It's server merge time in Hyboria. Age of Conan's launcher indicates that the U.S. servers are offline for up to 24 hours while the American PvP shards (Cimmeria and Tyranny) are consolidated. Tomorrow will see the European servers undergo a similar process, with Crom, Hyrkania, and Ishtar merging into a single PvE mashup and Fury, Aquilonia, and Stygia joining forces as the remaining PvP shard.
Funcom has thrown up a server merge FAQ for your reading pleasure during the downtime, and in it you'll find details on everything from duplicate character names to duplicate guild names to the fate of guild-controlled battlekeeps. "Since build spots for battlekeeps are limited on each server, all build spots will be cleared and guilds will be reimbursed the resources for their battlekeep. This is to make sure that the guild gets the needed resources again and every guild gets the same chance," says the FAQ.
Read up on all the details at the official AoC forums.

That's...sudden. Was there any preamble to this or was it just announced out of the blue?
Also: does this mean there won't be any language-specific servers on the EU shards? That'll make it even more messy; already there were a lot of nationalities that aren't necessarily brilliant with English as it is, if there's an influx of people who are used to having native support in virtually every other game that's not great.

@Dril
Morrison talked with us about it last week. It's toward the end of this interview.

IMO they should have merged the NA PvE servers, too. I play on Wiccana, and it's a ghost town sub-80. I guess they expect enough new players when they go F2P to sustain two PvE servers, but as instanced as AoC is, I really don't see the point of more than one server of each type.

@Harley Dude
Tried AoC out this holiday weekend and Wicanna was nicely crowded for me and even Global chat reflected it.
They used to designate servers either "PvP", "PvE", "RP-PvE" or "RP-PvP" but Funcom announced it was doing away with that partly due to player size, and sticking with PvP and PvE, however they are starting their new "Bad Ass/Hardcore PvP" server (I forget the details), so that makes three choices and this seems like a move toward that.
I am also assuming f2p is going to bring in more players, even those that stay on the f2p plan, so I would guess that for NA, this would drive the number back to 4 servers and IMO, that's probably a good number for the influx of new players. I don't think more servers are needed than 2 PvE, 1 basic PvP and one "super PvP" one, but Funcom will decide then.

Better to have two servers with large populations than several ghosttowns.

Trying to figure this one out. I thought the game was already down to 4 servers in EU based on RP - PVE and PVP. Now down to 2 ? Who cares about RP sort of merge ?

F2P and now server mergers, if the white flag isn't waving, I don't know when you'd consider it.

Actually, not knowing the European side, I am surprised they had more servers than the North American side.
Damn, EU had a RP-PvE server? NA only has a RP-PvP one and judging from forum posts and other things, it was the more crowded of the two PvP servers (and of course, a bit more mature, even though you have only two choices for PvP).

@Space Cobra
Europe has quite some more servers than US:
- English: Crom (PvE), Fury (PvP), Hyrkania (RP-PvE), Aquilonia (RP-PvP)
- German: Mitra (PvE), Asgard (RP-PvP)
- French: Ishtar (PvE), Stygia (RP-PvP)
- Polish/Russian: Rothat (PvE), Two Eagles (PvP)
With the Merges it will be:
- English: Crom (PvE), Fury (PvP)*
- German: Mitra (PvE), Asgard (RP-PvP)
- Polish/Russian: Rothat (PvE), Two Eagles (PvP)
*Fury will have a big RP community though, so you could make it an unofficial RP-PvP server.

as soon as the new hybrid model begins they'll be needing all those servers again

Damn, I know articles here stated this around last Friday, but this re-reminded me:

"# Starting cross server tech - The merges next week are the start of a process whereby we will be moving the game to new 'cross-server' or 'single server' technology. This means that more players than ever before can play together on the same 'server' and that group activities will be able to be done across what were previously separate servers. This will be introduced in stages, starting with the merges this week, and ultimately the goal is that the only 'choice' as it were for world choice will be based on rule-set, so that all PVE players will play together, all PVPers will be together, and all the Blood and Glory population will be together (that is, within the same territory - there will still be the separation between data-centres i.e. the split between EU and US).
# Blood and Glory PVP server - This is a brand new PVP server type aimed at a more hardcore audience, it will most likely go live at the same time, or just after the release update for the free to play offer."
