On Swamp Thing:

Last year, an announcement was made that all the Vertigo characters who predated Vertigo as a brand would be returning to the DCU roster, as Animal Man and the Doom Patrol had done a few years previous. So far Death of the Endless, Swamp Thing and John Constantine have appeared in mainline DCU stuff, with Rac Shade showing up in Flashpoint's alternate timeline. So it's not so much that SOE's plans changed as it is that the definition of "Vertigo characters" changed with the elimination of that barrier.

And now, the obligatory complaints:

1) I had better get to keep Heat Sink and Snap Shot as is dammit. I don't expect Neurasthenia to be contested.
2) I hope against all logic that Update Four will be Batfamily-free. We've had three updates where the main new additions have revolved around Bat-villains and the Batcave. We need more Superman and Wonder Woman-focused content, to say nothing of the huge universe of characters not associated with any of the three. At the very least give us an alert involving the Secret Six (yeah, I know Catman and Deadshot started as Batman villains, but they really haven't been in years. And Bane is, of course, Bane. Still preferable to seeing Update Four trot out the Ventriloquist or somebody people know 'cause he was on the cartoons.)

@Zach Adams

I can see why they started with Batman.

I have no idea who is in Superman's Rogues gallery and I read comics...well not superman cause he's boring. Well, Zod but didn't he originate in that movie?

I only know Cheetah and Giganta are in Wonder Woman's. It stops there.

@Yellowdancer

Almost all the villains from Superman's rogues gallery is in the game already but only in small bites. Metallo, Brainiac, Lex Luthor, Bizarro all the famous ones are there except Darkseid 'cos he was deafeated at the time of DCUO. The only thing they can do now is introduce obscure characters that not a lot of people know about.

There has been a lot of foreshadowing though with Trigon's imminent return, Dr. Arkham going crazy, Faust and his soul wells and Black Adam lots of stuff to look forward to I think.

The way SOE is choosing to handle names with this planned server merge is, perhaps, the most colosally stupid move I have seen any team of devs make since I first started playing MMOs a decade ago.

While I understand the desire to reward those people who spend the most time playing a given character by allowing them to keep their chosen names, a vast number of players only play DCUO on the side, when they feel like a change of pace from their regular MMO. I own an LTS to DCUO and still play quite frequently. I was fortunate enough to be able to lock in some names that I had used for years in both CO and CoH. I actually prefer the playstyle in DCUO to either of those games, which is why I bought an LTS to it. But I do not play more than a couple of hours a week. It is thus almost assured that I will lose my names when this merge takes place.

If this happens, it will end any and all chances of me ever supporting SOE again. There is a way around naming conflicts that will make any rational human being happy: follow the Cryptic example and use @handles. There is absolutely no justification for not doing this. So only 5% of players have shared names across servers? Really? Maybe that's because only 5% of players are role-players who don't want to name their character "Madkowpwnzu" or "Bigredfireguy"? When it comes to unique super hero handles there are only so many names available. To limit them further by placing completely artifical and unneccessary restrictions on them is just so stupid that it is impossible to believe that anyone could seriously support it.

If I wanted to be selfish I'd say "fine, let's do this, but give LTSers priority over everyone else, regardless of time spent playing". But I'll be completely honest with you: I'd rather see a half dozen other players running around with the same name as me then a single player running around named "Megajugsofdeath"!

So, yeah, /rant off.

Glad to see that they're doing more with DCUO, it has some great promise but I have the feeling that it will eventually go to a F2P model of some sort. I still have time on my account from the Sony outage and maybe I'll hop on after I finish all my Bar Exam studying (or maybe one of these evenings). I have several problems still with DCUO including the sparse character creator and that eventually I felt like a Barbie doll collecting styles not because I wanted to, but because they would give precious skill points for actual min-maxing use.

I'd like to see styles become account-wide for the sole purpose of being available at character creation. Maybe restrict the tiers, but yeah.
