Thanks to our friends at Darth Hater, Massively has learned that the highly anticipated MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic will be sold as a direct download only through Electronic Arts itself. In an interview with CEO John Riccitiello, the Wall Street Journal uncovered news of EA's new service, one it's calling Origin. This service will provide customers with a download service for all EA games, including the Battlefield games, the Need For Speed games, and the aforementioned Star Wars: The Old Republic.
Origin is to act as a social network hub as well as a place to track all your EA game purchases, explained Riccitiello to the Wall Street Journal. This functionality will be available to all users even if they did not purchase the game directly from Origin. However, Riccitiello clarified that Star Wars: The Old Republic will still be purchasable in box form via retailers; only the digital download itself will be exclusive to Origin. Presumably, other all-digital services such as Direct2Drive and Steam will not carry the game.
The full article from the Wall Street Journal is available with a subscription to the newspaper's website.
[Update: Stephen Reid posted to the official SWTOR forums: "However, even though you'll only be able to buy and download The Old Republic digitally via Origin, you will still be able to buy a retail, boxed copy of the game from your favorite retailer (and that includes online retailers who'll ship the box to you). BioWare and EA know the value many gamers place on a cool boxed product... and we're producing a cool boxed product. (Or maybe I should say 'boxed products'.)"]

I can understand how EA may not need to farm out the distribution of the game since its so popular but I can't understand why they'd not want to use great services like D2D and Steam. EAs own client for digital downloads is terrible by comparison

So they can keep 100% instead of 70%.

Also keep in mind that this will be a new download platform and not EADM. I have faith that they've taken the lessons they learned with EADM and applied them to Origin to make it comparable to other Digital Distributors.

I think the point is making even more cash of the users, although EA has been slowly doing good recently so I dunno.
Right now, their their EADM (EA Download Manager), after you've bought a game, you can redownload it for 6 months then you'll have to pay an extra 5$ for an additional 2 years.
Hopefully they don't pull that shit on their new service.

You'd think after all the social site problems EA has had since trying to integrate them into BioWare and DICE games EA would have had a wake up call that they can't do it right at launch. Anyone that buys SWTOR via this EA store deserves what's going to happen to them.

Aw, no Steam? Darn. That means no cool Steam-exlcusive pre-order bonuses D:

And no hat in Team Fortress 2 for the pre-order! (Seriously, every damn game on Steam these days gets a TF2 hat for pre-ordering. It's a wonder they don't just give away TF2 free to all Steamers so more people will pre-order games on Steam for the hats.)

The mention of "social network hub" made me cringe. I don't want facebook in my damn game!!!!

Who needs another social network hub? And who would be uncool enough to hang out on EA's one? :D

i don't know how I feel about this. I'm extremely picky about my PC gaming habits and I'm hesitant to buy anything that's not on Steam. I'm weird like that.
I bought Eve twice. Once on disc, the second time on Steam. I'm planning on doing the same for Guild Wars too. I have the disc versions, but I'd love for the Steam versions to go on sale so I could just buy those.
I dunno, having to go to one place instead of two, three, etc to download all my games just makes me happy. I know it won't kill me to take 5 seconds out of my day to go to EA and download it, but I just prefer going to Steam.
Meh we'll see. Lately, I've been rethinking buying this game at all. I've played the beta, but the more I wait and the more games I play/see announced make me question if this game is really worth the money in my case.
Oh well, time will tell I guess.

@PrimeSynergy This might be a dealbreaker for me. I'm not downloading some asinine EA chat client just to play TOR if that's what they are thinking. They are about 5 years too late and while imitation is usually the highest form of flattery, this time it's just awkward and obvious.

Personally, I'd buy the digital version from the actual publisher before I bought it from Steam.

Unfortunately, what that means is that they have different *distribution* channels. In other words, you can buy it from different stores as box copies (heck, maybe even with store-specific preorder bonuses), but when you go home and install it, it'll probably force-load Origin onto your system in order to simply play the game.
No escape, and EA won't pass up a chance to have their software automatically installed on the hundreds of thousands or millions of systems in one product launch.

ZenJitsu has it absolutely right, I'd imagine. EA will force you to have their "Origin" service on your computer regardless of where you buy SWTOR.
