is 100% skill based with no dice rolls of any kind. Don't make comments about a game that you obviously know absolutely nothing about.

@raykor

Please see my comment below. The article could have been worded more clearly, I admit, but the point being made in the interview was that Defiance plays more like other console shooters than Planetside does, what with the inclusion of headshots, melee attacks and the like.

Whoever wrote this article is an idiot. Planetside doesn't even have a dice or roll system. It's 100% aim at the target and shoot, no criticals or missing unless you actually can't aim. Skill like other fps games.

@Noyjitat

If you'll please note, one of the things I mention in the article is that Defiance -- decidedly unlike Planetside -- includes the capability of headshots. Planetside was also one of the shooters (alongside Tabula Rasa) called out by name within the audio of the interview. I assure you I've played Planetside and know quite well how it plays.

@Noyjitat

And the very next sentence, "Your aiming ability will be your best friend, as it alone determines your combat potency, and yes, headshots do count."

As I said, that was the point being made in the presentation when contrasting Defiance with Planetside. The article could have been worded better, I admit, but that was what I (and the presenter in the audio) was trying to get across.

Someone please tell Hollywood to get the Hell out of our games. I don't mind tie-ins but don't try to sell me story as if it were the primary draw of the game.

I can't see these third-party media tie-ins being a good thing. When you have to lock down your content for the writers of a television show, what happens to the continued iteration of game mechanics?

I think that MMO has come to mean 'lots of suckers giving me money' to these people.
