I've been giving Eden Eternal a go too. I havent gotten as far as Matt has, but I am really enjoying the class system so far. Its actually one of the more fun anime inspired F2P games out there.

It's not a bad game, but for some reason that style of UI, which a lot of MMOs of that genre seem to use annoys the crap out of me, so much so that I can't play it =.=

Great article. I've been playing for a few days and the anime was a bit off-putting at first, but the cel shading makes up for it.

The combat is good, but it's still the same click-to-target button-rotation game, only dumbed down with stationary animations and no facing restrictions.

I also find the maps to be dumbed down to simplicity. You can't jump off ledges or swim in water. The 'social' aspect of this game feels more like collective achievement grinding than sandbox community.

It's refreshing. I'm having fun with the game, but no MMO with DIKU-style combat will ever grab my interest for very long these days.

@(Unverified) Yeah, I also don't get how the reviewer never saw anyone else -- the game is packed at all hours. Maybe he was on one of the newer server channels that wasn't as populated -- the first few channels Aquamarine server are always active.

You know, I am a little divided as well with the "Outfit" system, but a thing to note is that helmet armor does show up on your toon, and also changes depending on the class.

As a cleric I have one of those commonly-seen box-like hats, but if I switch to Bard, that same hat becomes some large fancy ensemble with a big feather stuck in it. The hats appearance even changes with the outfit, so Outfit 1 and Outfit 3 of the warrior, with the same helmet, won't have the same appearance.
So, its more than possible that helmet models could become the unique parts of the set.

What I do like best about this, is that while its true my armor doesn't change the looks, i don't have to worry about the clown get-up effect. The outfits themselves are rather great looking too, and as mentioned the dye system will help alleviate it.
And of course, one of those "coming soon" options are more than likely to be cosmetic items.

the population is nothing near empty. im in the beta right now. And you need to try a lot of those asian mmo before doing another review because you bash on many "regular" to asian mmo things. this is not a western "wow'ish" mmo... this game is a huge evolution toward Gran Fantasia which was a good game already. the controls are better, the quests system is a quests system, whatever they could add, people would still whine. I like the class system a lot, i hope this game get the hype it derserve.

"Anime style is very hit-or-miss."

Ehh.. Well you either like it or you dont like it. its not really a con.

"Tooltips can be a bit convoluted."

Not really, its missing something only. that is if its a light/cloth or heavy armor.

"Population seems low right now (though it is only closed beta)."
NO.. first server has TONS of people.

"Quests are generic and can get old very quickly."
Its a asian game. do you really expect wow style quests?

@Viiral Maybe you should specify when you use the term "asian." I mean, that could mean a lot of different areas. You could mean Korean, Chinese, Iranian.....using "Asian" as a descriptive term is ignoring all of the different styles and genres that come from that area.

In fact, here is a list of Asian countries. Which one were you implying? Which style? Do they all have the same style, music, movies or cultures?

Damn Beau. You and everyone else knew what he meant and he was mearly sticking up for the game. Your response is petty and distracting. You don't like the fact that he made valid points. It's as simple as that. Grow up, or find another job already. Every other writer here is decent, what's your problem? You are one of the biggest stereotypers here, and yet you call someone out on using a valid description. What does "Western" mean? What does "Role" mean? What is a "Game"? What is "Art"? Yeah, whatever man, that's what I thought.

@LeStryfe79 While i have nothing against the author in particular, i would agree to some extent. Beau, you are splucking at straws at this point. He said Asian, and you know what he meant. This politically correct world has spent the last 20 years telling us "oriental" is now offensive unless you are talking about dinner ..so "Asian" it is. "Asian style MMO" is very descriptive. We all know exactly what that means or at least what it implies. Now you want more descriptive terms? When was the last Iranian MMO you played? I mean, really.

Indeed, Racism, as in all things is based on intent. How can you pull racist intent from their comments? There is a SERIOUS difference between games built in the west and east. (honestly, this game is the first asian game I thought had enough polish to actually play.) Asian Game has a REAL description behind it. If there was a bunch of game companies that all began with the letter L that made bad games, we'd call them L games. If Miami, FL made a bunch of junky F2P games we'd call them Miami Games.

Maybe I was just on the wrong server or the wrong channel. Again, this was just MY experience, and your mileage may vary.

Tried it, then uninstalled it. Too generic, felt like I'm playing the same game I've played many times before.

I found it refreshing. One thing to note with the group dungeons is that they come in two flavors, 3 man and 5 man. The 3 man are small affairs that tend to be complete within 15 minutes tops if not shorter. The 5 man dungeons are larger sprawling places with lots of groups of mobs strewn about and can have a variety of types in them. All the dungeons have an associated quest with them, usually just to kill 1 or 2 bosses.

Some fortification scrolls you receive later can only be used on certain levels of gear and a few of them seem to be able to safely enhance items past +4.

The server I have been on (emerald) and the channel I am on (3) seem to be very busy at all levels throughout the day and they have added an additional server and doubled the channels on each server.

This is a great game for a casual player that maybe plays with a few friends and doesn't need a gigantic vast world. All the major quest hubs in each area have a port (which costs a few coins per use) back to the 'main city' Azen where the bank and vendors on.

One thing of note is the relationship system. If you play with your spouse/significant other or just a friend you can enter a 'relationship' with them in game that grants you bonus class xp (cp) and character xp If you are both on and in the same area. It also allows you to earn 'love coins' that can be traded in for other bonuses and the mini map icon of your 'love' will be a heart instead of the standard dot.

You can change classes 'on the fly' and even in dungeons and each tier of armor is equipped on your class at all times (cloth, light and heavy). Your hot bars are saved to each class too, so as soon as you hit the transform button your hotbars, armor and buttons switch. You then only need to swap out your weapons/shield and you are good to go.

Quests for Alpaca mounts are gained at character level 30 and you get a small dog pet early on that fetches all item drops. The dog can eventually be fed with pet food to turn it into a true combat pet. Hunters also get their own sabertooth tiger type pet as a class feature.

Good game if you don't mind the art style, seems to be rather bug free.

I'm thinking you didn't see many players due to having the character draw option turned down. There are a ton of players on each server from what I've see and the channels are fairly populated.

Mobs will only respawn if the number of them in the area is brought down to it's minimum from what I've seen. So there must have been other players killing mobs fairly close to you.

The buff/healing issue was that you didn't have the target option enabled. Which allows you to use beneficial spells on yourself if you don't have an ally targeted.

The quests do get pretty grindy as you level past 20. They all have a purpose and lead into the main storyline if you read them all. All of them leading you to that zone's dungeon as well.

I find Eden Eternal's style to be well done as well. I typically don't like anime-style games but with all the effects up this game just looks gorgeous.

The only problem I've had so far is leveling seperate classes. You can easily level a level 1 cleric in a level 25 area if your base level is 25. The main pain is leveling your general skills all the way up. You end up using a ton of gold to bring one ability up to your current base level. Leaving you with only one or 2 of that class' general abilities to level with.

Indeed. If they added more quests than kill quests then questing would be a lot better of an experience.
