Thanks Jef, good stuff as always.

If Funcom can just overhaul the crafting and add more to do outside of combat it will be a really decent game, even more so if they can add an additional starting area so players don't have to repeat Tortage with every single character.

Even that won't be enough for the usual "Failcom" suspects of course, but then they probably have their hands too full slagging off Sony at the moment to be bothered with Funcom.

@Seffrid And that is why Funcom needs to start banning these blokes..the worst thing that will happens is they by another copy of the game and think twice about acting like Assblooms on the forums and in the chats.

@Dunraven

Banning people who criticize them will do wonders for their image.

@smg77 Actually banning idiots who subscribe just to act like asses in the game would do wonders.

It is a shame they felt the need to put in the Khitai grind in the first place. It drove me and many of my friends away from the game.

Up until that point AoC was always very casual friendly, even the raiding wasn't a painful grind, but Khitai, no matter how beautiful and interesting, was just a horrible grind that immediately shifted the game from casual friendly to hardcore only. :(

So AoC is now almost the same age that LotRO was when it went F2P. Hmmmm...

@wondersmith

We can hope, although their recent anniversary sweepstakes kind of suggests otherwise, considering the prize is two months of game-time, or the game itself if you don't already own it.

If they follow Turbine's model, those prizes would still be of value after the F2P transition. Old LotRO game-time cards can still be redeemed for the identical duration of VIP time, and old retail product keys can still be entered for very generous benefits (especially the Moria expansion).

At this point in time, I sincerely doubt they will go F2P, given the general vibe I keep seeing/reading on the studio. Albeit, I will admit, I casually read about it.

I could add, "Maybe in 2 years", but even their history doesn't suggest they'll consider such a more; anything is possible, but Funcom seems very reticent about going F2P.

I hope the game never goes free to play unless the move is 100% guaranteed to improve the game overall. It could just as easily be a major miss step that would hose the game, big time. Maybe not, but you can't overlook that possibility.

I'm for the business model that keeps the devs paid and the content flowing, without screwing up the gameplay or dropping development quality down the chute.

'Tis a strange article, Jef!

It starts off full of hope, but the majority of the middle admits to the flaws, then, it winds up on a hopeful note (as it should in any such article).

I'll have to try out the game soon, end of month is coming around. We'll see.

Ha, I thought the same after I proofread it the first time. Tbh though, that's just the way I feel about AoC.

I'm a fan of the game in some respects, but it frustrates the hell out of me in others. Ultimately, I think it could be a fantastic game but it's got many miles to go.

So let's take a real look at what's happened this past year;
PVE EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

What improvement in public perception?

The game has gone to near death to a ghost land in this time period. There is no proper guild v guild content to keep pvp guilds interested; seiges still don't work (broken for 3 years, GG Funcom) and there is still no sign of the premade mini game queue arriving. Bori is still a piece of cr@p. It's no suprise there's barely any one on what used to be AoC's most popular server, Fury EU pvp.

Forgettable new crappy dungeons, horse racing and treasure hunting (I mean wtf?!) will last a few runs maybe, but working competetive pvp content could keep people interested for years. Of course that will never happen, as those like me that played for several years know not to trust in Funcom and the biggest bullsh!tter on the interwebz; Craig Morrison. Who remembers his 'we're fixing seiges', 'premade queue will come soon after the pug queue' and 'shrines content is working and working well and serving it's intended purpose'? I do, but I guess massively is so far up Sillirion's butt hole they don't want a balanced article.

@MustardCutter yah i agree with you. Funcom is a misleading company, and AoC is nothing but a pve grind fest , it always had the potiential to be a great game but they totally killed pvp. Maybe sometime in the future they will get it together but it will be too late then.

Even if they go F2P they will have a hard time getting this game back up.

Love the game and have fun playing it. Since they went over the grind now even Khitai is fun. And i RP, PvE and PvP (poorly admittedly in all those playstyles.) But my days in AoC are diverse and challenging and for the most part, FUN! If it wasn't i'd be somewhere else.

The hardcore PvP crowd in any game is by and large ignorable asshats that fail to see anything from any other point of view than their own. They should go play Counterstrike.

They maintain that Funcom sux because the game was broken on release three years ago and the old dev who were responsible for the broken game is oddly not blamed for it but instead the new dev is being slaughtered for creating a game that has a potential for more people to play.

And as the only games that have longevity are PvE focused.. the math is easy.

The tech is there now for a lot of the changes and upgrades that needs to happen. So for me the future is bright.

The asshats on the other hand will continue to bemoan a game that NEVER existed in AoC, or indeed, anywhere else.

@Cylien

The game was bug ridden at the start, but it was sold as a pvp game and the old seige video is still on the official website, the fact seiges crash and look nothing like actual in game seige mechanics is fraudulent advertising. The 'new devs' as you put it have promised many things over the years and didn't deliver, remember border kingdom tower content coming in 1.06 patch claims? Remember the 'we are fixing sieges' claims? Remember the 'after the expansion we will focus on pvp' claims? I call that lies/fraudulent advertising designed to keep disgruntled pvpers hanging on, waiting for promised changes that never came. The fact is throughout most of AoC's life the most populated servers were the pvp ones, it's only the past year that they dropped below pve as even the most die-hard pvp-ers who want to see AoC's style and combat system put to use in a compelling competetive mechanic have finally all given up. All Mr Morrison has done is appease the pure pve crowd and look where that's getting FC - dead servers, despite the pve being hailed as great. Seems great pve doesn't keep players like you are claiming. What you also fail to realise is that most of the pvp guys clear pve content in thier sleep whether it be for advantage in pvp or even fun. It's funny you mention counterstrike, imagine if AoC had some built in competetive pvp element like the community has built up around competetive counter strike, imagine all the sub money you'd get from the 'ignorable' pvp crowd.

To sum up: numbers were healthy when there were promises of pvp focus and content, subs are terribly low when the only promise is more and more pve content. The math is simple...

Geeze all this PvP whining! It's never ending. I wonder if it is as tiresome to write is it is to read! In addition they all seem to totally ignore the new PvP server on the way. It's going to be a radical PvP server, just the place where PvPers can go at each other day and night. Also, I am sure if the launch version rule set doesn't quell at least some of this chronic PvP bile Craig would be willing to improve it or modify it. Cheer up guys, there is a whole server on the way just for you!

@Poordevil

The new server is a pr exercise designed to suck in people like yourself to think they are actually bothering to address pvp as a viable play style. There is no new pvp content, it's the same game with some guards removed. There hasn't been any open world pvp for ages for guards to matter. The new server is just a fresh start 'throw away your high pvp lvl characters and grind the same content you grinded before' server. Nothing but bile passes through Craig Morrison's lips/keyboard. Only pve only freaks and Morrison fanboi's actually believe the crap he spews.

P.S. Would you join a brand new pve server where you got to gear up a whole new char but the trash mobs have been removed from some dungeons? Cause that's all B&G server is if you put it in a PVE context.

How are you so sure what the new PvP server is going to be? Have you played on it at all, or tested it? Is there some kind of public beta for the new PvP server?
