Since 1998, Belarus-based Wargaming.net has developed and shipped 13 games including the Massive Assault series, Order of War, and most recently, World of Tanks. According to a new press release, the dev team is aiming to replicate WoT's success with a new free-to-play title called World of Warplanes.
Aviation is the big draw, of course, and Wargaming.net indicates that the title will feature aircraft and scenarios dating from the 1930s through the 1950s (a watershed period in aviation history that saw rapid technological advances spurred on by World War II and the Korean conflict).
Details on the game are a bit light at this point, but we're expecting (and hoping for) something similar to World of Tanks in terms of a balance between simulation and traditional MMO gameplay. We'll be bringing you more on World of Warplanes throughout its development process.

Great news, I have been expecting for a REAL MMO Aircombat simulation.

A lobby-based shooter is a "real MMO" how, exactly? Don't get me wrong, I'm far more excited for this than for WoT, but it's not really an MMO at all, and, if the precedent stands, why not just cover pretty every online game that features a mild progression system.
Multiplayer yes, and I'm all for it.
MMO? Not really.

By "Real" I wasn't only talking about the MMO experience, I was also talking about simulation; because I have seen some Air combat games which aren't exactly simulations. For example, HIS from Gamescampus is a good game, but it doesn't feel like if you were flying a real plane, it feels like if you were flying a ultra advanced airship which has infinite bullets and is able to fly against the rules of physics.

I thought there were still some similar games still going on being hosted?
But that was awhile back (before '98). Anyway, nice to see a new contender in this field!

I enjoy WoT, and if they can pull of an effective flight combat simulator then I am there. Time to dust off my joystick.

I like World of Tanks, it has issues but in general its a decent game.
World of Warplanes could be equaly good...but that acronym/anacronym is really not a good identifier to have.

@FrostPaw, so perhaps WoP(planes) would be better?

Now I will have something very interesting to counter the "wow is awesome", "wow clone" and "go play wow then" comments.
Thank you for being awesome, Wargaming :3

Looking forward to this. Ever since I played WoT, I've wanted a WWII fighter equivalent. Unfortunately the only thing I found was Heroes of the Sky, which wasn't what I was looking for : /

Looks like another not-actually-an-mmo-but-more-like-an-online-multiplayer-wargame. That's really tiring to say in an attempt to clarify that it's not an MMO. Really wish the MMO moniker would stop getting abused.

@Silverel I created an account just to tell you that a MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER ONLINE ROLE PLAYING GAME does NOT mean pay to play nor does it infer that you will all be playing on the same server. Ergo this genre includes any game that is STRICTLY online play ONLY, has multiplayer ONLY and is a ROLE PLAYING (go google roleplaying game if you want the inferred definition) GAME.
You think of World of Warcraft, Star Wars Galaxies, Guild Wars, ETC. ETC. as the standard of MMORPG's you are not incorrect. However there are many other games that fit this genre other than your fantasy and/or Sci-fi RPG's. World of Tanks and World of Warplanes are just two in a much larger ocean.
Now I think and most would probably agree that they need to coin a new genre for these kinds of games. I suggest SWRPG Strategic Warfare Role Playing Game.

Sounds pretty awesome. Granted odds are that the Russian planes will be OP with the German planes/jets a distant 3rd if WoT is indicative of the game balance. That being the likely case it'll still be loads of fun so can't wait.
And calling a World of Warships by Wargaming.net in about 2 years (would be freaking awesome too) :)

There has been one out there for a long time and I bet you it is more of a sim than this game will be.
Called BattleGround Europe

Interesting, as I heard just yesterday that Gaijin Entertainment is developing 'World of Planes' that also sounds exactly like a World of Tanks but in the air. Let the confusion begin :D
