This was always a cash grab by Interplay to make money off the backs of Bethesda bringing a series back from the dead to superstardom. I have no faith whatsoever in Interplay making any sort of decent game. Even their reputation as a classic great 90's game maker is only them publishing what others had done. From doing nothing good with a Star Trek license to trying to slip a technicality through the back door for a cash grab, Interplay is where games and game makers go to die now.

@(Unverified) Interplay started making Fallout 3 around the turn of the century, but ran into financial difficulties. as a result, they sold the rights to the fallout franchise to Bethesda, with the exception of an MMO. the deal states that they have/had until a certain date to show progress or release a Fallout MMO (not clear on the specifics). Its not a cash grab. its a studio that made some bad financial decisions pouring too many resources into a project they didn't have the resources for in the first place, because of a contractual obligation to "use it or lose it".

I don't know why every one is standing up for Bethesda on this one, Obviously Interplay made some bad decisions, but they are hardly the bad guys. a big part of their money troubles likely comes from fighting Bethesda's legal actions, whoever is in the right legally, without all the law suits, we would probably have a Fallout MMO by now.

and I would for damn sure rather have Interplay do it than have another fallout FPS. FO3 was good, and New Vegas was better, but the first 3 Fallout games (developed by Black Isle and published by Interplay) are still some of the best games ever made.

@Aberhams I would agree with you "if" Obsidian Entertainment was developing the MMO as it’s comprised of mostly former Black Isle employees who understand the franchise. However Interplay picked Masthead Studios to develop the MMO, this is the same company that developed Earthrise and it looks like they started work on Fallout Online while still developing their the aforementioned MMO.

I cannot say I trust Masthead with the Fallout IP and when I see an indie developer try to take on two AAA title MMOs I have to wonder if they are giving each MMO the attention to detail required, Earthrise seems to have been lacking in that area. Also if you are going to judge a ZeniMax Fallout MMO based off of their single player title then the same should go for Earthrise and their FPS MMO. The reality is that Bethsoft would not have developed the Fallout MMO it would have been developed by ZeniMax Online Studios and they are two different teams with two different focuses in the gaming industry.

While Interplay is going through some tough times and has made several bad decisions over the years, I do wish them the best. However I do not look forward to the Fallout MMO they are publishing and I personally believe ZeniMax would serve the franchise better than Masthead.

@Aberhams This really isn't the same Interplay we remember from the 80's and 90's. The company is pretty much run by ex Titus CEO's etc. Who made some of the worst games ever and are imo cash grabbers. Outside of the Worms game, they have little credit to there produced or published titles.

@Unshra Correction: "go for "Masthead" and their FPS MMO."

Off to get some sleep, ignoring the other typos for now... :-p

Interplay developed jackshit. The original Fallout titles and Van Buren(what was to be FO3) were developed by Black Isle Studios which Interplay shut down in 2003 and who have since then reformed under the name Obsidian Entertainment.

Interplay is doing nothing BUT cash grabs because they still hold the rights to a number of IPs. Learn the difference between publisher and developer.

Excuse me, but Interplay's 25th Anniversary games are still some of the very best Trek games available, and this is not just my opinion alone. You want to check your facts before you go shooting your mouth off.

Couldn't agree more, Kai Hohiro.

I mean, sure, I think most of us would like to see something like this come to life, eventually, but never in the hands of Interplay!

That just has "cash-grab" written all over it and Fallout deserves more. So much more.

Sell the bloody rights to Bethesda and let them do what they want with the property. You guys need money so bad then there is your cash flow. This whole squabble all these years and now your company is going to die. Such a waste.

Wait, it's in danger now, but it wasn't way back when they were making it with rights that they no longer had?

I know they *had* the rights to make it, but they didn't get far enough to keep them before their time ran out. This game's been in danger since *then*, as I understand it.

Flames incoming,

@Octahedron

And then the Caen brothers are out there in interviews trying to claim that if Bethesda wins the lawsuit then the sale of the Fallout IP is null and void because Interplay retaining the rights to the MMO was part of the deal.

Which seems semi-reasonable on the surface until you realize that the deal was Bethesda bought the Fallout IP as a whole, including MMO rights, and licensed the MMO rights back to Interplay under certain conditions that had to be met within a certain time frame, or (as per the sale and licensing agreements) the MMO rights would revert back to Bethesda. And the whole reason for the lawsuit (or at least the one that started it off before a bunch of other BS was added to it) is that Bethesda argues those conditions haven't been met. So if Bethesda wins the lawsuit, then according to the sale agreement, Interplay gets nothing.

I didn't really have anything against Interplay but trying to snatch back the rights to the Fallout license for free after another company made it popular just strikes me as greedy and low.

Fallout Online's future with Interplay isn't in jeopardy. It never had a chance at launching to begin with. A company as poor with finances at Interplay never stood a chance properly managing something as expensive to develop as an MMO.
