Holy crap really? This is like the most surprising thing I've ever read. I think Cryptic is in good hands. PWE makes good MMOs now. Curious to see if anything surprising comes from this.

Wow that was unexpected, oh well hope it goes well for them and the western f2p scene. PW has definitely got a "Asian grinder" stereotype to it, hopefully this will help their cause, not too sure though, never really been a fan of any of the games they've published!

Good luck PW & you F2P westerners!

Gene has likely been spinning in his grave ever since Cryptic aquired his IP. This is will make no difference. Just saying.

well, this settles all the doubts regarding STO's future.

going F2P, then adding a game-impacting-non-cosmetic cash shop with jacked up prices, and pretty much mandatory if you plan to play endgame...

"The main thing with PWE is that, yes you can spend RL$ to progress faster or get stronger quicker, but you don't HAVE to spend a dime"

That is the pure, unadulterated definition of "paying to win". You have been playing pay to win games(Most PWE games are this way), you've just clearly misunderstood what the term means.

I would still argue it's "pay to win" even if the items are also available ingame, since you are paying to fast track which has a distinct advantage over someone who doesn't pay. Either way though, I guess you're right to suggest this inbalance is countered by the degree of how much one can fast track themselves (ie. modestly) and that you can earn the equivelant ingame. I guess in this respect , one would feel less like a second class citizen...than say if they play a certain P2P game I play that has just introduced Sparkle Pony 2.0 to it's expensive cash shop with no chance of it dropping ingame. /shrug

@Zethe 'Getting to endgame faster' is not
'paying to win', because not everyone thinks getting to endgame as fast as possible is 'winning'. If anything, that just makes it faster for some people to run out of stuff to do ingame and then start complaining about it. Not everyone's goal in a game is to hit cap as soon as possible.

I don't get how the mentality of 'the -real- game doesn't start until level cap' can coexist with 'getting to level cap faster = winning the game'.

What has illegal services got to do with this conversation? My point is that he stated that pay to win does not exist while explaining to us the very definition of paying to win.

"@Zethe 'Getting to endgame faster' is not
'paying to win'"

I believe you're confused. I never said anything about "getting to the end game". At all, in any way, shape or form.

Be it leveling, items, buffs, bag slots or many other types of stuff. If you can pay real life money to have an advantage over someone else you are "paying to win".

Not all systems are bad, LOTRO has(Or had when i played it) a very nice f2p system. PWE games however are some of the worst games for paying to win.

"No, "paying to win" is all about paying for things that people who don't pay anything will never have access to"

I completely and utterly disagree.

If i can join a game(theoretically) and pay real life money to become instantly max level capped and in the best armor in game, so i can then go around stomping people in PVP or do the best raids, I've just paid to win.

@Zethe No you clearly dont understand what "pay to win" is.It is none of your concern or business how long I want to take to progress in a game and how much I am willing to spend unless it affects you personally for example in a PVP setting where you are the obvious underdog if you havnt spent money going against someone who spends alot of money on items that tilt the favor in their direction.I lol everytime I see people pissing and moaning and trying to equate paying to win to pve.

@Tempes Magus

Ok, a different example. In your mind:

"paying for things that people who don't pay anything will never have access to"

AOC, for example(as far as i know). Is having a F2P system where it will not allow some content to free players(dungeons, areas, ect), but you can purchase items such as armor, weapons.

So, By your own logic by subscribing to the game im paying to win because i will be able to access dungeons and areas that free players would not be able to.

However and again by your own logic, if i went to the cash shop and paid for all the best armor and weapons, i would not be paying to win.

....Really? Another:

LOTRO, for example is mostly hailed as being one of the best non "pay to win" pay to play games out there. But if i don't "pay" i can not do certan things a free player generally could, like quest certan areas, have more than one toon, rested EXP, Monster play(pvp), destiny points, mailslots ect, ect.

So, by your own definition...LOTRO is a Pay to win game?

Oh, and i'll just clarify i have no problems with either system, i currently hold two subs(EVE, WoW) and i've played both free and p2p games. And yes, i know they need to make money.

I simply disagree with your definition of the term Pay to Win.

Also, technically. Since i can buy vanity items in WOW like mounts and pets that aren't available in game, WOW must also be a pay to win game.

Clearly, it's not.

"I am not going to try to argue with you anymore because you're just contradicting yourself."

I've not contradicted myself once, You just seem to lack understanding. My last post was based on your definition of the term,
this was made clear.

I will also leave this, we have different opinions.

@(Unverified) You are so full of shit and you know it. PWE games are so pay for power it's insane. They're one of the worst free to play hosts on Earth.
Tell us all how much the average PWI player spends to get a mount up to maximum speed.
Or how much a BoI player needs to spend to get a fully functioning Zodiac pet to counter all the other Zodiac pets that dominate PVP.

PWE players often end up spending hundreds, or in some rare cases over a thousand dollars a month, on the awful cash shops. They are going to straight up ruin Cryptics games. That is, if Cryptic hadn't already done so.

PWE has the worst cash shops outside of whatever greed mongers are running Allods into the ground.

Cryptic is already a greedy horrid company, PWE will make it worse. A LOT worse.
