Like its iconic vehicles, World of Tanks is proving to be an unstoppable beast rolling over everything in its path. And if numbers are any indication, there's no sign of this newly released game slowing down.
Today, Wargaming.net announced that World of Tanks has crossed the line of two million registrations for its Russian server. The European and North American servers add another million to the roster as well.
The game is proving to be a smash hit in Russia, which recently awarded it Best Game of GDC Russia 2011.
CEO Victor Kislyi says that this well exceeds any predictions the company had for the game's growth: "At the very beginning of development for World of Tanks, we were assuming that the maximum number would be around 600,000 players worldwide. Now, we have two million registrations in Russia alone, not to mention the Western audience and its immense growth. With the tremendous number we've reached in Russia as well as the dynamics of community growth in Europe and North America, we are looking forward to the many more milestones to come."

Is anyone surprised a tank game is doing exceedingly well in Russia?
I might have to check it out, I goofed around a tiny bit in a very early beta, but maybe much has changed since.

The portion of the game they give away free is phenomenal if you like lobby team shooters.
I stayed in the bottom tiers on purpose just because I heard the top-tiers were a bit more unbalanced to favor paying customers.
The bottom tiers are tons of fun. Very little teamwork but if you are a smart player you can turn the map around with just a few other good thinkers on your team.
Very satisfying game and well worth throwing them a few bucks every month or so just to support them.

@Pingles The game isn't too unbalanced at higher levels. After Tier 7 though it becomes difficult to end a match netting positive credits though unless you're a paying customer. Repair and ammo reload costs will often exceed your earnings if you don't perform well. A user who pays for "premium" status earns an extra 50% credits and experience in every battle.
A common strategy is to make your credits down at around Tier 5 which is often quite profitable even without being Premium. That allows you to fund your higher tier tanks.

Can we stop hyping when a developer releases "number of registrated user" in a f2p game? That number is meaningless.
Active online users would be a much more useful number but they won't release information like that as long as the media lets them get away with "impressive" numbers that mean nothing.

No clue on what the number of active accounts is, but most nights, there's 12,500-13,500 online during prime time, assuming that the ingame population count is accurate.

EU servers have around +-35000 users online at once at the prime. I just started but its a fun game, and can be done in short sittings without trouble. Just a game you have on the side for if your bored with other games :P

What I like about this game is their banner adverts, the one with the tank blowing up the Orc/s. Makes me laugh every time I see it. Good to see WoT go so well

This game has been eating a lot of my time for months. I really enjoyed it in Beta and am continuing to enjoy it at launch.

There certainly is not millions of active players but there is certainly already more people playing world of tanks than say eve online and that is quite impressive in this short amount of time.
The game is very quick to get into and addictive as hell..
