So all the classes are available for free if you subscribed at some point? In that case I might actually give it a whirl.

If you have subscribed at any time in the past you may use any of the characters you previously created but you are still limited to two character slots unless you purchase more or sub.

I think it works like this: Previous subscribers who choose the FtP option have only two characters they can play. The difference is they can choose any two characters from their existing account, and are not restricted to the standard FtP classes.

I read
"entitlement crowd", "newbs", "economically challenged gamers", "zomg-how-dare-they-not-give-me-the-entire-game-for free crowd" and other not so nice references to people with different opinions from the author.

What this? An article or a random troll rant on some kind of forum?

It's both, really, and if all you saw were those phrasings, you missed the point.

@Sephirah

Would you rather he just did a press release post instead?

At least it's a bit of substance rather than the nicey-nice view "oh everyone's right really" that I, personally, hate.

If you want faceless, opinionless and utterly boring writing I encourage you to go read...a book for under-5s? That's about the only thing I can think of that has no nasty people with their nasty opinions in it.

@Sephirah I don't see how "newb" or "economically challenged gamers" were "not so nice references" in the context of those comments. The use of "newb" was correct; someone new(ish) to the game.

However, I think the main point is that the author isn't insulting people just for having a different opinion. The author doesn't seem to have any issue with people who think Funcom's proposed model should be tweaked (the author actually agrees that it could use changes, although in a different way from what most other commenter are suggesting).

What the author is commenting on is how certain people are going about expressing those opinions; acting like this new F2P model is a ripoff to new players because it's not giving away enough. And I'm perfectly fine with those people being openly mocked.

@Jef Reahard No. The article lacked what I would expect from a massively article. This sounds more like a butt hurt rant than anything else. For some reason the author feels his failing game is somehow beating enough mmos in the market to deserve implementing a crappy F2P system.

Your article also lumped all the reasons someone who may be drawn to a F2P game. Monetary reasons vs the majority reason being that man felt the game does not deserve a AAA sub fee. Most people playing the F2P will simply feel it is a good way to get a feeling for the game or see the changes to help move closer to a premium sub.

@placebonation

You lost me with your points there. I don't care if people play AoC or not. I enjoy portions of it, but if it folded tomorrow, I've got three other MMOs I play regularly, and my column doesn't exist to serve Funcom.

The only "butt-hurt" in this discussion comes from the folks whining about how they don't like the model. Whether that's because they can't afford it or because they deem the game unworthy of the money is really irrelevant.

They should pipe down in either case and let the folks who are interested in AoC as a result of the announcement check it out without all the belly-aching.

@Jef Reahard

People who have something to say about the game and its "*free* to play" status you don't like should "pipe down"? Lol.

If you're going to post a fanboi rant as an article, and it IS a fanboi rant like most of your recent AoC drivel, kindly grow enough balls to at least say "shut up".

I will also be laughing my ass off as I watch AoC limp along like AO has for the last eight years of its development.

"Oh, AO has made it 10 years! AoC will do the same! How dare someone say anything different! They should just "pipe down! LOL"

Now tell the truth, fanboi.

AO has LIMPED along for ten years. It has had a skeleton crew for the last 6-7 of those years. It has taken them 5 years to get it the "new engine" Morrison first announced 5 years ago and it STILL isn't there, 3 of those years trying to get the AoC engine to work for AO which is even funnier when you realize they're BOTH versions of the SAME engine, Dreamworld.

"Friday with Means" "weekly updates" have turned into nothing but a few lines, unless of course it's about Means having to shave his wife's bunions or some other crap that has nothing to do with the damn game.

Oh, and this "new steady development" you mentioned for AoC? Where's that shit been for the last two years before they finally realized their ship was sinking fast and decided to try the old "F2P" route? The last two years when the most they could add was one fucking PvP map and they were SO proud of that? Huh?

Oooh, skull-avatar-man returns for another round of comments! Yay!

Since you're so eager to criticise: what exactly constitutes drivel? Something you don't personally agree with? Something you don't understand or know anything about but don't like anyway, so, rather than actually make a case as to why it's wrong, you just insult the content and the author?

About testicles and scrotums (scroti?): it's called being civil. You might like to try it at some point, it does wonders for your (paper-thin, pathetic) argument. I mean, he could just right a long wall-o-text with lots of shits, fucks, arses and wankers in it, but that would be a real rant. Not this mildly opinionated article that you're all crying wolf over.

Aha, I see: please provide me with these insider sub and developer assignment figures showing how AO has limped along.

Oh wait. You can't. Because you're clueless. You were clueless last time I saw you, and you're still clueless.

To use Jef's perfect prose: pipe down. Your idiocy (and its parallels in a great many other people) is why a lot of communities suck.

@Poordevil Going F2P has never screwed a game up before and I don't see any reason why this would be the exception.

@Tempes Magus It does tend to over charge, but i would say that if not great than it is really good. F2P did a world of good fro not only CO, but LotR and DDO. The only games that might not benefit from the transition are WoW (11mill is more then plenty) and probably Rift

Well, there were 1,4 millon copys sold (as stated in their press release).
You will not only target the new player, you will also get back the players who have stopped playing for some reason even its only 200k of them and 50k paying.
This free trail was catered for the total new player and they have already made statements by now that every player who was once subscribed has less restrictions which is only good!

For me i will never play AoC regular again but i like to spend a week every 2 months or so yet i am not sure how that offer fits to me.
I prefer the perfectworld style.
I never buy enhancements but i have mounts, clothes and the famours Guardian and spirit charms.
The charms refill you healthj and manapool if its down to
