OOOO skill based aiming

Ok I am very interested in this now.
If this game is as polished as Rift and if it is fun I will be all over it.

I'm not really interested in the TV series, but the game sounds like it might be kind of awesome (MMO set in San Francisco? I'll be right over!).

> there will be no cross-platform play

This is so because on XBOX it was proved that PC players pwn console players due to the pointing device (mouse vs. gamepad).

I'm totally uninterested in this title and together with RIFT, Trion disappoints me much, now.

Yup...but I'm sure the Trion Holiday Bonus checks will perk them right up.

Are you sure about the no cross-platform play? IGN yesterday stated they saw the same gaming being played on three platforms.

Game sounds a lot of fun either way. Hopefully the show is decent.

@HokieKC - Also, it sounds like a third person shooter not MMOFPS. Which one is it?

Three platforms simultaneously?

@pcgneurotic - Yes, that was apparently shown yesterday.

Need more specifics, because that could easily be three platforms turned on, next to each other, playing simultaneously on their different servers.

@HokieKC

To clarify, the dev said that, in development, PC, PS3, and 360 all run on the same server and the players on each platform can play together. However, he said that, come launch, there will not be cross-platform support. PS3, 360, and PC versions of the game will all run on different servers and players on the different platforms will not be able to play with one another. I hope this clears things up.

PS: The above was the author of this article. Massively's account system just hates me.

@(Unverified) - OK thanks. They sure made that confusing especially demoing the game yesterday on multiplatforms simultaneously.

I guess that shows it's the same exact version of the game which will make patching easy.

So, pretty much a simple shooter.

I really can't see a storyline where the TV's main characters go to San Fran. It's possible, but in the interest of simplicity, this would complicate writing/filming a weekly TV show. (Now that I think of it, maybe this shoulda been monthly or every 2 weeks?)

I also can't envision strong PvP elements here; it's an "us vs. them" sorta thing, with "them" being aliens. Perhaps there are players playing the aliens? No info given to that. There may be PvP-lite elements, like certain instances or maybe a story will unlock FFA (alien spores make people see their worst nightmares?).

I am interested in this experiment, although similar TV/games have been done before, but not to this extent for a FPS MMO. (I think I recall a website with info and possible voting in the past as being close?)

Of course, the main question is, "Is the gameplay any good?" I don't watch SyFy and I am more a gamer at heart.

Much of the article was a bit "pie-in-the-sky" aspirations, such as seeing/interacting with players that make a name for themselves on the TV show. Honestly, I feel we are going to mostly see news reports on TV and maybe a radio-transmitter link. Possibly, if both St. Louis and San Fran get in touch, we exchange supplies (like, that boss fight you mentioned where we get gear, maybe ship the extras to St. Louis?).

I could be wrong, but I see ALL sorts of shortcuts that could be done here that others have high expectations of in relation to the TV/game connection. And really, maybe even SyFy have such goals, but I can easily see them dashed in the effort to film/produce an episode in a timely fashion.

Just a small point, but Planet Side is/was based on player skill not based on random rolls or character level. Just sayin is all.

@Unit 23

Came here to say this exact thing.

It was one of PlanetSide's better features (that anyone could go toe-to-toe with anyone else, regardless of level).

@Gaff

and

@Unit 23

I had to come in here and put a correction on that claim as well. Planetside was THE FPS MMO shooter that was all based on skill with aiming. There were no rolls. He should have said "Not unlike...." when referring to Planetside.

"What makes Defiance truly unique among shooters is its tie-in with the Syfy Defiance TV series"
So what happens if and when the tv show has poor ratings and gets canned for some reason or runs out of ideas does Defeiance go back to being a non unique run of the mill shooter?

@alucard3000

but then it'll be a shooter that you can play with thousands of players in an open, persistent world.
Not that run-of-the-mill, unless you know of a mass of MMOFPS that exist that I'm not aware of?

I can see this going all sorts of bad.

"In our next episode, Ryan goes to San Francisco and takes out a major terraformer with the assistance of luvs2spooge and his group We Pwnz Ur Momz..."
