Thanks to our friends at Darth Hater, Massively has learned that the highly anticipated MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic will be sold as a direct download only through Electronic Arts itself. In an interview with CEO John Riccitiello, the Wall Street Journal uncovered news of EA's new service, one it's calling Origin. This service will provide customers with a download service for all EA games, including the Battlefield games, the Need For Speed games, and the aforementioned Star Wars: The Old Republic.
Origin is to act as a social network hub as well as a place to track all your EA game purchases, explained Riccitiello to the Wall Street Journal. This functionality will be available to all users even if they did not purchase the game directly from Origin. However, Riccitiello clarified that Star Wars: The Old Republic will still be purchasable in box form via retailers; only the digital download itself will be exclusive to Origin. Presumably, other all-digital services such as Direct2Drive and Steam will not carry the game.
The full article from the Wall Street Journal is available with a subscription to the newspaper's website.
[Update: Stephen Reid posted to the official SWTOR forums: "However, even though you'll only be able to buy and download The Old Republic digitally via Origin, you will still be able to buy a retail, boxed copy of the game from your favorite retailer (and that includes online retailers who'll ship the box to you). BioWare and EA know the value many gamers place on a cool boxed product... and we're producing a cool boxed product. (Or maybe I should say 'boxed products'.)"]

This is a huge mistake, they've already missed the boat on a service like Steam by several years.

No Steam may be a dealbreaker for me. SWTOR was already on thin ice for me because of its features, and because of EA's bungling of Warhammer Online.

The whole thing is some giant big wigs Idea of lets try and compete with steam but JUST with EA products......................................................................... Lame sir lame. Let me use Steam and my 102 games i have on it because of crazy sales and good quality service. So I can play SWTOR bad enough not all the MMO's I want to play are not on Steam. Like Earthrise IE waiting till Territory Wars.

ORIGIN! Wow, thats some nerve they have! Naming some stupid social network after the single greatest game studio they bought and destroyed, Origin-We create(d) worlds! The sheer audacity!
Social network... I don't like the sound of that at all.

Thats cool, this game is worth getting up and going to the store to buy; And to add they plan on producing a cool boxed product, forget digital download.

@alinos
I have a few EA games that have nothing to do with that origin system. I'm sure there will be an option to install the game and play it online without even connecting to the origin system. I could use EVE as an example (even though it's not an EA game); I can buy EVE through steam and then bypass that by downloading it directly from the website, totally ignoring steam service. There will be a way to get around, even if you have to modify some files.

Who gives a rats ass how you have to download/patch the game... Another program on my hard drive!111?1?!?1? People like to whine about the most stupid shit, you won't have to use the "social network" if you don't want to. It's probably just going to be a way to communicate with people in game when you are offline, which is becoming more and more of a staple for new mmos coming out now anyway. Remember, biowares name is all over this product. They know the success of this game is based upon a smooth launch, so logically this new download service will work better.
