Hm...

Not impressed by the graphics, but I'm interested in seeing how auto-aiming turrets will balance out in PVP.

@(Unverified) Last I checked we were all still entitled to our opinions. Don't embarrass yourself trying to pass off your own opinions as fact. Remember: beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

@(Unverified) There is no accounting for taste. I'm not at all embarrassed to say that I prefer a different art style. I don't mean this as an insult to pixel-counters our those who enjoy the gritty atmosphere, but in my eye the palette is dreary, the animations border on uncanny valley, and although the textures might be crisp and you may have more pixels, this one-off video was a tad underwhelming.

Besides, you missed my question, which is how will an auto-aiming turret factor into PVP combat? I've seen the issues robotics turrets had in Global Agenda. How will that factor in GW2?

@Borick I agree that it is up to a person's personal taste if they like the look of a game or not. It is also possible that a particular style grows on a person over time. Art is considered one of the strongest points of Guild Wars though.

@(Unverified) Thanks! I can appreciate that concept art, and my criticism of the 'graphics' lies more in the animation and stylistic approach than the artwork. Some of the animation transitions showed misalignment, and I have a problem with any of the worlds with a sharper, 'realistic' style -- that old uncanny valley.

I could just as easily focus on the awesome animation of the four-legged critters and the pack of ratlike humanoids. The artwork is top notch. It's just something about the animation of the larger humanoids that bothered me, and I have a personal preference for cartoon and cel-shaded graphics.

Of course I intend to play the game, and I'll probably love it. For once, my criticism wasn't an intentional troll. I'd rather see opinions on the turrets. If GW2 has no click-targetting (Which I find awesome) then will turrets serve as a skill crutch in PVP, as they did when I was active in Global Agenda? Folks who are skilled at aiming tend to become disgruntled when they get chewed up by bots in PVP.

@Borick

.... I suspect auto aiming turrets are going to be little different than petclass pets. Save the whole being stuck in one place aspect.

They might get a little more DPS because they are stuck in one spot depending on their range of attack. And I'm sure they will get nerfed to hell, soon after the game launches .... because of endless QQ threads about how taking a checkpoint guarded by turrets is "hard" ......

@(Unverified) Graphics have less subjectivity than you would like to believe. The graphics for this game are great, just look at other MMOs. If you can't see there is a significant technical improvement over other competitors you are blind.

The art style is very subjective though and you may not like that.

Actually reading a bit more based on the redeployed and not re-summoned part .... I'm sorta hoping that this doesn't turn into a MAU thing. I guess it could just mean that they have a longer summon/build time but can be moved quickly after their initial placement.

In any case as long as they don't design them or nerf them to the point where they get steamrolled by cookiecutters, they should be interesting.

@(Unverified) Graphic quality and art style are not unrelated, nor is graphic quality based solely on static visuals and pixel count. We're dealing with subjective opinion among armchair amateurs here, but the more realistic the graphics appear, the more small issues in the animation can ruin the effect. Rift, for example, may have 'better' graphics than WoW, but I appreciate it less because the 'better' graphics aren't served by better animation.

Wow may not have the most modern graphics, but the animations are almost seamless with the action of the game, and I'm less inclined to note the movement of the avatars as being awkward or stilted.

Civilization 2 was the best of the series, in my opinion. The graphics of the sequels, while 'better' did not impress me. Note that I never used the word bad or poor. I said that I wasn't impressed.

@Borick I apologize, and I don't care about your last question. I'm going to address your statement "The palette is dreary". It's obvious tons of people disagree with you about Guild Wars art style. I love cel-shaded styles myself and animation is much easier to do for Cartoonish games. I'd like you to explain exactly how the palette is dreary though. Have you not seen the other areas of the game or is your mind only focusing on the areas in despair that require neutral colors to invoke that feeling? Do you just simply prefer more simple colors thrown about? It's hard to not pass you off as just someone trying to be different from a popular opinion because you want to look cool. I'm not saying you are doing that, You just aren't defending your position well and instead trying to focus on your question you asked instead.

@Scuffles In Global Agenda, turrets were either overpowered aimbots or not worth the time and effort of placement, and the robotics agents who became a token spot on organized teams, used for hoofing the respawn beacon.

GA is not GW, I understand. Different level of development entirely, but I still wonder how they'll deal with the issue.

@Tizmah I was commenting on that video only. I don't have an ego to feed, wouldn't know 'cool' if it bit me, and I'm not bothered by people disagreeing with me, even vehemently. I'm not arguing from authority or with authority.

The palette looks dreary to me because the coloring and shading looks more gritty and realistic than stylized. Perhaps I'm just childlike -- bright colors and bold outlines draw my attention. I had the same problem appreciating Morrowind or Warhammer.

Animation isn't easier to do when the design is less realistic. It offers the same challenge, but it's usually more noticeable in realistic styles when something is off.

@Borick If you want to say you don't like the games graphics, use the term "art style" instead of graphics.

If you use graphics, specifically for this game, you will just be pointed out that you're wrong, and technically speaking this game is pretty advanced, or other forms of bitter responses.

Saying you don't like the art style can't be proven wrong because that is more clear and can easily be determined as an opinion on a feature.

@(Unverified) you must be a console gamer if you think these graphics are high quality...this is what games in 2006/7 looked like on PC, and as a PC game...its a big let down , even for a MMO. Not that i care how the graphics look, the gameplay doesnt seem very exciting yet...guns kinda killed it for me anyway tho

Your well thought out rebuttle reminded me of this:

This is a profile of just one of the artists contributing to GW2. The actual fruition of the end result looks a 1000 times better:

Note the Lion's Arch video at the end. I am not sure what Borick is going on about. /shrug
